We've been mostly exposed to Luffy, and recently pirates have been people like Ace, Whitebeard and his entire crew who all seem to be generally good people. But this is what I mean by what most people experience with pirates, evil scumbags that will take advantage and hold you hostage like Big Mam. This is why a lot of people actually prefer the navy and World Gorvernment, not only do they help them against pirates, but most people don't know about their illegal activities or see it up close, and those that do still view it as a less harmful evil than all the atrocities commited litreally all over the world by pirates every day. So it's actually really gray area in my opinion, I don't fault anyone who knowingly sides with the WG nor do I fault people who knowingly side with pirates in general.
