Sorry to bombard you with posts today.  This is the music video using existing assets I was talking about making a while back.  It turned out ok I think.

It's a one time thing I wanted to try, not a regular video idea.  I felt that as the song doesn't place Fernando in one place, it might be possible to make an interesting enough cartoon considering how many assets I have for him.  It's the same idea as the Captain Drake music videos (1 2).  I don't think this approach would work for the Perving at the Beach song because Fernando's at the beach and he's describing his actions and outfits and they're not things I've had him do before.

Another month has passed so I'd like to say thanks again everyone for supporting my terrible/beautiful/nice cartoons, and hello to new patrons!

Horse Person

I have been asked to post the audio for Horse Person.  I scrolled down the feed and realised I had only posted an older version of the track and it was buried in a post about something else, and that the track was too loud and distorted in places, so here is a fresh version in case anyone missed it and might like it.  

If I ever animate this, I'll tweak it in a couple of places and maybe re-record some of the lines as my pitch is off in places so I don't regard this as the ultimate finished version.  

I would like to animate this as I think painting luscious alien landscapes and horse aliens would be really cool, but to counter that I think it's the sort of thing I could get lost in and spend 2 months on it and I don't think it's worth that much effort, so if I do it it may have to be some kind of limited compromise style.  Maybe something like Calloused Hands.

Here's Fernando's latest collab track, made with the lyric suggestions from the second podcast episode.  Some darned good rhymes in here.  

Went for a minimalist techno kinda thing, I don't think that adding more layers to this will improve it.

I'm pretty tempted to animate this.  Nice length, appealing title/premise.  I'd have to animate Fernando in a pink thong though...

I am reasonably proud to bring you a new short, and my first parody for a long time (and probably my last for another long time).

It's an adaptation of this comic. I thought about animating the whole thing and even wrote more stuff that included Marge going back to Springfield and blowing away skeletons but the first two rows just seemed like such a nicely contained short.

I've got another podcast episode, a pointless show video and also I ended up going ahead with that milk song cartoon I was writing about (will take less than 2 days, already over half done).  But for my next proper cartoon I'm thinking of adapting this comic.   If you read it now it might somewhat spoil it, up to you, I'll just describe it as a heartwarming story about a boy trying to smuggle razor blades into school camp.

Current Project (s)

The still above is from "Bartpocalypse", my very first foray into the world of the Simpsons.  It's originally a comic collab, and when finished it will only be about 35 seconds long.  I'm aiming for a fusion of my style and the simpsons rather than a faithful Simpsons recreation.  It's so much faster drawing with just one outline colour and using vectors to colour everything (except the sky and clouds).  Colouring with that bright yellow is so noxious to me!

My other project is a music video for the Milk song heavily reusing existing assets.  The link is a mock-up for the first two lines (the colours are desaturated for some reason) .  I think it works, but I know I'll have to create at least some new elements for it later on.  I'm still wondering if I should do it at all.

Fernando's Amazing Podcast - Episode 2 - Milk

The first episode got a pretty good reaction, some people seemed to get into it, so here's episode 2.  

Episode 2 really tests a concept, because many who took a look at the first ep out of curiosity know that it's not for them.  I hope people keep engaging with it though because it's pretty fun to make, particularly the song collabs.

I said in my last post I was considering a music video for the Milk song collab that's in this.  For now I've gone off that idea.  I'm working on another cartoon kind of like Cat Arms but not really at all.  I'll post about it in a few days when I have some more to show.

Which brings me to the hot topic of today, I put my computer into sleep mode this morning and it wouldn't wake up.  I hard reset it and what do you know?  NTFS file system scrambled.  Curse you windows 10, this is actually the second time this has happened to me.  The first time was worse, it effectively wiped the hard drive.  This time it just corrupted the windows installation, and my cartoon .fla file that I had open.  But happily I can import the art I've done from the .swf and keep going, I only lost half an hour of work, but it took like 5 hours to go back to windows 7 and re-install everything.  Also I think I'm getting a cold so today sucks!   I'm back now, and apologies for the long whinge...

MILK!

This track is the collab from the first episode of Fernando's podcast.

It's got a bit of 90s hiphop to it, which is kind of daggy but I dunno,  I'm pretty happy with it.   

I'm thinking of making a music video for it along the lines of Space Walrus and Fill My Black Hole.   As in, reuse existing assets a fair bit, kind of a half assed aesthetic which hopefully serves to make it funny, and takes much less time to do than the Manwhore music videos.  

In other news, Cat Arms is doing well in it's first few days.  It's the first time I've made something that is explicitly cat relevant content that is actually substantial (and not a pile of shit like this).  People like cats!

There is a sequel comic to Cat Arms, I'd link to it but I can't remember what I called it.  It's pretty good but I'd need to come up with a beginning and a more satisfying ending before it's worthy of animating.

For now I'm working on the Fernando toon again (If you missed it, here's the first episode).  I have been trying to think of new comics to animate.  There are heaps of good ones, but finding ones with satisfying endings is the trick (Here's a good example).  Also some of them work in the comic format but might not translate well to animation.  I've always wanted to animate this one...but dare I?

Thanks for the feedback in my last couple of posts, this was an animated talk show idea but I realised it was better as a podcast.  

I uploaded a video asking for questions on my greasytales channel and holy smokes I got a lot of them.  I think the questions and the roleplaying sections that make up most of this are the strongest parts.

My House of Squid cartoon is almost done, I'll have that up in a few days.

Alternative content formats

I've been thinking a lot about alternative content formats recently, I wanted to share this first page of a comic I started in March last year.  This was an earlier version of the idea when the artifact Gooseman and Fernando are sent to search for is the "choke collar of eternal ecstasy", before I changed it to the "phallus of Glycon".  I'm wondering if I should reinvent this but in such a format as would work on youtube, something more like this.   But maybe without the narration, more of an illustrated radio play.

I can't imagine how else this story will be told, since it's so large (it would probably take me 18 months-2 years to animate).  I've sent the script to 4 different people that were in a position to fund it and no one's into it so I've kinda lost the motivation to keep pitching it around.

I've also been thinking of reviving this project. I stopped it because the art style took too damn long!  But it would be a shame if I never finished it.

Thanks to everyone who listened to the audio in my last post.  The feedback is that although it's a fun listen, it's probably not worth the time to animate.  Perhaps I'll just publish it as a short form pod cast.  If I do that I should remove the visual jokes I guess.  Does anyone like the show name Culture Pit?  My girlfriend doesn't like that name, she wants me to call it The Tonight Show with Fernando...we often dislike each other's ideas.  New suggestions are welcome.

Btw my House of Squid cartoon is coming along nicely.  I'll make my next post about it.

Audio for new show idea

This is the audio for a show idea I had a few nights ago.  It's a talk show hosted by Fernando and Gooseman from the deck of their trawler, the good ship Essence of Manwhore.

My idea for it is to animate it better than Pointless Show and Sweet Boy Beach, but not quite as well as the regular cartoons seeing as its so long.  Also I want to heavily use poses from previous cartoons to save time.  Obviously once one episode was done, subsequent ones would be much easier because their poses would be in place.

Fernando calls it The Greasytales show but I'm not satisfied with that name, another idea I had was The Fernanshow.  Anyone have any title ideas?

There's a few visual jokes that won't quite come across but I think most of it will make sense.  

I'm hoping to get some initial feedback.  Is this entertaining?  Would it make an interesting show do you think?

Let's do this!

The rule on youtube is that videos less than a minute in length won't or almost never get video ads.  As a result, almost all of my cartoons are over 1 minute in length.  

It occurred to me a few days ago that since ad revenue isn't a major factor anymore, the 1 minute rule is less relevant.  But also, with enough shorts I could make an animated sketch show.

I went back and rewatched most of my House of Squid cartoons, that is, cartoons that are based on comic jams drawn by my friends and I (we called our collaboration House of Squid for some reason).  I found that I really liked some of them and disliked others.  I had forgot about Dancebreak and Knife Dance, but I like both of them.  I hate Calcium Wrath, it's such a bad cartoon, and the one about Ray Romano is pretty bad as well.  I think my favourites are Meth Orcs and Revenge of the Manatees.

Also I was struck by how bad the ones are when I do too many voices.  This is probably obvious to everyone else but inside the bubble of subjectivity I'm in when I make them its not to me, or it's something I'm aware of but foolishly choose to think it doesn't matter.

So suddenly I feel like short cartoons have been unlocked for me as a prospect.  Mongoose Man (the guy I posted about last week) also fits in with this idea although his story is quite long.  I've started animating one of the oldest and best House of Squid comics.  I won't say which one yet but I'll post bits of it when it starts to come together.

Space Adventure Legend Quest Music

A new patron asked me for the SALQ sound track.   It's not part of the music packs because I don't believe I'm supposed to give it out to anyone.  But I think at this point, 5 years later, no one is likely to care.

Character concepts

I sent a loose pitch of sorts for a Mongoose Man show to a guy who asked me for some ideas recently, and I drew the above image to go along with it.

 Mongoose Man is the world's newest superhero.  He teams up with an abusive nurse to fight crime.  It's kinda like One Punch Man in that it's a skewed take on superheroes but it's more like if the heroes and villains are just weirdos with too much time on their hand and powers that aren't all that special.  I haven't decided yet whether there are monsters or whether they just fight eccentric villains.

I also scanned some drawings from my sketchbook, in which I draw very infrequently:

Fernando and the Orb of Gaia poster concept  - Still want to make this cartoon!  The witch with the  badly drawn face is not in the original story.

Fernandad  - (Real name Giuseppe) Plays a prominent part in the Phallus of Glycon story.

Huge gimp  - Has a brutal fight with Randy at one point in Phallus of Glycon.

Ideas for funding goals

Fernando's adventure continues.  Next he will lock horns with a gang of psychic bald Peruvian dogs.  BUT unlike the comic, he won't kill them all with his spear.  It never quite fit with his character that he would just kill a bunch of dogs that opposed him. 

Generally, the second half of the comic has so much cool stuff in it and I'm looking forward to animating it!

I thought I'd post some ideas I had about potential new funding goals:

$3500 - Any additional income over $3500 I will spend on animation assistance.  So if say $4300 is pledged I will pay someone $700 to animate on the project, which means I can produce things quicker.  I'm hoping this will convince new people that their pledges will have a positive impact.

$4500 - If this goal is reached, I turn all ads off the videos.  This is largely symbolic as there's no longer a significant amount of ads on the cartoons anyway but it would be nice to be secure enough to give youtube the finger.

My facetious $3000 goal about pissing in the ocean would go back to being the $5000 goal.

I was also thinking of abolishing the patron vote.  I could still do them occasionally but I don't think I do them often enough for it to be a significant drawcard.  

Anyone think this is a great/really bad plan?

Almost...there...

Hello!

I want to make a small post to say I am sorry and regret that I have not finished this gosh darned cartoon yet, I intended to spend no more than 3 weeks on it, this being a reasonable time for a 1:20 music video.  But here we are, tomorrow will be a month since the day I started.  

It is a case of me painting backgrounds when I could use vectors, adding in betweens to improve the movement of things that at animatic stage I assumed I would tween....that sort of thing.

But it's looking good at least!  And I still like the song.  Usually after a month I am hating the thing I am working on but not this time.  I will have it done in 2 days!

Spoon Dominator (plus new song)

Now you may see the gif and wonder what does a man dominating a spoon coated in an unidentified white substance have to do with Tobey Maguire?  Oh ho ho the rabbit hole runs deep on this one.  All shall be revealed...if you didn't listen to the song already, in which case all has already been revealed.  

This is the first piece of rotoscoping I've done in like 10 years, I thought it might have an interesting gross out-fusion effect, we'll see if it works.

All the main assets are done, as you can see I've made a good start on the animation, I have left a few unfinished backgrounds in my wake sadly so that's what I'll be doing voraciously over the next few days.  I have spent longer on Tobeytoon than I thought I would but I do feel it's worth it, I think it will be one of my better music videos.

I have a new song for you as well - it's called Space Winnebago at the moment but if anyone has some suggestions for a more interesting title please share them with me.

Does anyone think this would be worth a cartoon some time?  Given it's length I was thinking maybe a shortened version might be more achievable.  Perhaps without the last two verses, or without the ice cream verse in the middle.

Tobey cartoon is coming along nicely, I've got most of the assets and backgrounds done, have done some animation too.  It feels really nice working on something short with no sound design and very little lip syncing after a big project like the Fernando toon.  (Btw here's another link to the Fernando toon  from earlier this month if anyone missed it, it's for patrons only for now.)  

I started another collab track , it's going to be a bit longer and denser than the others but it started strongly I think.

The youtube ad revenue situation hasn't improved, and I'm wondering what incentive youtube has to put it back to the way it was.  I have heard murmurings from other channels who have been severely affected, but also some ideas for what to do about it.  I'm hoping to have something positive to talk about in the next month on this topic (that's incredibly vague but that is all to be said at this point).

Finally!....any Berserk fans here?  This is my contribution to a compilation a friend of mine is putting together called "Bartzerk": Large version  and Small version.

Gifmaster

I think you can see in the above gif I've got some half decent Tobey going for the front on perspective, but I'm struggling to get a likeness for any other angle.  I've got another profile Tobey that doesn't really resemble him.  

I just realised that I titled the  soundtrack and mp4 patron posts I made about the Phallus in the Sky cartoon "Phallus of Glycon".  I've corrected it now, if anyone was confused, "Phallus of Glycon" is my half hour Pleasure Island odyssey in which Fernando saves the Pleasure Island Resort and finally meets his father, and yes Glycon is in it too.  I will animate it one day but that day has not yet come!  I usually publish around midnight so that is my excuse.

Anyone here follow David O'reilly?  I haven't tried his games but I enjoyed two of his earlier films very much.  I read this article this morning  in which he makes some pretty depressing comments about animation.  In my experience yes people are out to exploit me but I usually suss out and say no to these people.  I am surprised someone at his level experienced this.   

Next Project + New tune

My next project is a cartoon to accompany this song  I made recently which was the result of a fresh collab.  The gif above is meant to portray "reoccuring dream".  It was a nice challenge getting all the dudes to hook up (a sentence i'm unlikely to write ever again).

I drew my first proper Tobey today, struggled a bit with the likeness but I think I will achieve a good Tobey before long.  

Also!  I have a new tune to share called Pool Man.  After the third one failed, I needed a break, but as you can probably tell, I am enjoying doing the song collabs again.   Not sure if this one should be animated.  For one I'm pretty bad at animating liquids...but then maybe that's a good reason to do it?  

I know I should probably just get stuck into the next Fernando episode but honestly the last one was pretty brutal and I would relish a short music video break.  I don't intend to spend a huge amount of time on it.
