For the vast majority of history men had to be strong and stoic, their status and survival depended on projecting an aura of strength. I don't know any straight guys who tell other guys that they love them, unless they're blind drunk at 4am after a night out. Also 'That's totally gay' is not necessarily referencing homosexuality, 'gay' has taken on a new meaning, just as it took on a new meaning when homosexuality adopted it from 'happy and carefree'.
