Growing up with Mexican slang in Texas, “maricón” is the insult for gay. I was under the impression that it literally meant fairy. But has the weight of the f word for gay. “Mariposa” means butterfly. I have to say them both in my head to make sure I’m not using the slur.

Vergüenza can be used but with a specific conjugation. With the example of pushing someone down the stairs and feeling shame afterwards one would say “Me siento avergonzado de mi mismo” which is more in line with “I am ashamed of myself”. Tying it to yourself by conjugating “verguenza” as “avergonzado/avergonzada” and potentially adding “de mi mismo” makes it like that inward experience of shame that is different from being embarrassed.
