Character Ask Game (With Kree and Clara) Part 2

These questions are from a post by @grumpy-triceratops on tumblr called 🌸My Super Long Hopefully Fun Character Ask Game.

There are six different sections of questions including this one, and over time I'll answer them all!
For reference:
🌿 = Clara
🪶 = Kree

1. Is there an item your character doesn't like to leave without?

🌿: When she lives with her Aunt Ava, Clara almost never leaves the house without a drop spindle and distaff because spinning yarn is such a time consuming yet important task. It was vital to her to be able to spin yarn wherever she went. But she tends to not bring them when she knows she’ll be carrying a lot of stuff or concentrating on something else.

🪶: Kree has gotten used to completely leaving behind nests filled with items he’s collected throughout the years. Not all harpies have to migrate every year, but weaker/ unmated harpies almost always have to since there is not much space in the southern forests during summertime. Kree often finds other harpies’ abandoned nests, but it’s bad taste to use them for extended periods since harpies take pride in their nest building skills.

2. What gift would your character give to someone they didn't like but felt obligated to?

🌿: Clara would likely gift a jar of tea that she herself isn’t that fond of and only made due to the plant being available. That or a skein of yarn that had been sitting in the project bin for too long. She’d see it as an opportunity to give use to an item she hasn’t been able to use.

🪶: Gifts are very meaningful to harpies. They are one of the main ways to strengthen relationships. Harpies who have had a spat are often encouraged to give gifts to one another in order to make up, so even if Kree didn’t like the person he was giving a gift to, he would do his best to find something they would genuinely like. 

3. What type of object is likely to catch your character's attention?

🌿: Clara will almost always stop to admire a new plant she hasn’t seen before or isn’t able to identify immediately. 

🪶: Something shiny and small that can be easily swiped.

4. Is there an item your character liked that they can’t get back?

🌿: The urge to say her parents is strong here lol! But I'd say the collection of botanical books and journals her parents always traveled with. She used to (try to) read them in inns while her parents were out.

🪶: I don’t know if it counts but Kree really misses his childhood nest/ the area he grew up. His parents were strong and respected enough to have their own permanent space in the southern forest before the area burned down.

5. Would your character ever try to haggle?

🌿: What a mortifying concept. If the starting price is too expensive, Clara either needs it enough to pay for it or leaves. Aunt Ava has tried her best to get her to haggle, but her lessons don’t stick until Clara is much older and needs to save money in order to raise Laurel.

🪶: Harpies don’t deal in money, and often don’t trade much between themselves. They prefer gifting their excess things freely without expecting to get anything back. Overt greed is rare and discouraged in harpy culture but two harpies who know each other well may bicker over what they trade for what.

6. What is something your character is proud to own?

🌿: Kree’s mating feather. It is a part of her that she displays in her hair proudly.

🪶: If you asked Kree this he would likely say “Clara” because he wouldn't quite understand the nuance between ‘owning’ her and having her as a mate. She is his just like how the heart beating in his chest is his. Kree sees himself as hers in the same way.

7. Does your character ever spend more than they have?

🌿: Clara avoids borrowing money like the plague. She would rather do without than ask for help, not because of pride but because she does not want to be a burden.

🪶: Kree does not deal in money, but if he did he’d be sooo broke from mismanagement lol.

8. What would it take for your character to give up an item they really like?

🌿: Saying you really need it. With most things she’d hand it right over. This does not include Kree’s feather since you would have to pry it out of her skull before she’d give it up.

🪶: Depending on the item not much, but he’d have to like the person asking. Kree is very willing to trade trinkets or share food.

9. Does your character prefer to give or receive gifts?

🌿: Clara believes she is bad at both, but she learns to love receiving gifts and not getting embarrassed over them since it’s one of the major ways Kree shows affection.

🪶: Kree LOVES both, but he feels a special satisfaction in gifting.

10. Is there a type of object your character doesn’t like?

🌿: It’s more that she’s afraid of breaking them, but Clara is not fond of fragile dinnerware.

🪶: Weapons. He doesn’t mind knives but swords, guns, snares, anything man made that kills or traps something else is not something he ever wants to own.

11. What might an acquaintance think is a good gift for your character?

🌿: A book on plants. (She likely already knows a lot that’s in it)

🪶: Food or shiny objects. (They’d be correct)

12. Does your character personify objects?

🌿: Clara may say sorry to things she drops but other than not not particularly.

🪶: Kree definitely talks/sings to inanimate objects as he goes about his day but this is something he started to do when he was on his own for a long time as an adolescent.

13. What does your character most enjoy shopping for?

🌿: Clara is not a huge fan of shopping, but she did have a lot of fun picking out fabric and ribbons to sew up dresses for baby Laurel.

🪶: Kree likes trading items to passing harpies to see what they have collected from places far away.

14. Is there an item your character is embarrassed they own or want?

🌿: Clara always peeks inside romance novels at the bookstore but can never bring herself to buy one.

🪶: Kree sometimes wishes he had breasts. Not in a gender way, but because he loves Clara’s chest and thinks that, because her ex was a girl, maybe she’d prefer if he was more like a human woman. But he knows other harpies would find him VERY strange since not even female harpies have breasts.

15. Would your character prefer something bought or made personally?

🌿: Clara would feel more warm inside from something made personally, but something bought can also be extremely meaningful and well thought out. She just wishes Kree would stop stealing the gifts he gives her.

🪶: Where the gift came from or even what it is doesn’t matter to Kree, its all about who gives it to him.

16. Is your character willing to ask for things?

🌿: Only after she fails to get/ do it on her own. When she had no other choice.

🪶: Yes, but only when he feels the other is capable and willing to provide it for him.

17. What is most important to your character when shopping?

🌿: Getting in and out of there as fast as possible so she can go back home.

🪶: Getting a close look at everything interesting. If Kree could walk freely though human shops he’d spend all day there.
