I wonder if they controlled for actual depression as opposed to an average range of “moods” among non-depressed folks. It feels like wishful thinking. Everyone I know who hasn’t experienced chronic depression believes so hard that this is true and that if only depressed folks just pulled up their bootstraps and did these simple things, they are the magic solution to all depression. I have found I can only DO those things if I am NOT in a real depressed state to begin with which adds to what I would say is kind of a memory fallacy here. I believe those activities can elevate an already reasonable mood but can’t touch a low one which is probably why the study comes out feeling weird like that.
