In early 20th-century Montana, Col. William Ludlow (Anthony Hopkins) lives in the wilderness with his sons, Tristan (Brad Pitt), Alfred (Aidan Quinn) and Samuel (Henry Thomas). Eventually, the unconventional but close-knit family encounters tragedy when Samuel is killed in World War I. Tristan and Alfred survive their tours of duty, but, soon after they return home, both men fall for Samuel's gorgeous fiancée, Susannah (Julia Ormond), and their intense rivalry begins to destroy the family.

Anthony Hopkins is so legendary. Meet Joe Black is another movie with him and Brad Pitt that is criminally underrated.

You make a great point about women needing to be taken care of back then. It was indeed very normal for a male family member to marry the widow of their deceased family member. The mom moved to NY. When Samuel went to visit her he met Susannah. Great movie and gets me every time.

OH!!!! You did say you weren't sure you'd seen the other actors before. Sir Anthony Hopkins you DEF know. Silence Of The Lambs, Dr. Lector. Henry Thomas who played Samuel. ET!!! Elliott. The boy who found ET. In more recent years he did The Haunting of Hill House.

I can say, this was nominated for 3 Oscars, winning one for Best Cinematography. A VERY well earned win. I always felt that Susannah was irrevocably broken. It wouldn't have mattered where or who she ended up with. You said something akin to that at one point India. About her being toxic to the brothers. I think that was proven after she killed herself. Only then were Alfred and Tristan able to put aside the past. Overall, this was about trauma, healed and unhealed, and the damage it causes in so many different ways. Even the mother leaving the boys. Alfred became Mr. Perfect, Tristan, The Sleeping Bear and poor Samuel, Peter Pan Syndrome. I adored how they weaved Native American folklore into this magnificent tapestry. It gave me everything. Towards the end, the 20's and every bit of that decade I loved fashion wise. Prohibition and what bootleggers went through to make a living. It was well written, well acted, well filmed...etc. Yeah, it gets me. Every. Damn. Time. Same 3 parts. Always. Samuel's death. Isabel Two's death. Susannah's death. 3 needless deaths. I know you said Susannah should have left to make a new life. Back then, single women didn't do that. It was actually quite normal for a brother or family member to step in and marry to keep them housed. What their mother did was really abnormal, they never said where she went but I can only assume she still had family living as that was the only appropriate way that wouldn't have led to a scandal. Col. Ludlow remained married to her which also would have helped avert scandal. Susannah had nothing to fall back on BUT Alfred. That's where Alfred, Mr. Perfect, thought he was doing the "PC" thing but it was for selfish reasons, nothing to do with Susannah's well being.

I can't disagree with anything Andrew says here. We both love this movie so I had a feeling we'd see it similarly.

Great reaction. Suzanna was a damaged person before she met any of them. The type that just has to cling to someone. This is what she did with Samuel. She cared for him but I don't think she ever really loved him. She loved Tristan from the moment she set eyes on him. He loved her too but he was just too damaged to be with her and that's why he had to go away for years. Alfred loved Suzanna from the moment he saw her and like you said after Tristan left she just kinda settled for him as she struggles being on her own. Alfred is just salty bc he feels like he tries so hard to be a good person but everyone loves Tristan more no matter what he does. I think the big lesson in this movie is that sometimes we can't help what the heart wants and it can be very difficult to ignore even when we must.
