Whoops! I think this comment was supposed to go on a post of yours from earlier about cosmic alpha 3

I think I saw a post on Reddit of system76 at the recent Ubuntu anniversary. IIRC Carl mentioned the beta is now targeted for early 2025 (February?). In any case I'd rather they take their time and do it right as long as they can keep their business operating well too. If cosmic 1.0 lands well it will be well worth the wait for the entire community IMO

The concept for gnome os and kde os sounds pretty cool. I don't agree with the flatpak-only approach though. The only things that it allows you to install are GUI apps. If you need a driver that isn't in the kernel by default (mainly mouse drivers like razer and logitech), or you use some kind of CLI tool like compilers, then you are out of luck.

Personally I like having the DE and distro separate so they can both focus.

They both sound interesting, but I wonder what GNOME OS would offer that Fedora Silverblue doesn't? I hope the official KDE OS makes it easier for them to build and package plasma.

I don't think that Gnome and KDE having their own distros will impact other distros using those desktop environments.
Distros are free to package the desktop environments the way they please, for example Ubuntu ships Gnome with their custom dock extension amongst other customization while Fedora ships a more vanilla Gnome and I don't think that such customizations will stop if Gnome and KDE have their own distro.
Gnome and KDE having their own distro means that they can ship newer features much faster than other distros that have a slower release schedule, like debian for example, while still giving users an usable desktop thanks to the use of an immutable system, which easily lets you roll back your system to an anterior working state.

Excellent news for Mint!
I understand your point about KDE and Gnome having a distribution where they control everything. But I'm not sure if it's the best for the whole Linux ecosystem and the different distributions.

Hi Nick! I'd love to see video on kde os and gnome os!

Shipping Gnome and KDE in a custom immutable distro that ships the latest bells and whistles for both desktop environments is a pretty interesting idea.
They could do easy rollbacks and maybe give the option to choose between different channels in the same fashion as Ublue does where you can pick to be on the latest version of Fedora or stay one version behind.
Good news for Linux Mint to be partnering with Framework, it's always good to see more computers being sold with Linux preinstalled and properly tested.
It's reassuring to see Mint doing well financially and managing to get partnerships, at least if Ubuntu goes full on corporate bs with their snaps, LMDE will be there to be the non fuss and easy to use distro in place of Ubuntu.

Very interesting. So Arch Linux pulls ahead. This will stir Ubuntu and others into action for sure.
