These massive predators subsist mainly on fish and other aquatic creatures, either standing on the shore and snapping them up in their crocodilian jaws, or splashing through the water, propelling themselves with paddle-like tails. Spinosaurs sport a large sail on their backs. This sail is used for thermoregulation and also serves as a display to attract mates or ward off competitors. While swimming through the water, the sail will commonly extend above the surface like a massive shark’s fin. Spinosaurs are hunted extensively by sailors, the sailors’ superstition being that mounting the sail of a spinosaurus on a ship brings good luck. Some cerati and parasuri have even fashioned ships to use the sails of the spinosaurs as functioning parts of their vessels.
