AI, love it or hate it, it's here
Added 2023-05-22 05:55:10 +0000 UTCWe are taking a moment to talk about something that's all over the news and forums. It's the use of AI. New technologies like ChatGPT are bringing new tools to the mainstream. It's being used in art, writing, the workplace, pretty much everywhere! We think it's a powerful tool that can be used alongside human ingenuity to create some badass things.
But AI isn't new, especially not in gaming. In fact, if you have a moment, check out this article with some history, uses and examples. In many ways, gaming and AI have had a symbiotic relationship that's allowed each to grow and expand.
That being said - all of the art, characters, story, and feel created in the DE3D studio is made without the use of AI, and we intend to keep it that way. The creation process is too important to our work. Setting the scene, the lighting, the angles, the positions, the characters, and the stories behind them is the most important part of what we do.
Using the tool of digital creation has made this process so much faster and attainable. Doing art by hand is amazing and beautiful, and the artists that inspire us also started that way (to see the list, check out our About page). As it is, each one of our images can take hours to days to create using digital art tools. Doing it all by hand seems near impossible at this point. It's why Pendavos really found his place as a digital artist because it allowed his creativity to flow faster and in a more accessible way.
Back to AI - it's a tool, and like any other tool, it can do really helpful things, and it can be used in a healthy or unhealthy way. When we started transitioning from still rendered art into creating video games, this became really clear. While working on Nymph-O and Full Moon, we've been able to consider the opportunities that AI presents to make game play more engaging and fun. It allows us to put more time and focus into the DE3D stories and base characters and let AI handle NPCs, actions, or parts of the environment. We already use AI to calculate the realtime interface between you as the player and the world that's been designed. Things like random character decision-making depending upon parameters within a scene. Or life-like activities happening while you're on a mission in the game. These are all events inside of a game that can be turned on or turned off. AI can be unhealthy when it starts to creep into everyday real life... but that's a topic for a different post.
