Prior to having a refrigerator, you couldnβt make your own Jello, so it was seen as a fancy modern dessert that was difficult to get. Once fridges became common, it took a while for the allure of gelatin to wear off. Meaning lots of crazy recipes were invented just because people were stoked about gelatin

Hawaii had Pearl Harbour and other Bases, Japan was occupied post WW2 and still has US bases, and Korea was introduced during the Korean War and also still has US bases. Spam and similar canned meats were a part of US military and humanitarian rations. History is fun
