Hey Critical Crew!
We trust that you're all enjoying this month's latest Lovecraftian/horror -themed release. We're hard at work getting April's upcoming "Into the Expanse" content ready for you all, where we revisit The Hollow Expanse (our setting's version of Spelljammer). And no better way to celebrate WIPWednesday than by getting a first-look into what's to come. Check out the Expanse Kraken!
Expanse krakens are horrifying monsters of the infinite abyss floating through the cosmos. These horrors are adept at camouflage, able to pull flying vessels into an artificial orbit, infect the minds of captains, and more. They truly are one of the greatest horrors of The Expanse, capable of terrible destruction and operating as hidden predators of the vast emptiness between worlds.
Expanse krakens sport a plethora of feeding appendages. Their reaching tentacles often extend out from hiding places within asteroids to snatch ships or other prey from The Hollow Expanse. They will often infect the mind of pilots, causing them to steer their vessels toward it. Once within range, these krakens often release a psychic burst that slays creatures within the vessel, ramming holes into the ship and pulling the dead from the wreckage to feed.
One of the coolest things about this creature is that it was invented by my 5 year old son Theo after one of our seemingly endless deep dives into the Critical Crafting lore. After learning about The Hollow Expanse and the Sky Reaper Sharks and Driftsong Whales, he grabbed one of his notepads and started drawing and inventing the lore for what became the Expanse Kraken! Talk about a proud parent moment! π₯²
