Soul Pride Mega Break Instrument Video Breakdown 🥁

I mentioned it in the last chapter of this video but I'm cooking a massive 'Break Layering 101' project towards the end of this month. Then I think after that, it's time to move onto some new topics!

I really want to get going with the Arrangement Strategies videos, so that will be the focus next month alongside an upcoming feedback stream. Alex (Human Synthetics) & I are about to announce it next week.

If your an Ableton user and haven't seen his newest project, check out his Ultimate Breakbeat Template. It's super dope and looks like were tackling the same topic from two different angles! 🥁

Big ups everyone & have a great weekend. 🥷

Soul Pride Mega Break Instrument Video Breakdown 🥁

Hey chipbreak. This is the first video I did on the mega break instruments which shows some programming in Renoise - https://youtu.be/EogGasrubpI?t=543 As the break is cut into long slices, It's actually much easier to program as you can let the hits roll on into each other. Those are the first 20 or so slices of the break, all the extra ones are amazing for FX and doing cool techniques but that majority of the time your just using the main break slices. The breaks have also been processed before they go into the instrument so should be good to just lay down in your track as is. Just match the levels. With DAW like Ableton, you could even make a whole bunch of different clips (1 or 2 bars). Then record live and swap between all the clips to make a edit I've also got a Digitakt mk2 video planned to film this week which I will use the mega breaks :)

Hey George! Thanks a lot for the awesome work! 🙌 Sorry if this is maybe a noob question :) Could you suggest the best workflow or scenario for working with these break instruments in Ableton? Usually, I slice the break to MIDI and rearrange the MIDI patterns — or sometimes just work directly with the audio. Since these Mega Break Instruments have so many slices and cuts in the Sampler or Drum Rack, what’s the best way to use them efficiently and speed up the process? Do you usually set up every MIDI note manually to recreate (for example) the Amen break, and then start rearranging, swapping, and layering with processed kicks, shuffles, and snares? It would be awesome if you could explain a bit more about how to create drum breaks with these instruments — or even record a short video if that’s possible. I totally understand if you don’t use Ableton much; examples in Logic or Renoise would work great too. P.S. If you already have a tutorial or post about this, please share the link — I looked here and on your YouTube channel but couldn’t find it. Thanks again!

I think its a mix of this technique - https://youtu.be/OZRCSLExA5Q?t=1075 using a really short delay to create the robotic, comb filtering FX. Then using a bit of 1/8D delay also and possible some filtering or sample rate reduction. Just recording live and mapping the FX to a midi controller :)

This is killer, thank you. Any insight on the processing of "FX Chop 7 Dope (E-8)" in particular? Would like to achieve similar on other breaks.

Really happy to hear that mate! Was definitly the toughest break to take on so far. It actually amazing for me to make these instruments as I have to really dial in the technique for each break.

You’ve been smashing it with these. My favourite so far.
