Patron tiers discussion

Hi!

I've been peeking in at a few of the other authors patreon accounts (lol something I should have done before I started mine), and noticed that they are working with multiple tier levels.  As other patrons here pointed out, Wizard's Tower is a lot further ahead on its lowest tier than most.

So, I wanted to touch base with you all to gather your thoughts about it.  Obviously, if there are any changes to tiers, it won't be until next month so that you get the best bang for your buck.

What tiers have worked best for you in the past?

I think that 3$ for all chapters is way too low. And don't get me wrong, I jumped in because it's JUST 3$ and i will probably drop out if you raise it, but that's no reason to undervalue your work. Hell, i wouldn't be mad even if you made it with smth like 1$=1 chapter, 5$=5 chapters and 10$ all of them. I also don't think that you would lose money with that change because most people interested in your work would just change their tiers. In short i think you sell your work too cheaply even if it means that I will lose on it. Keep your work up and if you feel like it, raise your prices. have a nice day

I think it's nice if you can catch up to the highest patreon tier in one at maximum two monts. From a business perspective 1 3 5 10 (defiance of the fall, Primal Hunter) seems useful. I personally prefer 5 dollar max (Azarynth Healer, Dragonmoon Eyes) and 10 dollar with e.g. some special chapters. I sign up once for evry patreon but anything below 3 dollar is something I might keep even when I am not super hyped/less than 5 chapters a week. Super important to add the actual number of additional chapters to the patreon tier description. Right now the description is 3+ I think while its 10+.

I'm definitely $5 dollar tier gang for the bulk of my subscriptions, I'll occasionally go 10 or 15 but it depends on the story. Regardless you're definitely costing yourself money by not going with 1 - 3 tiers at least, with how many chapters you put out I doubt hardly anyone would even blink at $5-7~ being the lowest even if it wasn't complete access.

Hey dude! Love your work. I don’t think I’d pay more than I am, but I wouldn’t be upset if that meant fewer advance chapters. Make your money, you’re writing is awesome I’d love to see you get far enough to have it edited and published. Good luck!

Dee

I've never personally paid more than $10 a month for a fiction. At what you have, and can clearly do; I would recommend 2 chapters a dollar. 6 chapters for $3, 12 for $6, 20 for $10. Use your $15 tier for interlude polls, art and behind the scenes posts(character sheets, outlines, deleted scenes.)

For me it comes down to post frequency, being farther ahead is /nice/ but I'm not going to pay ten bucks a month to read ten chapters ahead for someone who only posts once every month or two (looking at you, kosnik4, a_man_in_black). The gold standard for me is Shirtaloon, who I'm subbed to at ten bucks a month and he posts medium-short chapters 5 days a week. Necariin is another good example, also $10, only 3 or 4 posts for him but they tend to be longer. On the flip side SenescentSoul and Arcs only post once a week, but they're at $2.50 and $2 respectively per month and the chapters they do post tend to be quite long.

Wasn't aware of that but I'm looking into it now! Thanks!

He can dodge that by doing thing gradually (the accumulation) (and its quite easy for him to do this because his release rate is quite good ) So he really can choose wathever number he want in the end, its just gonna take some time untill he get the number he want without changing his rythm of writting he have now I would like to see 10 for 3 buck 25-30 for 5 and 50 for 10? If he do this all the people interested in the story gonna come on the patreon because they get a attractive number of chapter vs buck (that change nothing for him just get a little time to get to it) that really more attractive that some patreon who are limit rip off for people who have not a lot of money to throw

Another option I have seen is to convert the current tier into a limited "early bird" tier and then make tiers for new Patrons.

I have around 5 patreons I pay monthly, most of them for 5$, but one other is also 3$. I‘m not a big fan of a lot of different tiers, just make maybe 1 very low, for people that just want to support, with a very minor benefit, a normal tier (3 or 5$) and an advanced tier around 15$ for people with too much money, that really love your story, with some special extra benefits.

Noah

I agree. 10 dollars is a lot, some authors manage it, but it’s a bit much so you could struggle.

Haran

Keep it lower than 10 bucks, it's really easy to get patrons at 3 dollars because I find it to be little to no cost. So in the end you may make more because more people will subscribe, but I could also just see there being a 5 dollar patron/ another that is 10 just for some people who can donate that much. Some may have high cost, but only 7 patrons, while those with lower cost could have more patrons and be making more. A good example is dungeon crawler Carl and Inexorable Chaos. Both are either 3 or 5 dollars for all chapters. Still making more than someone like long cultivator who asks for 13 dollars

Kingtie

Obviously a higher amount would be nicer, this are the bottomline ones I believe. But I dont know how many chapters you can pull ahead and this quantities are in line with other patreons...

Pedro Sernagiotto

Well, you need enough advanced chapters that the patrons get enough of an advantage from reading ahead. But not so far ahead that a reader that drops being a patreon for a month will forget about your story because royal road is way too far behind. 10-20 chapters or so for the top tier I’d say, depending on how often you post. There are plenty of other authors that are quite active on discord, reddit etc. Jiwa, Selkie, Mantis etc. I’d ask them if I were you

Haran

20-30 chapter in advance for tier 5 dollar for me (aniway its just waiting you have enough accumulation on them, that doesnt change the speed of your release so you can add what you want in number but the more you add well the more its a attractive patreon and tier and its quite good range 5 dollar for 20-30 chapter i think (50 for 10 dollar?) quite a lot gonna pay for it if they see this type of number (and like i said its just a matter of time you have them and that change nothing for you and your speed of release)

Zarik0

In my opinion if you want to create higher tiers you should get more than 3 chapters on the $3 one, 5 would already be nice enough. Then 10 on a $5 one, and if you think you can maintain more than that a $10 one too with all your available ones...

Pedro Sernagiotto

$5 is the max I can pay to any one author. I generally have a $20/month budget for patreon.

Stephen

What if current content stayed same, but releases slowed down until the $3 tier comes closer to what was promised? Or maybe a slight improvement to what is promised for $3?

JP Koenig

Usually lower tiers (1-5$) are around a week forward compared to public, and higher are 2-3 weeks up or have some other content (e.g. voting for image commissions). I usually try to avoid the higher tiers unless a really big cliff happens since I can't justify paying these amounts monthly for multiple creators.

Faiir

I'd be willing to pay $5 for what's currently offered. And if you started with a few extra chapters ahead I'd even pay $8-$10

Beeees!

If you do tiers that remove chapters (since the basic 3 buck tier has all chapters already) I won't support again. Make something new to make tiers worthwhile don't remove from what we already have.
