My Experience With UnitedHealthcare

Comments

I just left my health insurance job after 13 years and your speculations are correct. I’ll never forget the most heartbreaking calls were from MH providers calling in asking where their reimbursement is and having to tell them they had denied claims for reasons that should not be put on the provider. I have so much more to say on the topic and how I tried to fix it from the inside, but overall it’s a broken, competitive, money hungry system that needs to be looked into more.

Dr. Honda, thank you so much for telling it like it is.

I'm so thankful you shared your experience. When you were talking about having your own company and how you've structured it to help people and then make money so you can help more people, you described what true wealth is. The Man wants us to think wealth means having money and status, but really wealth means is being at peace. So, congratulations! You're winning at life. On another note, I wonder if Brain Thompson ever thought he would die alone on the cold streets of NYC like so many people do because they don't have the resources they need. It's an irony for sure... I guess all that scheming and denying and planning on gaining more money didn't get him what he thought he wanted. I'm truly sorry for him and others that waste their time in this experience on these types of ventures. Money and status will never bring a full heart and that it something Brain Thompson can never know... 💔

Here in Canada, post secondary institutions have been exploiting international students to explode profits and expansion. I recently saw an school's president on tvo public broadcasting, complaining about the freeze on international students - when I checked his salary on the "sunshine list" it had grown rapidly and steadily. The motto is, "If it ain't broke don't fix it", "or break it, profit, and cry about it when people notice it's broken" and start to notice how you've been benefiting.

It's so outrageous how we are indoctrinated to think people don't deserve health and food and shelter no matter what their financial situation is. Meanwhile people making more money that they could possibly spend.

The state of affairs with corporate greed makes me so mad and sick to think about. Especially related to healthcare 😤

Terrible act but glad to see Americans use their guns for something else than school shooting.

Amen Kirk, thank you. For further reading and elaboration I highly recommend the book Let Them Eat Tweets: How the Right Rules in An Age of Inequality by Hacker and Pierson.

What can we do? We the people (and lawmakers) need to prioritize the care and wellbeing of everyone over corporate profits. Would universal healthcare work better in the US if everyone got Tricare? Maybe… but I don’t have faith it would. I don’t think our leaders have the right values/ethics to even get universal healthcare right in the US. I see daily how Tricare functions (government run healthcare), and it’s not run very well. If you ever want to talk about the nuances of Tricare I’d be happy to have a chat.

Wow so this sounds JUST like what I deal with having Tricare. I completely agree with everything you are saying, but even a non-corporate health insurance company uses these horrible tactics. For those who don’t know: Tricare is the healthcare for military service members, family members, and retired military personnel use for insurance. They do a great job at covering procedures if and only if you follow an exact procedure that is always changing. If you are on a military base at a military hospital, it’s super easy to get covered. Once you enter the civilian world-it gets so much more difficult. I have spent so many hours ensuring the right referrals and preauthorizations are submitted, and insurance is billed correctly. The system is so difficult that MANY just give up and don’t get the care they need. Another CRAZY example is the use of GLP-1 for weight loss to be covered by Tricare. Before they will cover GLP-1s for weight loss, you have to take one of two other weight loss medications (both that will increase suicidal ideation). So instead of offering retired military veterans who may need help with weight loss, let’s give them a medication that may make them suicidal before giving them the one that doesn’t have that side effect. Isn’t it crazy they can make that decision and force people to take other medications before covering something else?

Last week I saw an article on a major news site bemoaning that so many Americans were being callous about this man's murder. And right next to it was an article about another insurance company limiting the time they would pay for anesthesia during surgeries. Gee, I wonder why people are fed up?
