My Experience with Tinnitus & Hyperacusis as a Music Producer

I thought I would link this up here as it's a bit more of a casual/private space if anyone has any questions or their own experiences to add.

Even reading through the YouTube comments that have already come in, you can see the impact tinnitus & hyperacusis has on so many people lives. It's certainly a tough thing to deal with mentally and for sure the biggest lesson from all of this is to protect your ears whilst their still healthy!

Get some decent ear protection for clubbing and there's a high chance it will change your life without you even knowing it.

My Experience with Tinnitus & Hyperacusis as a Music Producer

That's really tough man, especially as you had no control over how it started. Yea for sure, controlling stress though mindfulness, exercise & healthy living is the best thing you can do. It's not easy and can be extremely challenging at times, especially when going through a setback. Stay strong out there, listen to your body and things will improve gradually over time. ✌️&❤️

The tinnitus started 10 years ago. While traveling by plane, with a stuffy nose, I felt intense pressure on my eardrums upon landing, accompanied by severe pain. My eardrums were really damaged, causing hearing loss in the high frequencies and tinnitus. A few years later, medication made it worse. It's hard to bear when you're a music fanatic. But you get used to it. Practicing meditation, managing stress, and using EQ on the master volume to correct the hearing loss helps to cope. There's still a bit of frustration, though. Thank you for sharing your experience; I feel less alone.

Yea for sure man, It's awful in the beginning and your brain instantly goes to the worst case scenario of losing your hearing & being stuck with this thing for life. Sadly lots of us have had similar experiences with doctors not being able to do much. It's also crazy expensive to see an audiologist so it's just not feesable for most people. Haha sorry for bringing your tinnitus back up :} Praying for a cure for sure - maybe Ai will come up with something you never know! 🙏

Yea this was a great read & by the sounds of it your ears have held up pretty well to all the clubbing and Djing! Hopefully the hearing test goes better than expected for you. I had one night at Valve Soundsystem that for sure did some damage. It's either the super loud or tinny ones that get you! Sleeping well is such a huge factor also. If it dosen't bother you too bad & the music production dosen't add to it too much then you've got things under control. Big ups mate :)

My tinnitus appeared a few years ago, probably as a C19 after effect. Although I don’t suffer as much as you do, it was pretty scary at the beginning, cuz I was constantly thinking it was going to get worse. Of course doctors didn’t really help (frustrating) but I did get used to it to some extent, especially because it mostly bothers me just when it’s quiet around me. I did start paying attention to it now that I’ve watched the video haha. Anyway, thanks for opening the topic and for the recommendations! Hope we can all manage it ok in the future and scientists can come with a revolutionary cure

It's a coincidence you've mentioned this! I recently had an ear test in work (I work in a noisy environment, always have). They recommended I see my GP about my hearing as they predicted I've loss about 25% of my tops! I've got tinnitus especially in my right ear which was my "dj" ear with my headphones. I'm 50 now and started clubbing/raving when I was 16, all through the rest of my teens, 20's and most of my 30's I was out most weekends at raves/clubs etc. I encountered a few terrible sound systems in that time and my hearing has definitely paid the price! My ears have taken a pounding fair play! I've had to stop djing, even djing in my bedroom! I avoid going to nightclubs if possible. I went to The Warehouse Project in Manchester a couple of years ago, I had to leave early as my ears couldn't take it! As for dealing with it, I just get on with it, I've got used to it, it's become the norm now but I can imagine it can be a deal with other people. Most importantly I sleep well ha! Your probably thinking why on earth am I into music production ha? As long as I can control the volume and rest my ears I personally find it ok. I only use headphones, only use monitors when mastering. Hope this helps! Nathan 👍
