Working on my new insect book, plus mortasheen, plus awful hospital, plus my novel, it's obvious I won't be able to continue doing the full color art requests - which already had a tendency to fall behind.
Would anyone be really disappointed if I retired those for the time being, but as compensation, opened "review requests" for ALL patrons?
You could finally just tell me a creature or monster you want me to analyze, and I'd do it! This would be easy since it wouldn't require me drawing anything new, and the reviews could go up on a special section of bogleech.com, like how I do the digimon reviews.
I figured from day one of Awful Hospital that I'd have a doctor based on a gynecological speculum. It's a tool that looks like a weird metal bird head and everyone (rightfully) hates it, so how could it possibly not be a monster? Trouble is, it's a tool whose purpose isn't exactly work-safe, and is tied to a lot of bad history and traumatic experiences for a lot of people.
This made me feel like I had to conceive this character kind of delicately. At first, I'd sketched a tiny, googly-eyed metal duck doctor with a rubber glove body, which I hoped would be so pitiful and stupid looking that it would lesson any ick-factor. I also imagined the character as a male doctor who was totally clueless about reproductive anatomy, a dig at an unfortunately all-too-common experience a lot of my friends and family have had, but I decided I didn't want that for my comic, and it was also redundant with the kook personality of Phage.
In the end, I went hard in the other direction. I made Gynnie big and downright nightmarish, a physical embodiment of everything intimidating about trusting a doctor with your orifices, with an eyeball inside of the "mouth" to represent someone peering through the speculum and a slimy tongue to just make it, well, really super creepy.
But I gave this terrifying thing the least terrifying personality I could. A totally kind, sweet, well meaning, motherly doctor who truly wants what's best for her patients and knows her stuff. In other words, someone who seems scary and alarming but is exactly who you want to be in charge of you, and anything "wrong" with her in the comic right now is the fault of our villains corrupting the hospital around her.
There is no hand or arm inside that glove, if you were wondering. In fact, it's only filled with a dense lymph fluid. The metallic parts are also fully flexible, despite still having the texture and sturdiness of stainless steel.
Cheryl is, as a lot of readers noticed, an evolution of a character design from my old jokey wecomic, a "creepy" mom who torments her own easily frightened child.
I knew she'd have to show up in Awful Hospital sooner or later, but I was never quite sure what she would be like. I officially consider her a completely different character at this point and the original comics not canon with her, especially considering the designs have gotten fairly different.
She is NOT related to Miss, or to any other character we've seen. She's also not from any of the creepypastas, nor is her dog the one from the Fleagood story.
I didn't really intend her to be so thick when I drew her, but it's honestly incredibly hard to draw thinner people unless you're really exaggerating it like I did with Jay. She might look a little skinnier if she actually stands up...it's a pretty baggy sweater.
She's one of many grey-zoners who are partially or fully "branchinated," able to navigate the zones as freely as other beings.
For those who never saw my "edgy" old comedy comics, I've attached one of the most iconic of those that featured proto-Cheryl. Another reason these comics are no longer canon is that I don't think she would have the same child in Awful Hospital continuity.....but it's quite possible she has, or has had, this same husband.
A character from Strange School, a webcomic that takes a bit after Awful Hospital - but definitely became its own distinct and cool thing!
I decided to not just draw Penny but how I would make Penny a slob in Awful Hospital.
I actually had a concept for a chewed-up pencil teacher character in the setting once, but he was too similar in design to Phleboto.

Until then, however, here's a HEAVILY altered concept for my personal original pokemon region. Many have been imported from my first one, but there are just as many new and altered concepts.
Whittling down the ones that are too "mortasheen-like" continues to be difficult. I tried to balance every "me" concept with something I thought was more broadly cool or cute. Of course, more than half the pokemon of gen 7 had obscure biology or spookiness or something to my tastes going on...

I already posted this page to tumblr, but without actual pokemon details; these are my updates concepts for Muk, Weezing and Garbodor fusion forms, which I like a lot more than the ones I did some ten years back.
They are as follows:
Weezodor - Smog Cloud Pokemon - Poison/Flying - Aftermath/Poison Heal
"It makes its territory within clouds it has darkened with its poison. It may explode if punctured."
"It forms tentacles from toxic gases. A single touch will sicken prey for weeks."
Mukking - Slime Pokemon - Poison/Water - Liquid Ooze/Gooey
"Its shell-like head protects its slimy body from drying out. Its fluid limbs can stretch hundreds of feet."
"The more it eats, the more slime it produces. It lurks in filthy swamps and ambushes trespassers."
Garmuk - Decay Pokemon - Poison/Ground - Corrosion/Stench
"A lazy scavenger that can consume almost many material. It may sleep for many years at a time deep within landfills."
"It forms a body from collected dust, dirt and scraps of junk. Its touch can rust metal."
An "acid rain" weather move has long been a popular fan concept, and if I were designing a gen, it would be exclusive to this trio, probably doing damage every turn to non-poison pokemon while boosting poison type's speed stat.
To create these pokemon, you would need to take the two to be fused into a pool of toxic waste.
Obviously I do a whole lot of work these days that can slow down what I manage to update on my patreon, and I feel bad about it, but nobody's really complained yet. You totally can, though, or at least remind me here of anything you've been missing that you want to see more of.
Suggestions for new things I could offer would also be appreciated; some old content is just plain starting to run out!
Snot is actually the grossest thing in the world to me. I can't stand it, and I can't stand being sick enough to produce it, but that was pretty much my whole childhood; one big continuous war against sinusitis. This is the one Awful Hospital character that would actually distress me to be around, so I made it as distressing as possible to myself. I guess I find noses in general to be the grossest body part and almost wish we didn't have them at all...they've only ever caused me trouble.
Nose was originally imagined as elderly, rather than a child, but I think he makes a lot more sense as a childlike being, and is a whole lot more sympathetic that way.
Organ characters in the series don't typically have facial featurs added to them, and I actually kind of regret doing that here. I feel like Nose shouldn't have the mouth with teeth and that he would simultaneously be both cuter and eerier without them. I don't intend to go back and change him, though, so I rationalize that he's allowed to have a mouth because a nose and mouth are both used to smell with, something that not a lot of people know. Try breathing in through your mouth and nose simultaneously the next time you're trying to smell something!
The glowing yellow eyes, though....I don't know what those would even be.

I had it in mind years ago to eventually have some fellow moms and dads in the hospital, and always planned one to be a Silent Hill homage. She's a combination of design elements used throughout the first three Silent Hill games, but doesn't reference any one specific monster.
She inhabits a zone that sometimes bleeds into other zones in order for its denizens to feed, but they can only consume beings who know on some level that they "deserve" it. Nearly everyone they end up eating is kind of a bad person.
Been quite a while since we had a new character who would warrant one of these!
