Winter Solstice 2023 Cultivar Cup Results PLUS Live Zoom Call with GordoTEK tonight (Dec 20)

The Cultivar Cup results have just been published, and Doma (MagicMyco) has a zoom call scheduled for TONIGHT (December 20, 2023) with a live panel consisting of himself and any sponsors that want to participate. I will be participating in this zoom meeting, so its the perfect chance for anyone to ask questions live. I'll stay on for as long as there are questions. You can ask about testing, HPLC, any and all aspects of growing, the science, laminar flow hoods, agar, microscopy, the user experience, set and setting, or anything else you can think of. The Zoom call is limited to 100 people but will be recorded at least in case you can't get on. The Cultivar Cup Zoom Panel Free Live event! December 20th, 10 pm EST (7 pm Pacific) [Update: recording is here]

You can see the Winter '23 Cultivar Cup data directly (Excel) here:

It looks like a LOT of entries this time around failed the Yeast & Mold testing. I'm still not sure how legit that test is, but at the same time I think its probably a good idea that your dried fruit bodies are pure and clean and probably should not be failing this test. Myco's results site includes pictures of every entry and you can even see that some of the entries that failed don't look super clean. I highly recommend you thoroughly clean your grow room and tent (if using one) before starting every grow. You can use bleach diluted with water to scrub down all surfaces. Also make sure you have adequate ventilation and fresh air in your grow area. I have visited massive commercial mushroom grow facilities, and they bleach like crazy, cleaning before every grow (here's the actual location where Pizza Hut gets all of their mushrooms from):

Anyway, regarding the Cup results, there were 62 total entries, the highest PCBE (psilocybin equivalent) entry was once again, TTBVI (pan cyan) coming in at 3.89% (Do Boy), 2nd and 3rd were also TTBVI (Psyched Medicinals) at 3.7% and 3.74%. But the highest PCBE that passed Y&M test was, drum roll, also TTBVI at 3.25% (Explore Spores).

This marks the SIXTH consecutive win by TTBVI in testing events. Three time 1st Place Winner of the Cultivar Cup, 1st in the Island Cup, 1st in the Entheo Cup (Michigan), and 1st in the Psychedelic Cup (Denver).  As usual, if any patron wants a free spore print of these "most potent genetics on the known planet" just send me a private message.  Also if you want to know where these genetics came from I wrote up the story in this post.

I submitted a natalensis sample to this latest Cultivar Cup which came in at 0.89% PCBE, but also of note, it was high in minor alkaloids at 0.63% which may prove significant especially when you consider the ratio of minor alkaloids to PCBE. I keep mentioning this species because I think it's special and I will publish a video about it soon. What makes it special is the remarkably positive user experience reports. One often cited attribute is "euphoria" especially at lower doses. Is this legit or just a silly collection of unreliable anecdotes? Only time will tell, I hope that science can answer this question one day, and I will do my part to make that happen. In the meantime, if any patron wants a free natalensis spore print, just let me know via private message here on patreon.

The most potent Cubensis mushroom came in at a pretty impressive 2.42% (RC Enigma submitted by Explore Spores). Close behind at 2.31% was APE Blues Traveler submitted by "Capital Shrommery DMRG"

And here's a pretty amazing last minute surprise - the winner of this Cultivar Cup is getting a free vacation to Coral Cove Wellness Retreat in Jamaica plus a cash prize to cover airfare. I don't know much about this place, but they offer guided psilocybin experiences, it has great reviews on tripadvisor and the location and amenities look amazing!

Maybe Coral Cove would want to host a "GordoTEK Retreat"??  😊  That would be fun.

Merry Christmas everyone!

-Gordo

I love how when I shop for a 8" duct fan, it offers me "Surgical Grade Blades #11 10pcs Sterile with #3 Scalpel Knife", LOL!

DRS

I also increased my membership to 5. Don't spend it on something fun. 😂 If you get enough of us u very much can do well. I plugged you a few times .

Thomas Filion

Successfully got agar transfer to grains and taking off. Thank you.

Thomas Filion

Hello, I just wanted to say as a casual software engineer with a biology background, unfinished degree, I really appreciate your work, post, and the use of language in your posts. With so much fluffy marketing out there it's hard to be encouraged to explore what to grow. Seeing evidence based data and analysis really helps. Thanks!

Stephen Nguyen

I'm new to this and never done it before

Dumbshroom

I would like to know how do I get to free Spore print

Dumbshroom

Can you dm me Idk how to dm people on here.

tido money

Thanks, appreciate that.

GordoTEK

Yea, I updated the post with a link. There wasn't as much time for interaction and Q&A as I had hoped. Maybe have to do another one sometime.

GordoTEK

I believe he uses 3M Petrifilm Yeast and Mold Count Plates to do this so yes you should be able to check it yourself at home. There is still debate about what results from this test are acceptable and I would love to know what the test looks like from say produce bought from a grocery store for comparison purposes. The cannabis industry uses the same test but allows 10x the counts compared to Doma's cut off, if that was the standard then no samples in the cup would have failed.

GordoTEK

Hello, Gordotek! Thank you for the spore samples and the kind notes as well. I increased my tier membership to the $5.00 a month, but my paypal account doesn't show any payments to patreon. I can't remember what payment method that I'm using. I'm going to have to look at that-- I'm a little forgetful. Any way, thanks for the spores and the nice notes that you mailed.

WINFIELD SCOTT BRACKEEN

Super fun listening to the recording. I think I will submit something next time. :-)

Brian Place

I am 100 percent ready for a Gordo retreat lol

Chad Fox

Congrats on the Exotics AND Cubensis wins Explore Spores!! Thank magic myco for the cup, GordoTek for the spores, and everyone who sent in a sample! I got Silver overall alkaloid content and I passed the Yeast and mold test. I would have easily not been top 3 if it weren’t for the yeast and mold test. For this sample I used a 1st flush harvest, dried it at 120f for 6 hours, and vac sealed the sample with a desiccant pack before sending it in.

MycoToad

i wasn’t able to make it to the call, any chance the recording will be available?

Scott

Hey Gordo, yes they were pretty close. TTBVI #1 sample from altitude total was 4.147 compared to 4.21 from doma. TTBVI #2 sample from altitude total was 4.503 compared to 4.25 from doma. Not sure if the way the calculate the total is the same. The other psilocybin and other alkaloids were comparable. Also, I just reached out to altitude and I misspoke, I thought they included the y & m test but it's extra (I thought it was included and just assumed). Sorry about that assumption. BTW, were there any test results that were released showing the y & m results? Any documentation?

Aaron Fountain

I didn't even know those guys (Altitude) do a Y&M test. But now I'm also curious, how did the Altitude HPLC results compare to the Cultivar Cup result? Hopefully they were pretty close.

GordoTEK

Hi Aaron, were the altitude test results pretty close to magic myco's (other than yeast and mold)?

orinaugie

Hey do boy and Gordo, appreciate your comments and insights. Both my samples (psyched medicinals) failed the mold test. Not sure how I failed this as well as always practice sterile techniques and even got my samples tested at altitude consulting before I submitted to cultivar and they passed. It does seem strange that so many samples failed the yeast and mold test, especially from experieninced growers, but anything can happen to anyone. Looking forward to discussing tonight!

Aaron Fountain

Thanks Gordo for the insights! I submitted the 2 TTBVI samples (Psyched Medicinals) and they both failed the mold test in this cup. Curious to hear about the yeast and mold tests. I had both of my samples tested at altitude consulting before I submitted them to the cultivar cup and passed the yeast and mold test. Thanks again for everything you do!!

Aaron Fountain

Haha right on! As I’m harvesting Jamaican cyans at the moment lol 🤘🏼🍄 coincidentally

The Beehive Ashram

I'll have to let them know in advance, "we don't do cubes" ;)

GordoTEK

Yea we should discuss this more tonight. I HOPE that Doma is doing all steps from opening the packaging to applying the fruit material to the Y&M tests completely in front of a verified working and properly tuned laminar flow box, otherwise, how would we know if the Y&M came with the material sent, or from the lab itself? It almost seems suspicous that so many different entries from different people failed the Y&M test.

GordoTEK

Yes!!! A Gordo Retreat is in order!!

The Beehive Ashram

Gordo you're the real winner. I feel like I've seen your name all over the place when it comes to researching these species. Keep up the good work.

Tom Eaton

Thanks for the writeup Gordo! I was surprised also to see my nats fail the yeast/mold test. Or anyway it never occurred to me that they might, didn't see anything funky in any of the fruits from that grow. Wonder if something might have developed after they were dried (insufficiently?) and vacuum sealed. Also wonder how I might test for that at home ahead of time. In any case, fun to take part!

orinaugie

Thanks once again for your summary and analysis of the results Gordo. I'm glad that you addressed the yeast/mold analysis because I've been wondering how in the heck I could have failed that. My P Nats were grown in Pacific Substrate all-in-one grow bags (which were sent to me from winning the last cup). They were the first fruits to come up and grown in a brand new tent, just to keep temperatures up around 75 degrees. They were dried immediately afterwards. For the TTBVI, the only difference from the entry of the last cup (Summer Solstice) was that rather than heating the entire room, I used a small conduction Heater at the bottom rather which provided sufficient FAE. So I disabled the computer fan at the top of the tent. But the hole for the computer fan still allows for ventilation moving outward from the top of the tent when the heater kicks in. I suppose the substrate was also different, once again I used a substrate that was sent from winning the previous cup, "Willy's Blend" from Brown Treasure Substrates. For the TTBVI, entry was submitted from my first two flushes; and I didn't notice any kind of visible mold on the fruits or in the casing layer. The tent was thoroughly cleaned and wiped down, shelves and entire canopy, however with isopropyl 70% and not with dilute bleach solution. I've been monitoring the reaults as they come in and was very surprised when I saw the yeast/mold analysis come in on Monday evening. I appreciate Doma's attitude and that continues doing the cup. It must be a lot of work. Thanks for the inspiration Gordo. See you guys in the panel tonight.

Do Boy

The sample I submitted of TTBVI were the last fruits of my 4th and final flush for that particular tent. I didn't notice any mold contamination but I'd imagine it's possible. I would have used my earlier flushes for the analysis but had already homogenized each previous flush and was unclear on the expectation of whole, dried fruits. Live and learn. My P. Nats faired well but they were grown in a tub.

Jonathan Smith

TTBVI once again! STILL Killin it! Ahooooooo
