All my friends watched and loved the anime when it was airing, so I knew a lot of the plot by proxy, and I even cosplayed as L during the peak of its popularity. But I just never got around to watching it until now. And I've gotta say -- I cannot even begin to understand HOW it is tauted as the gold standard for so many people. The characters are flat caricatures and unrelatable. Light's "brilliant" solves and "achievements" felt unrealistic and unearned, with "problems" blatantly set up for him to solve it. Misa is annoying as hell and especially disappointing given her potential. L was starting to grow on me until *mumbled spoilers* that one point in the plot. The L wannabes were dull and uninteresting. The overall concept is interesting, sure, but the plot really tried to forcefeed-bulldoze into your brain how amazing the story and characters without proving it.
