StraightioLab Movie Club: The Wizard of Oz
Added 2024-12-10 16:08:48 +0000 UTCToto, I have a feeling we're not debating New York vs. LA anymore... today we finally cash in on Wicked Fever by going back to where it all began. Topics include: The three types of gay guys, Liza Minnelli on Arrested Development, on-set injustices, and the magic of a relaxing spa day at Emerald City! See you at new student orientation at Shiz University!
(NOTE: WE ARE SORRY THIS EPISODE IS LATE! THERE WILL BE 3 EPS TOTAL IN DECEMBER! LOVE YA!)

2024-12-25 06:50:34 +0000 UTCOk so I'm seeing wicked on Monday and just watched wizard of Oz a few days ago so I'm gagging at this episode -- I've never seen wicked but I read the synopses of part 1 and 2 and these hot takes are precisely my thoughts!! And the pleasantville reference??!! Was this episode recorded in my brain this week? I grew up on wizard of Oz so revisiting it this past week and preparing to see wicked this week.....no notes. 👏👏👏 Oh also this is my first patreon ep, couldn't ask for a better introduction.

2024-12-22 02:37:27 +0000 UTCmy edible kicked in about 2/3 of the way through and by the time you got to “there’s no place like home and home can be anything” and the relative lengths of the cultural histories of greece and america and the history of gayness as a concept i was like damn there IS no place like home

2024-12-17 14:16:32 +0000 UTCHighly recommend watching The Wiz now that you've done these forays into Oz. The screenplay was written by Joel Schumacher so it has a super gay sensibility. The cast is stacked. Diana Ross and Michael Jackson are incredible. Richard Pryor plays the wizard. Quincy Jones did the music and Luther Vandross wrote one of the big songs. There's a scary scene that was filmed in the Hoyt-Schermerhorn station, which I always think of whenever I'm there (incidentally also the site of Michael Jackson's "Bad" video). It's even more over-the-top than either the Wizard of Oz or Wicked and it fully leans into the absurdity. It was a total critical flop but it's truly one of my all-time favorite films--and soundtracks--and I think it should be more of a cult classic!

2024-12-11 01:22:21 +0000 UTCWicked is based on the timeline of the book bc in the book Oz is a real magical place not a figment of Dorothy’s imagination. The dream ending in the movie was a suggestion from one of the many screenwriters lmao to make it more realistic to audiences bc they were worried that people would find it too ridiculous if Oz was a real place. It’s an interesting change bc I think it makes the message of movie more conservative. The book also has the messaging of no place like home, but ultimately Dorothy returns to Oz many times in the series, whereas in the movie she can never return to this idyllic place bc it’s not a real place it’s just in her mind. But that’s Hollywood for you!
