Timothy Olyphant tells a great story about the only reason he did the Hitman movie was because he bought a house after season 3 thinking Deadwood would go for 4 seasons and maybe even more and then it got canceled lolol

Deadwood got canceled after season 3 was already filmed and post-production finished. Everyone on the cast and crew thought there was going to be a season 4. However, because of the high production costs and low viewership ratings HBO wanted to do a 6 episode season. David Milch (the creator) pushed back on this because a 6 episode season would drastically alter the plot line as each episode takes place over the course of one day and he didn't want the cast and crew to lose out on a full season's pay. This dispute got leaked to the press somehow and HBO got butthurt so they announced the show was canceled. There was always talk that David and HBO agreed to make a movie to wrap things up but as the years went on it remained stuck in development with no real progress. Then, finally, after 13 years of waiting patiently we finally got the promised movie to really drive home the truth of "better late than never."
