The request was for a "weedle equivalent" but I wasn't too sure how I should go about that, so, the result is kind of just literally how weedle might look in Mortasheen's style :)
You can download the full size file on this post, and see all the messy flaws in the shading! This piece of art has around 40 layers.....I am really bad at keeping that organized and I tend to make multiple layers of just shading and different highlighting I can keep editing or turn off if I change my mind.
The shape of the body with the large "hips" is actually the same as the leaf shape of an actual venus fly trap. This monster was a redo of "Widoweed," a much older one, but I updated the name to be a bit more interesting too, coming from the word "lascivious."
As you can work out from its description on bogleech.com, those are bile generating glands on its chest, not whatever else you thought they were; hence the unpleasant gill-like slits I added on them.
The head went through many ideas over the years including simple pod heads with no facial features or hair, but I finally settled on a simple, weird alien mouth that happens to resemble puckered lips, and a greasy hairdo I think came out cute.
I overuse these kinds of purple and pink colors, but it is a real color scheme some cultivars of fly trap can have! Of course many plants, including fly traps, will turn red and purple if they're getting too much sunlight. It doesn't harm them; they just stop needing as much green chlorophyll, if I remember right
A monster inspired by the defense mechanism of the flower urchin, by which I mean I just directly stole the flower urchin's venomous "cups" and put them on a different thing.
The "hands" are very lazy and messy and I'll probably rework them. I may also mess with colors since they feel a little muddled right now.
Like its sea urchin inspiration the colorful cups have sharp edges, pinch when they close up and inject an unbelievably painful chemical. They come off very easily, sticking in the skin, and the monster can scatter them around like rose petals.
This is how plain a Mortasheen looks within the first hour of drawing it! COLORS AREN'T FINAL - I usually pick random ones at first, and adjust them in the final stages. Choosing light, clashing colors at first makes it kind of easier to plot out the shading and highlighting.
This is a more powerful cousin to the Junjo; soon we'll have a whole subfamily of 3-5 screwed up "mermaids."
I didn't share this one already did I?? I move them to a different folder after I upload them on here in an effort to remember, but I recently switched computers!
Does anyone object to me uploading these pages for all patreon tiers??
If you haven't kept up on my tumblr, bogleech.com has been having hosting problems for the first time since it was created. First it was our original host's security certificate breaking, causing broken images and pages for hundreds of users, and the hosting staff couldn't help me at all.
Then we moved to hostgator, and during none of that process did they tell us that the site was big enough to run out of bandwidth. It only took a week or two for that to happen and shut the site down for the month, which means it's not really worth updating any of my content there until we move someplace else again that isn't so restrictive.
I have everyone's review requests, creepypastas, some final Halloween posts and the start of Pokemon reviews all ready to go, but it's all going to have to be put on hold a little while or people won't even all get to see it.
I'll try to compensate by putting up some more Patreon-exclusive art than usual, including maybe a nice chunk of Mortasheen concepts, and I might see if I can set it up for you guys to actually vote on what monsters I'll be drawing next for that.
I was asked how I'd redesign a classic children's character I also grew up with, and to be honest, I wouldn't really make her any more insect-like than the cartoon I used to watch. I'd just give her much bigger eyes to feel more insect-y, a wider bigger mouth which I think is a lot cuter, and more raggedy-ann sort of hair.
I guess she came out looking a little like if Fern were a bee though
Xurkitree's kind of perfect as-is, but I was paid a little to come up with design ideas for an evolution that might appear in a fan game some day! I thought of two possibilities, one playing up its "tree" aspet more and one diving deeper into its "power line" aspect.
My Zhar doodle is kind of lazy....I actually couldn't think of a better design than the official clump of thousands of tentacles, joined to another one by some sort of umbilicus.
I wasn't sure how to stylize them, so I came up with both a water/steel chainsaw loach and a water/electric video game controller loach. I'm not really sure what I was thinking with the latter.
Sally Bowl thinks they're best friends, but BBQ can't STAND her...and especially can't stand how much she brags about the totally empty head of hers, with nothing in it that BBQ can perceive which obviously means it isn't anything that matters.
