Touching base ... 2!!

Hey guys! Next Short is coming along nicely (lil preview of the first scene)

Super quick rundown on the important stuff:
Billing will be paused for next month, this means if you're subbed right now you won't be charged for August, and new patrons won't be able to sign up during this time. This pause will be effective starting tomorrow.
The next Short might come in a little after the start of August, which is partially the reason for the pause, the other reason is that I'm going to be shifting the current incentive model a bit.
Shorts aren't going to be released monthly going forward. There was never a set date for them in the first place but it was always sort of an unspoken thing that you'd get one sometime during each month. That is going to change and in their place will be "mini animations".
Monthly polls for mini animations will be started this coming month on the 10th to shore up the "name in credits" incentive for Kurger Combo patrons. More details on that below.

To get a little more into detail:
I'm not gonna bore you with whining about how much work these Shorts are for poor little ol' me, because honestly I fuckin' love making them. But they do take time, and the more I raise my bar for their quality, the more time they demand.
I'm perfectly happy with this but I'm finding that between making a video game and also making a new Short each month, the time tables just don't add up and one will inevitably have to suffer a loss of monthly labor. I am a game developer first so between the two I have to let the shorts get less time each month. This however also means they can be higher quality, since I don't have to crank them out as fast.

For the rest of this year or until it's completed, releasing a full version of Visca's Earth Conquest is my very top priority. Shorts derailed this goal somewhat, which isn't even really a bad thing because I think they helped the growth of the patreon a lot, but I'm very serious about following through on my promise of finishing VEC and the more time a game spends in development purgatory the less likely it is to be finished. Because of that, patrons should expect a pretty long drought on Shorts until VEC is finished.

As I said above, in place of the monthly credits incentive, I will be doing a poll for mini animations on the 10th of each month. If you need an example on what to expect for these mini animations, look at "Raccoon Balloon". The goal is to essentially hop straight into the "good stuff" without worrying about a narrative set-up, while adding some satisfying sound design to it. The poll will present 3 different types of scenarios for patrons to vote on, and the comment section will be where future scenarios can be suggested.

Since this isn't what patrons signed up for exactly, I thought it only fair to pause the billing and let people get a taste for this new direction and decide if it's something they'd want to stay subbed for.

Hello everyone! First of all I want to give all of you a huge HUGE thank you, I'm genuinely blown away by your generous support. I know the thank you's can kind of blend together after being said so many times but just know when I say it I really really mean it.

I'm so glad people are liking the Kurger Shorts, I'm starting to get a better handle on making them, and they're a ton of fun to write, though they do demand some time to make. I think it's safe to say that they're kind of the main reason many people are here, which brings me to my main topic.

Visca's Earth Conquest is a pretty hefty time commitment, more than I had anticipated (shocker, lol). The biggest issue is that Game Maker's implementation of Spine2d is really janky and cumbersome to work with (because the runtime is not made by the Spine2d team themselves), and the issue only compounds with each new added sprite and animation. Another big issue is that I don't think the game loop scales very well with long play sessions. The idea sounds good on paper but in practice I think it can feel a bit bland after playing for more than an hour, and the solution would probably be something like adding more complex combat, which would end up overcomplicating what is meant to be a mechanically simple game. That's sort of the nature of game development though, things that sound good on paper usually don't work exactly the same once it starts coming together. I think as the game is now it works better as a relatively short experience.

The original plan was to make it pretty content-heavy (a big world with lots of areas) and then charge a few bucks for it on release, however at this point thanks to how many wonderful people are willing to support my work, I'm going to scale the game down and release it for free. My hope is that I will be able to get it done on my original vague release date of "end of 2023" and be able to move back to working on Lilith's Lair, which is a game I think plays more to my strengths.

That being said, you guys are the reason I'm able to do what I'm doing in the first place so if you have an issue with this change please don't hesitate to let me know. If you're giving me your hard-earned money you deserve to be heard. You can do it in the comments or a direct message if you wanna keep it private.

Visca's Earth Conquest Devlog #3: Concept art of your Boss, user interface, and upgrade items!

More Visca stuff! The story has been somewhat loose in my head for a while now (since the gameplay concept came first before anything) but it's starting to crystallize more and more as I'm putting together a playable build (which should be ready somewhat soon, fingers crossed).

Visca is a grunt working for a super AI which pilots a fully self-sufficient spacecraft that was called Ambition. Ambition launched from earth 80 years ago, her mission was to go out into the far reaches of space to see if there was any intelligent life beyond our solar system. The decades of sleepless solitude eroded Ambition's sanity, turning her into a misanthropic maniac hell-bent on destroying humanity.

An earlier pass at her design was to have her be a cluster of machinery that "incidentally" resembled a human form:

This was because at the time I wasn't sure if she originated from earth, and even if she did, if she hated humanity why would she intentionally look like one? 

While there are things about this design I enjoy, and the idea is interesting to me, it feels kind of convoluted and hamstrung to try and pull it off in this way. Either it doesn't feel like a coincidence, or she doesn't look like a hot babe and I REFUSE to not have the player be bossed around by a hot lady. So rather than her mindset being "I hate humans" it can be "I'm humans but better".

The plan is to have her cut in every now and then with helpful advice or dumb banter. Of course it'll be a matter of seeing it in practice because that's always a fine line between being charming or being disruptive and annoying.

Lilith's Lair Devlog #4

An encounter with a troubled bandit! What will Bellagarth the Brave do??
Fun fact this minigame right here was what put the brainworm in my head that I would need to learn Spine2d because my method for having those fire spots "stick" the bandit properly was...

...painful.

I needed each fire instance to stay tracked onto it's respective body part (fire on the left thigh needed to stick to the left thigh etc) and when you're trying to track a part of a bitmap animation, the only real answer is just to write down coordinates (I'm sure there's some other mumbo jumbo you could do but I'm not einstein). 

I had to hand jam the unique coordinates for each and every body part for each and every animation, which when all is said and done wasn't that bad. I didn't have an absurd amount of high-frame animations to do it with so while it was certainly tedious work, it wasn't unbearable. The problem is that this method scales HORRIBLY; should I decide to want to tweak something, or add new animations, the compounded workload is way bigger than it needs to be. Hence the need to learn skeletal animation methods (note that I do really like doing animations the good old way, and don't ever intend to stop, just that certain instances greatly benefit from skeletal animations).

If you've a keen eye, you might've noticed that the last video ended on the expectation that you would see a dragon! I'm going to leave that for when you actually play the game, and also the encounter with the titular vampire herself will be left for when you actually play the game (I can't just spoil the whole game, can I?)
Which means that as of right now as far as actual gameplay footage, this is all you're probably going to get of Lilith's Lair for a while. I may share some plans for other routes but this game also predicates itself on the element of surprise, so while I'm happy to share some things, I can't share it all and would prefer you see certain things for yourself.

Lilith's Lair Devlog #3: Some concept art, and the design philosophy of this gratuitous grayscale adventure!

The plan from the get-go for Lilith's Lair was to make a game that zeroed in entirely on the kink aspect, where skill is a complete non-factor in a player's enjoyment, so making a story based point-and-click kind of fit like a glove in that regard. I could just make fun set-pieces where the player could decide the fate of the poor protagonist, and adding dumb kink minigames to the mix would be no problem.

Though I really have no clue how it might run on mobile browsers at this point, the idea that someone could potentially play the game on safari on their iPhone is really funny so I couldn't help but at least leave the possibility open by making the whole game controlled with just the left mouse button, which also helps with making the whole game as simple to control as possible.

The game's art being in greyscale was adopted before I even began drawing concept art, primarily because of the time it would save as far as color composition (since I'm dogshit at that and also partially colorblind), and what better setting for a black-and-white game than a spooky vampire one? and who better to take on a spooky vampire babe than a homage to an homage of Conan the Barbarian?

Minor update on the [Kurger COMBO] Tier

First off I want to say THANK YOU to everyone who pledged for both tiers. No matter which one you picked they both help me out a lot and I've been genuinely floored at how many people are supporting already. I'm trying to avoid getting overly mushy about it but just, thank you. Really and truly.

Anyway, onto the Kurger COMBO tier. I had planned from the outset to order the credits by time spent pledged, but didn't want to mention that until I was sure I could find a streamlined way to manage it. Luckily for me Patreon generates a CSV file which makes the process pretty easy.
So when you see you see your name in the credits of my next short (as well as the current one, Fiery Frog Wife, when it goes public), the names will be listed in order of time spent pledged, down to the second.

If you un-pledge your name will still be in the credits for bigger projects like games because you did support it's creation regardless of how long you pledged for, but it will be lower on the list, below all the active patrons.

Lilith's Lair Devlog #2: An exclusive look at the first 4 minutes of the weight gain route!

That's right! She gets fat! Who would've thought!

The dialogue system in this game was kind of a doozy to put together, though I am quite happy with the result. Having the text crawl be whole words at a time, and having it pause at punctuation gives it an effect that I like.

Most of the minigames will be similar to this one. Though the level of player involvement will vary (this one is especially low), none of them will be difficult. I view them less as minigames and more as like, "digital toys", kind of. All minigames will have a post-completion phase where you can play around with whatever's on screen for however long you'd like until you're ready to move forward.

This is not all I have completed of the game, so keep your eyes peeled for the next part of the Zhulak Tower later down the line!

Visca's Earth Conquest Devlog #2: An in-depth look at the mechanics and current state of the game :D

Lilith's Lair Devlog #1: A sexy barbarian takes on a sexy vampire in this point and click adventure!

Lilith's Lair is a greyscale point-and-click adventure game where your decisions will branch the story into many different strange and kinky scenarios!

The entire game is played with just the mouse. Each story branch will come with it's own unique set of minigames which are slow and can be played at your own pace, so laptop touchpad users need not worry about quick reaction times. I also plan for the game to be playable within browser, so hopefully non-windows users will have a shot at torturing our sexy barbarian protagonist as well!


Lilith's Lair is planned to be completed sometime in late 2024, though that's entirely tentative at this point. As of writing this Visca's Earth Conquest will take priority until it's completed, though I do have a good bit of Lilith's Lair already made, which I can share.

Visca's Earth Conquest Devlog #1: From ankle-biter to apocalypse, destroy and grow on your quest for total annihilation!

Visca's Earth Conquest is a 2d sidescroller where your primary objective is to destroy things of similar size to you, absorb their matter, and grow until you're large enough to lay waste to entire cities!

As you punch, stomp, and blast through human civilization, the authorities will begin to take notice and try to stop you. Just destroy them too, obviously! Can't be that hard! But even if you fail your attempts to conquer the earth (you will fail your attempts) you will continuously grow stronger with each run, and garnering ill-gotten gains to buy upgrades to suit your playstyle!

Think Katamari Damacy meets Rampage, but with a HOT BABE PROTAGONIST.


VEC is planned to be completed sometime in late 2023, though that's entirely tentative at this point.
