Selfie in Three Parts

Beginning the process of creating custom Christmas presents…

It’s always an unknown. Will it be appreciated? Understood?

A haiku:

I made this for you

I don’t know if you’ll like it.

My heart tells me yes.

Wednesday Walk

While I was glad to be cozy and warm indoors today, I did venture out for a Wednesday Walk.

The wind was quick to penetrate my layers with its chill, but the sky was blue and bright and the sun lovely.

Selfie in Three Parts

I am glad to be inside today. In the studio as well as editing. It’s cold outside.

Today’s haiku:

Winter’s settled in.

The wind blows through barren trees

Leaving my face chilled.

Tuesday Update

Happy Taco Tuesday! I finally got this to upload, no thanks to a little sabotaging cat...

I hope your week is going well. Here is everything that is going on with me so far this week, including a pottery update on the piece that I shared in progress last week.

Upload interrupted

Hold tight. My upload for my Tuesday Update has been interrupted. I think I have figured out why, though.

Cone Free, the Bonus Footage

It was such a great day setting my buddy free from his cone.

I had to document it.

Selfie in Three Parts

For almost a month, my buddy has had to wear a cone. He had to have a growth surgically removed from his front leg and wore the cone during recovery. While he wasn’t happy about it he was a trooper! Today the cone came off!

A haiku:

My homie’s been down

Heavy head wearing a cone.

But today he’s free!

Moving to a classic (Raspberry Redux)

Dance is a language beyond words, expressing that for which we have no words.

– Jennifer De Leon

This dance was to a favorite song and was meant to express the feelings of the moment.  It was also meant to be a canvas.  I was learning a new editing program and wanted to push some limits and try some experimental visual tweaks and how they would look with motion.

Sometimes these pieces are about learning new skills and trying to express something along the way, not about wardrobe.

Today's Drawing

Today's drawing recorded in real time.

A behind the scenes look as I draw today's drawing, dressed like Rambo but promoting a different message: kindness.

Dazzled with Kindness

A short performative piece ironically utilizing themed fireworks.

It's a dazzling display of color and smoke as I reinterpret the iconography of a weapon.

This clip made me laugh out loud more than once in the editing process.

Taking on a Rambo inspired look today.

I was imagining a world in which kindness was radicalized. Going out of one's way to be kind rather than aggressive or competitive or vengeful. Wouldn't that be lovely?

A haiku:

This is your mission,

Should you choose to accept it:

Take aim with kindness.

Swim in a Freezing Body of Water

I'm happy to repost this one!

I'd been working my way through The Marina Abramovich Method, Instruction Cards to Reboot Your Life. The instruction for this exercise was simple: swim in a freezing body of water. But freezing bodies of water are hard to come by in Georgia in the summer. I had to come up with an alternative way to complete this one.

I filled my inflatable swimming pool and added several bags of ice to effectively bring down the temperature. For visual interest, I added flowers and leaves. This was the final result.

Abramovich is hands down my favorite performance artist. If a performance piece has been done, she likely did it first. There is so much to learn from what she brings to this particular art form.

Spinning

This is a short performative piece set on a cold winter day at dusk.

In my favorite boots, I set out to spin.

Perhaps a commentary on the cyclical nature of life as we spin around the sun repeating our own patterns and habits.

Experimental iron oxide

I’m never sure how glazes or colors will turn out.

With the success on the white clay on my previous chawan, I feel a little more emboldened with the iron oxide. So I went even heavier on this piece. It was then covered with a clear glaze. I’ll share the final results when this has been fired!

Stitches for Steps

While normally on Wednesday I'd be taking and filming a walk, today was not that kind of day.  I stayed inside due to the cold temperatures.

Instead of getting my steps in, I finished up my vest while staying close to the heater in the studio.

Behind the Scenes: Kurinuki

What is a kurinuki?

Kurinuki is a Japanese term that refers to the process of carving from a solid block of clay to obtain interior space.

Here is a behind the scenes look as I explore the process!

Full Deck

Can you imagine the oldest form of graffiti? It might surprise you!

While this particular type of drawing may strike the mind and memory of the kind of rudimentary art of middle school aged boys, there are current samples of it at Roman excavation sights dating back to 1700 years old.

I never went through the phase of drawing penises. I mean, I drew live models all through college, including penises when they suited my compositions and drawings. Just not by themselves as free standing motifs. Haha, free standing!

At any rate, I tried it this weekend and created a full deck of dicks.

Making some noise (behind the scenes)

A session of making music.

I set up the Kaossilator and the Donner Synth Bass to work on some music making.

I was pretty pleased with the beat and sound of it all as I bopped to the beat. I paired it all with some recent footage of sky time lapses and the patterns created on the Kaossilator.

It's a behind the scenes look at the process.

OK Redux

This is one of my favorite locations that I've filmed for a walk.

It was a very hot and sticky day. I'd just been to a flea market at Atlanta's Starlight Drive-In. They do drive-in movies by night, and a flea market by day. I'd never been there before. It was one of the first outings I'd had after a global pandemic.

The abandoned strip mall had repainted facades from what I can only imagine was a pop up art event. It looked incredible. By the light of day, on the day I was there, it was still completely abandoned. I was struck by the large letters painted in a prime spot. Large, visible from the highway, bearing what was once an ominous message. But repainted with a slight change that promoted hope.

I'm happy to repost one of my favorite walks!

In Plain Sight

A mission to Mars. A secret code in the parachute. It's fascinating.

There are secret messages embedded all over the place. Including within some of my own work!

Clues are hidden everywhere, which is why I appreciate this story so much. Thanks to the artwork of Tom Sachs, I get to enjoy the secret codes of the Jet Propulsion Laboratories in a t-shirt that I can wear!

I was thrilled to receive such a t-shirt from a fan in the mail today. Join me as I try it on and tell you all about it!

Things to be grateful for

As planned: my Thanksgiving Day feast of homemade pecan pie and ultra deluxe nachos.

It was a quiet and relaxing day, with plenty of gratitude.

I am so thankful for you! Thank you for the support with your dollars, time, and interest. It means the world to me that you believe in me and my work.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Redux Pow Pow Pow

An oldie, but goody.

In this performative piece: a dance wearing my moccasin boots. There's something a bit other worldly about this one with the use of repetition, dramatic shadows, and a reversal of film and sound.

Wednesday Walk

Today was a gray and cool day. Definitely feels like the edge of winter creeping in.

I donned my velvet cape for today's walk. I made this cape myself, and have just now made a vow to find even more occasions to wear it. Superheroes and villains shouldn't be the only ones to enjoy capes!

In Progress

I’ve been excited to share about a new project! I hinted at it in yesterday’s Tuesday Update.

Beginning next year, I’ll be starting regular installments of a zine. While this is not an official zine, I needed a topic and to practice the proof of concept. I figured I’d go with the theme of Thanksgiving, since it is the season.

I still need to work out much more of this process, so I’ll be practicing more. But I’m so excited to explore all aspects of this unique medium of self expression and creativity!

You will likely notice that the last page is blank. I intend to include some pics of my Thanksgiving nachos and pecan pie that I’ll make and enjoy tomorrow.

Gesture Drawing Part II

Yesterday I shared a video of creating a self portrait on canvas with acrylic paint.

This is part two, as I pick up the paintbrush again and add some color!

Tuesday Update!

Happy Taco Tuesday!

On this rainy afternoon, I set up a new piece of equipment. It seems to work well, and I'm looking forward to seeing what it can do for my videos.

I hope your week is going well!

Today's Drawing

Today's drawing was created on canvas with acrylic paint. It's a switch in mediums from the charcoal and paper that I normally use. That being said, it also took a bit longer than the charcoal drawings. I've edited the video with a higher speed during the drawing/painting part to make it a more manageable length.

It was fun to be using a paintbrush in my selfie painting!

Selfie in Three Parts

The selfie in three parts consists of an instant photo, representing how others see me; a self portrait, representing how I see myself; and a haiku, representing my thoughts and feelings.

Today’s drawing was done on canvas with acrylic paint. This gives me an opportunity to work spontaneously. Still incorporating the use of my mirror, but I’ll be able to come back to it later and work on it further.

The sky was particularly dynamic today, and I found myself mesmerized. Lingering as I looked up and admired it. Thus the motivation for the instant pic.

Today’s haiku:

Looking at the clouds

Makes me feel like I could fly.

I’ll just pretend to.
