Studying With Sargent, Part 2, Refined Edition

Comments

The short answer- not exactly. Sargent was know to block in, in a single session the way that I paint in this lesson. So- planes expressed in a mosaic of color-values. Failing a satisfactory result he would scrape down the canvas and try the same thing he following session. I am sure that the exact method would vary but that is more or less what he is understood to have done. For these lessons I decided to break it up into stages to make it more digestible for students of all levels.

Hi, Is this the actual method used by Sargent? I mean, did he apply this first layer and then come back with the broad brushwork?

You are literally one of the best art instructors I’ve ever come across. I have watched hundreds of hours on YouTube and have subscribed to numerous instructors on Patreon. You are one of the very few who actually explains what brushes you’re using and why you’re using them. My paintings have gotten so much better from that alone. Thank you!

What was the name of the company that made the panel? Wondering where I can get the panel? Did you say it was from a company called Slatkin?

CROW MARTHA

Thank you Stephen!

Indian red could do- Terra Rosa would be better.

Could I ask you if I don’t have vermilion extra what other red would be a good soliton to use here? Other than alizarin crimson … maybe Indian red?

It would be really helpful to have the demos closer to each other...

I love having the refined version available at the same time Stephen. I watch these first without working along, so I know where you’re going, then I go back into the full cut in the studio when I feel ready.

so enjoyable. Worth the wait. Heading off to do 'dead' layer now. Thank you Stephen.
