There were a lot of great suggestions on how to finish this one, but in the end I went for simple and cartoony! The timing just really works perfectly for it.
Also, again, ignore the flashing background colours. It's something inherent to gifs that I cannot fix.
I haven't yet decided on an ending for this one, but here's how the kick counter KO is looking so far! Something nice and fourth-wall breaking for the final fight. I'm currently considering whether to have Roxxie just finish it with a gas blast, or whether to have her bounce back off, then either have Texas slide down the screen, or have her peel off 2D. The latter would be... a very difficult effect to pull off, but it's the idea I like the most.
Feel free to suggest any more possibilities in the comments, and I'll finish this one up on Wednesday!
Edit: Oh, and ignore the flashing background colours. That's due to converting the animation to a gif and won't be in the game.
And we're back to animation! Starting Roxxie's grabs off with something simple, the end piece of her basic attack combo, the butt-drop. This is the version for if Texas has HP left, but we'll do a KO version on Wednesday, so stay tuned for that!
The first demo of Roxxie's fight, I.E. the one without her grab moves, has been released for $10 patrons! Do let me know if there are any issues as always, but please also note that I will be taking the usual post-demo week off starting on the 28th (this Saturday). I'm intending to use the rest of this week for bug fixing, then taking that break, so get any bug reports in quickly, please!
Sadly the game is only growing in size and becoming more of a resource hog. Due to the version of GameMaker I am using, the game loads all assets right at the start and there's nothing I can do about it. This does mean it can cause significant lag/slowdown and really hog memory when you first open it, so I would recommend closing any other programs you have running if you're on an older laptop or similar device.
Thankfully, there is a fix for this, which is to upgrade to GameMaker 2, and that is my intention, but first I have to learn GM2, which I will hopefully be dedicating some of my week off to doing.
After the week off, we'll be back to the usual 3 days Texas, 2 days Superhero schedule, so you can expect a resumption in art and animation for BOTH projects following that break. The assets of the superhero project will continue to be posted here until I can get the first demo of that completed, and then give it it's own separate Patreon page.
As always everyone, thank you so much for your continued support, and I hope you all enjoy the demo!
Another Edit: Turns out I broke the entire rest of the game with this update, and no-one noticed until now. It's now fixed though!
Edit: I've uploaded an updated version of the fight, though it really isn't that different from the previous version, with the main changes being:
-April's health no longer regenerates -The arena's been aligned properly (it was causing an oddly coloured stripe on the left side of the screen) -Roxxie can no longer be lassoed when thrown, which could cause her to get perma-stunlocked. -An added sound effect for Roxxie's butt slap on the April KO. -100% more trains.
Alright! Here she is. Roxxie Roo ready to come out swinging! This is the demo of the BASIC version of the Roxxie Roo fight, AKA the version without any grab moves, because I have not animated them yet. As always, do let me know what you think, especially regarding her difficulty, though I hesitate to make her any easier. A Few Things To Note:
1) If you are on an older laptop, I would recommend closing discord, chrome or any other programs like that. As I'm sure you all know, the game is quite a resource hog, and it's only getting more hungry. I am working to solve this issue, but really the only solution is a complete port to Gamemaker 2, which I do have planned, but it's not here just yet.
2) If you're using a controller, you'll need to use the d-pad for Roxxie's QTE attack. Sadly it was not possible to code joystick unputs for that one.
3) Remember, you can use Space/A to backdash. You might have a hard time without it in this fight.
4) If you encounter any bugs/issues, please do let me know before the end of the week. I'm dedicating the rest of this week to bugfixing, then taking my usual post-demo week off starting on the 28th.
5) Enjoy yourself! I certainly hope you will. And thank you for all your support!
Just a quick heads up that I won't be streaming on the new Tuesday and Thursday slots this week, as I instead want to use that time to get Roxxie's Game Over sequence done. And as long-time followers may know, I always do them offline to keep it a surprise! This will mean no progress on the Superhero project for this week, but I'm at a point in the project where I need to experiment with coding anyway, something else I want to do offline.
On the progress of the Roxxie bossfight: She is coming together fantastically! I am really surprised how well she's turning out and I'm pretty confident that you'll all like her. That being said, she did give me a lot of trouble today getting one of her moves coded in, but you can't expect an outlaw to be cooperative all of the time!
There are two moves left to be coded in for her (the rock throw and the boxing roo) as well as a few incidental bits of code, such as her being lassoed. After that I just need to do sound effects and music, a bit of testing, and then I can release the demo! I am confident that I can get that released before the end of the month, and then we can get back to finishing her grab animations after.
I would also just like to thank everyone again for their continued support of this weird, weird project. It's quite jarring to think that after all this time we're actually approaching the end of it, and that I need to actually start thinking more seriously about what comes next... But it is thanks to all of you, and the support you've given me, that there can actually BE a project after this.
I've just finished just over three hours of importing Roxxie sprites into Game Maker, so I am good to start coding! Long-time supporters will probably realise then that this is usually accompanied by a drought of content for a little while, as I am not working on sprites during that period, but that drought is always followed by a demo release.
It should be the same this time, though I may upload some of the sprites from the other game project I'm working on just so things aren't so dead here in the meantime. I'll see. But as always, thank you all for your support!
Take a few hits and Roxxie counters instead! This animation's basically just a recycling of another of Roxxie's attacks, but it's not meant to be anything special. Just kind of the 'average' result for the boxing attack. Basically: Take no hits and Tex counters, Take 1-2 hits and Roxxie counters, take 3-4 hits and Roxxie counters into a unique grab, but that won't be included until after the first demo.
And with that, the current boxing sprites are done! Not much of Roxxie left now until I can start coding!
Just a quick update regarding how things are going. Roxxie's basic sprites (non-grabs) are very nearly complete! All that's left is the completion of the Boxing Roo sprite, a small bicycle kick, and a leaping butt slam similar to the Leaphog move that Jesse and Jane have. Once that's done I'll be able to start coding and get a basic demo out with the start of Roxxie's fight!
I also wanted to let you know that I will be away for this upcoming week, so there will be no streams or posts going up for that period. Was meant to be going away with family but Covid put an end to that, so I'll just be taking the week to myself to clear my backlog.
Anyway, that's all for now, so take care and see you all in a week's time!
Edit: Oh god I completely forgot about the most important thing. After that week off I'll be switching to streaming five days a week, Monday through Friday! If I can maintain that schedule, I will be starting a second game project with its own Patreon page. Something small and different.
Hard to explain what this'll be in game. But kinda a QTE section with Roxxie. Anyway, this is the lead in, with her just her trying to psych Tex out, and Tex having none of it.
Fixed up the starting portion to a level I'm happy with, and now have the mid section done as well! Roxxie's putting the deputy to goooooood use. It gets real hard to scratch back there with a butt that big!
This... needs work. It has potential, but it was a rough stream to get this done. I think I'll work out how I want the middle section to animate, then come back to this and adjust accordingly. As it stands, it's lacking, and probably won't play nice with what I have in mind to come next.
