My observation is that big projects take on the personality of the project's "fearless leader", and it becomes integral to the project's culture. I've always seen Gnome's fearless leader, Miguel de Icaza as a bit of a jerk. He kowtowed to Microsoft at a time when that wasn't great for Linux. He persisted in dumbing down Gnome until it felt crippled to me. He's no longer working on Gnome, but I think his people continue the attitude and culture. Another example is the Systemd project, which inherits Poettering's arrogance. These people, unfortunately, are also the best at marketing themselves to arrogant self-interested corporations. But I do go on... (sorry for the rant)

I think GNOME's take here is "fixing other desktop's UI is a waste of effort, because n one should do it". They probably agree with you, just not on the end result :D

The Linux Experiment

It's just my opinion, but I find it stupid that on the Linux desktop, desktop environments want to have their own platform ecosystem, it's not like it wasn't already hard enough for each project to have enough contributors and money to sustain their work. Desktop environments teams having to fix another DE's apps look and feel is just a dumb situation to be in, it's a waste of effort that could be avoided by having more teamwork between the people working on each desktop environment. Gnome in particular tends to have snobby people working for their project and such an attitude is detrimental to the Linux desktop where teamwork and helping each other out is a necessity if we want Linux to succeed on the desktop.
