Shameless pitch, but if any GoT watchers here want an antidote to this show, I HIGHLY recommend "The Last Kingdom." Grimdark (the genre of fantasy that GoT is written in) is known for its ruthlessness. It can be hard to continue watching sometimes that's for sure.

Without saying what specifically, in the books there were extra problems going on in Meereen, Yunkai, and Astapor. To the point where Daenerys was backed into a corner, and the engagement to Hizdahr Zo Loraq was a last resort that she agreed to after putting it off for as long as she could. I think the writers wanted to try to make her seem more in charge by making it her decision in the show, however it comes off as confusing without the extra context from the books. To clarify, Seasons 1 and 2 are books 1 and 2. Seasons 3 and 4 is the third book split in two. It seems like the writers had originally wanted to drag out the series, however with books 4 and 5 that was made into season 5. Despite that those two books, the largest in the series currently, could have made into another two or three seasons. Books 4 and 5 are the same novel split between mostly the Westeros POVs and the Essos POVs. Because the last two books were and still are unfinished, the writers had to cut newly introduced characters from books 4 and 5 since there was not enough writing material to go off of for them. Despite that Author George R R Martin did give an outline for how the story ended to the show runners so there'd be a guideline after running out of books, it came down to attempting to blend the line between book adaption and guidelines adaption. Thus season five was a much more rough adaptation of books 4 and 5, than the other seasons had been for the other books.
