2016-04-18 14:08:02 +0000 UTC View PostHey guys, not much in the way of interesting compositions in Meth Orcs - just mood. This is the first time I've used metal guitar in something. My next project will contain copious moaning, I promise!
No-ad version: https://youtu.be/9k3_UxWjQMg
Public version on my channel if you want to share it: https://youtu.be/s_CbMMZ0WgQ
Meth Orcs is based on a comic my friends and I drew back in 2012: http://greasymoose.com/houseofsquid/152.html
The cartoon follows the comic pretty closely, except for the large scene in the middle. Ever since we drew the comic, I wanted to animate it, but I only recently came up with the middle part that expands it and made it click as a project for me. I really enjoyed animating a fantasy setting, but also the fact that it is short and sweet, not a sweeping epic (It took me a whole week to paint the backgrounds, I think I'd expire if I had to paint any more).
I hope you like it!
My next project is a Manwhore Industries standalone story. It will involve moaning and an open mic night.

Look at him go! (gif)
Not much substance to this update. Meth Orcs about 60% completed. Animating the most fun part today (a fight scene).

And I haven't even gone too far with the weird scarring, random limb accoutrements and other wacky stuff you can do with orcs. It may not look it but I tried to keep these guys relatively simple. I should do more fantasy stuff!
Recently I've been trying to write a simple pitch document for sending to a network, with the view to make a longer form Pleasure Island show. I thought I'd share my one line synopsis because I'm quite proud of it:
An aging gigolo and a sociopathic hustler must save a remote island resort from a bloodthirsty cult of gimps.
I mean, who wouldn't want to watch that, right?
I'm writing it mostly for fun I guess, I can't imagine anyone would fund something like this.

As soon as we drew the Meth Orcs comic (back in '12 I think), I knew it was great material for a cartoon. But it was always missing something (without additional material it would only be 30-40 seconds long). I tried writing new parts for it on two separate occasions but it was only last week that I took another look at it and came up with a new section that makes the project click for me.
Like with Let's go Clubbing! the cartoon will depart from the comic significantly, but if you choose to read it, it will spoil some of the jokes. Here it is if you're curious:
Already I'm enjoying the fantasy setting. I haven't done a fantasy thing since Great Destiny Man 2 back in 2011. That project was too big a mouthful at that time and it put me off doing fantasy for a while (all those armour and weapons to draw, but also it was super long). Also it's cool making something with no human characters, haven't done that for a while either.
After I finished Let's go Clubbing! I started a comic project in order to take a few days off animating. And just see if I liked it. I've always wanted to do an epic adventure comic, because it would allow me to tell a much larger story than I am capable of animating. But after a short time I felt refreshed enough to start a new cartoon, and I doubt I'll keep working on it. Here's the page.

Wooooo!
I really thought this would take me about 4 weeks to make. Instead it was 5+ weeks. Yay! MMrrrnnnggghhhh.... Anyway, I think it's pretty cool, I wanted to animate a story where the conflict is completely absurd drama, kind of like a 2 minute techno opera, with the disparate threads weaving together. My favourite part ended up being the flashback.
It is based on these two comics I drew with my friends:
http://www.greasymoose.com/houseofsquid/89.html
http://www.greasymoose.com/houseofsquid/106.html
As you will see if you read the comics, the cartoon leaves a lot out and goes in different directions. It was fun molding the raw material in the comic into something new.
Thanks for helping me make this cartoon. I feel like it really stretched me... kinda like passing a gall stone stretches you...but in a good way!

Picture a snake slowly eating a deer. That's me with this cartoon (the snake, not the deer). I assumed because the cartoon is only 1:40 long I could load it up with animation and still get it done in a month or so but that's looking unlikely.
I've got most of the voices in the timeline, although some need to be re-recorded. I've started working on the backgrounds, and it's coming together in places. When it's done it will be a nice showcase piece because it's so short and dense.

Sorry for the lack of updates in the past two weeks. I took a work break from Let's Go Clubbing! to make this beauty for Vanossgaming. I'm back on it now and ploughing through the character assets. I won't have it done this month unfortunately.

Let's Go Clubbing! is coming along nicely. Here's some raver ladies I've been working on.
I'd also like to share this amazing gentleman, who is performing the lawnmower dance manoeuvre. Both of these are swfs so might not work on phones. Hopefully most of you can see them.
I'd like to say hello and welcome to new patrons. Thanks for signing up!
The posts have been buried somewhat so here is the base $5 perk and $10 perk for anyone who has missed them and actually wants them.
Raw Latex 3 has been received really well and is still getting lots of views (for one of my cartoons that isn't some kind of direct parody). This pleases me greatly. Thanks again for supporting it!
Finally I'd like to share a story that happened recently. I was approached by a media organisation that I probably shouldn't name who asked me if I had any ideas for web series so I told them about Manwhore Industries. They were really enthusiastic about it, and were talking about commissioning 45 minutes or 1 hour of it in some kind of episodic form. The budget would have been big too, by my standards anyway, and they didn't want to own the characters and the IP, just the cartoons, which was fine by me. So then they thought about it for a month and decided against it on the grounds that it is "too male for their mandate". Alas! They had me going for a bit there...
That's all the Sexualobster related news a single person could possibly consume or want in any context so I'll end this here. Cheers, guys.

Here's the public version of Raw Latex 3.
If you like it enough to share it, please share this version. Thanks!
This is the last time I'll be doing a one week delay between patreon/vessel version and youtube/public version. Cause basically, it's a pain in the neck.
Also, here's a clip
from my new one, Let's Go Clubbing! (it's a swf so it needs flash player to play).

If you have the time and the inclination, I suggest re-watching the first two episodes since it's been 2 years:
Thanks again for supporting a cartoon of mine!
My next cartoon will be Let's Go Clubbing!
Here's a rough concept for the characters.
It's gonna have some frenetic raver dancing and some slick beats. And a chess match.
P.S. This is the last cartoon which I'll upload on Vessel first for a week. Next time it'll go up on YT at the same time as here. So if you do like the cartoon and want to share it (and I hope you do), please wait until it goes up publicly in a week's time. The whole vessel thing was a bit of a drag tbh.

Hey guys thought I'd get in early and say happy new year!
2015 was was an ok year for Sexualobster's cartoon laboratory. No staff died and damage to the building was kept to a minimum.
Raw Latex 3 is chugging along. I'm over half way, and parts of it are starting to look good, though others are a bit flat and need work. But overall it is shaping up well.
Looking back over my three patreon projects thus far, I am generally happy with my efforts but I feel like there's room for improvement artistically and strategically.
- Piccolo: Attorney at Law. I'm 95% happy with this visually, although I feel like some of the jokes were not executed well, or were just funnier to me on paper (the plot must seem pretty weird to people who haven't seen the first one). Overall the first DBZ parody I made in 2013 was funnier, but I'm still ok with this one .
- Sweet Sweet Goo. I'm really happy with how this one came out. With the benefit of hindsight, some of the shots could have been executed a bit better and the sound could have used a bit more work. But overall, 9 crabs out of 10?
- Pleasure Island 5. I'm happy with this one visually. Because it is shorter than the other two, I was able to include some nice FBF animation, and I tried to be more ambitious with painted backgrounds, which has always been a weakness. Unfortunately this cartoon is quite inaccessible to new people, and it feels incomplete since there's still the last one to make. Not as many people have watched it as I'd like, but hey, that's what you get when you revive an old series that most people don't remember or haven't seen.
Generally, the fact that I'm making long projects means my character animation is stretched pretty thin. As I mentioned in my last post, in 2016 I'd like to make cartoons that are shorter but denser, with a focus on improving my character animation and background art. Raw Latex 3 will be just under 4 minutes long, but the next few after that will probably be more like 1:30 - 2 minutes long.
Having continued 4 different series (well kinda, if you consider Sweet Sweet Goo an extension of Manwhore Industries), I'd like to work on some standalone projects. The # of views of my cartoons has decreased in the past few months, so I'd like to make some more accessible things that can bring some new people in.
Thanks for your support this year, see you in 2016!

Hey guys, it's been a while since my last sweet update. My holiday was awesome and I'm back on Raw Latex 3, which sadly is only around 25% complete (its a bit of a doozy).
I mentioned before I was considering animating my friends and my D&D adventures but I've reconsidered as even just the first episode would be quite an epic project and I've learned that I have to be more careful when I casually start series without knowing how I will end them. Maybe I should wait until we get further into our campaign and reconsider then!
No, I think after Raw Latex 3 I'd like to try some projects which are perhaps less vast in scope but have denser animation, less talking, more FBF, perhaps some music videos.
Some of you might have noticed that the total pledge amount on my patreon page has decreased significantly. You will probably see this on most pages, this is because patreon now displays an approximation of what the creator actually receives after patreon take their 5% and take into consideration finance fees and dud pledges (which are sadly quite significant for most creators it seems). In case you didn't know.
That's all the substance I have for this update, have a happy holiday (if you have one coming up). I will try to, but tbh I find xmas is a pain in the dick and its usually way too hot.

Hey, PI5 is up on youtube in case you feel it's good enough to watch TWICE.
This is a quick note to let you know that my next project is the cartoon voted #2 in the poll, Raw Latex 3!
So far it feels fresh to come back to these characters. I will admit I felt a little deflated after making the second one, as people did not respond as well to the darker story. The material Jon has written for the last episodes is solid and funny.
As I mentioned in the last post, I'm going on holiday, so RL3 won't be completed for a while.
After RL3, I'm *probably* going to make a fantasy cartoon based on some adventures my friends and I have been having playing Dungeons & Dragons. So, all new characters and settings! I might change my mind, but that's what feels most likely right now.
Hey, super patrons. Here's an HQ MP4 of Pleasure Island if such is your desire!

*edit* I see that Patreon is embedding the vimeo video here, but for me at least, it is missing the option to watch it in HD. You can see the HD if you click through to the vimeo page.
Sorry for the lack of updates recently. It got to a point in the cartoon where everything I thought might be nice to share contained a minor spoiler of some kind so I ended up not posting anything.
I also regret that it took so long to animate, but I think you will see where the time went when you watch it. I did also spend a few weeks of the last 2 months working on commissions, and my hard drive died at one point so I had to redo some stuff (uggghhhh). I think all up something like 250-300 hours went into this bad boy.
I HOPE you guys won't be disappointed by the lack of payoff at the end. This is the penultimate episode! Pleasure Island 6 will answer your questions (and raise even more), and it will finish the story.
I'm going away for a month in a few weeks time, so I'm afraid there will be quite a gap between now and the next project (It will be either Raw Latex 3 or a music video, I'll think about it over the next few days).
Thanks for sticking with being my patron through the long production times and the patreon hack, and to the new people, hello and welcome!

First of all, here's a gif (5 mb, might take a while to load)
I don't seem to have a knack for gif making, it plays a bit too fast, and I don't know how to remove the jolting black frame when it repeats.
Anyway...It's still coming! The assets phase took me longer than I thought it would. The animation phase probably will as well, such is the way of these things. I'm about to get to the walrus pit, where things will (spoiler alert) get somewhat emotional.
I don't really have an ETA, I usually blow right past them so I'm trying not to think about dates too much with this one. It's coming together nicely.
Here's a short new version of the Pleasure Island 3 & 4 theme. I haven't decided whether I'll use it, expand it or drop it yet. It sounds way better slowed down than at the pitch I made it at.
2015-09-29 12:20:33 +0000 UTC View Post
Pleasure Island 5 is coming along nicely, I'm midway through making the assets, about 70% of the voices are in.
It's weird to come back to a series the last installment of which was 3 years ago. But I think that's probably one of the interesting things about it, each episode looks significantly different to the one before because my art style changes through the years.
This is the penultimate Pleasure Island, one more episode will be needed to give this series the welcome death it deserves. This time I don't think I'll wait 3 years!
I did put this aside briefly to make a cartoon for VanossGaming, which came out yesterday. Vanoss has one of the biggest channels in the world and both of the cartoons I've made for him have lead to a flush of new viewers of my cartoons, which is a nice change.
*edit* I forgot to mention that the $3000 milestone has been surpassed! This is due to a single patron who raised his pledge in exchange for a small thing that I made for him. So it will go back down after Pleasure Island is released. But the $3000 target is largely arbitrary anyway, anything around that level far exceeds my expectations at the time of setting patreon up!

I've put around 180-200 hours of work into this cartoon so far. The first 3 and a half minutes look good and are almost there, the last 60 seconds...not so much. I've given up guessing how long it will take me, but I'm resisting the powerful urge to cut corners, so far successfully. I know I make some crap occasionally, but I'm confident this will be the best thing I've made this year when it's done, and I think if you liked the very first things I made back in 2005-2006, you will find something to like about this one.

Greetings! Updates have been few and far between recently.
First, I forgot to link to the poll in my last update so if you haven't voted yet and you have an interest in doing so here's a link: http://www.easypolls.net/poll.html?p=557b9c02e4b045ff871da1e4
Not naming names but if the current #1 voted film stays in first place, I actually need two episodes to finish the series off and I'm contemplating just doing them back to back.
The awful truth is that in the month since I've uploaded Piccolo: Attorney at Law I've spent 2 weeks working on commissions. If you're curious, the first one can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3w2bKrt0zOo The second one should be appearing on the channel "Vanossgaming" some time in the next few days.
So Sweet Sweet Goo is more or less where it was 2 weeks ago but I'm back on it again now. It is quite large, it might take me another 3 weeks to make, assuming no other projects come up.
Incidentally, I am very glad I had your support for Piccolo: Attorney at Law because 2 days after uploading it I happened to leave my Youtube ad network. Youtube combed over my videos and decided to ban the Piccolo cartoon from monetization. I think its because I made covers of two of the tracks from the DBZ sound track but I'm not sure, they are pretty thin on the details.
So that happened! Serves me right for making a parody I guess. No more of those for a while.
