Added 2024-10-25 15:40:13 +0000 UTCThe first thing he did when he got back down was use his sacrilege to block the gods of the world from his thought, trading whatever they may have wanted to say for a host of notifications.
<THE GOD MYRIAD WANTS PERMISSION TO VIEW YOUR THOUGHTS AND SPEAK IN YOUR MIND. ALLOW?>
<THE GOD ANAILIA WANTS PERMISSION TO VIEW YOUR THOUGHTS AND SPEAK IN YOUR MIND. ALLOW?>
<THE GOD HELORI WANTS PERMISSION TO VIEW YOUR THOUGHTS AND SPEAK IN YOUR MIND. ALLOW?>
<THE GOD NARE WANTS PERMISSION TO VIEW YOUR THOUGHTS AND SPEAK IN YOUR MIND. ALLOW?>
<THE GOD PHIXTH WANTS PERMISSION TO VIEW YOUR THOUGHTS AND SPEAK IN YOUR MIND. ALLOW?>
Deny all.
He wasn’t in the mood to hear from anyone, be they the gods he liked or not. Since coming back he’d worked so hard to help the world. From his mana bracelets he’d made to the buffing ones he was in the middle of testing, to the materializers he’d perfected and his current experiments to enhance a person's attributes but all of that still wasn’t enough. So many of the gods of the world still saw him as nothing but a pain who expected to be paid for his work instead of giving it freely just because he was mortal and it left them to see him as nothing more than a list of discoveries to be exploited and he was done dealing with it all.
He’d been working himself to the bone to try and grow to help the world and still, all they saw him as after all he’d accomplished was nothing more than a convenient bit of experience to be enjoyed, leaving him to question why he was even trying so hard in the first place. The world wasn’t his problem. Who cared how doomed it was, he’d been trying his best the entire time and it still wasn’t enough to get any real recognition that he didn’t have to fight tooth and nail for. Why continue putting his body and soul through so much when that was the only reward waiting for him in the end?
It was a series of thoughts that echoed through his many minds on his entire way home, making his way through Anailia and hoping the entire way he wouldn’t be stopped by anyone he knew; getting that small mercy as he arrived back at the shop.
With the question of what to do next. He hadn’t had a proper break in forever and he’d meant what he’d told the gods. Why try so hard for the planet if that was his reward? Someone else could make tools and weapons, all he needed to do was relax.
…I feel like I haven’t drawn in a while. Why not do that for a bit?
It was as good a solution as any and he knew exactly how he wanted to do it so with a plan for however long he was stuck on that planet firm in his thoughts he went home, going around to the backyard as he began materializing.
Using his phenomenal level of skill and power, he bent the mana he held to create only a few simple things. A lawn chair, some sunglasses, a sketchbook, and some pencils before laying down to get to work, taking what felt like his first real day off in ages.
---
<THE GOD MYRIAD WANTS PERMISSION TO VIEW YOUR THOUGHTS AND SPEAK IN YOUR MIND. ALLOW?>
<THE GOD PHIXTH WANTS PERMISSION TO VIEW YOUR THOUGHTS AND SPEAK IN YOUR MIND. ALLOW?>
Still deny all.
Every now and then he’d receive notifications again as different gods tried to talk to him but he continued to ignore them in favour of continuing his drawing, adding another filled sketchbook to the pile after his few hours out there before materializing another to begin doodling in.
Whatever they wanted, he didn’t care. He didn’t want to keep putting in effort for a planet that just wanted to exploit him, why even bother? Better to focus on enjoying the bit of peace he could take for himself.
And despite the small, nagging voice in the back of his head telling him he was being unproductive and wasting his time, it felt good. He hadn’t been able to overfill his soul during his quest and now it was one of the longest times in weeks he’d put it off, not feeling any strain nor injury in that intangible part of himself that made him question why he’d even tried so hard to begin with. Why put himself through agony to finish the job faster and looking at the future, why even be willing to die for that world?
That was still the crux of it in the end. All he’d done since getting back had been for the sake of growing stronger and the decision to quit was like a weight lifting from his shoulders. That planet wasn’t his responsibility. By any reasonable judgment it was the gods’ and if that was the case then let them screw over their believers while the masses let them with smiles on their faces. Why did he have to get stronger to try and help?
Aside from the fact that the gods of this world are absolutely not going to be able to beat Oaun which means the invasion is going to end in our loss, and… No. No, I’m not thinking about it. This is officially not my problem. I’m the forgotten summoned, the nobody that nobody wanted. Even if they didn’t know I was trying to get stronger to try and help save the world, it's been one thing after another ever since I arrived here. No matter what I do or what I pull off, no god wants to pay me fairly for my work and I’m just tired of it all. However things turn out is officially their problem instead of mine.
He tried to silence his nagging thoughts as his attention was focused back on his drawings, the pencil in his hand working on something more abstract while he used his magic to keep it sharp, even as more thoughts came in.
I don’t want to die for this planet and I don’t want the people I care about to die either. Damn it. So what does that mean? I just give in, let the gods get what they want from me without a fight and then still probably die trying to protect this entire stupid world?
His feelings were a mess but as he asked himself that the arc of his pencil froze in his hand, the question bringing a different one to mind.
Why should I have to die to save the world anyway? Why not just save the bits I care about?

That's fair. But somehow I see that during into demon god ripping through those portals. Somehow.

2024-10-26 15:03:06 +0000 UTCI hope Ben will become more free and fun in his endeavors, at least a little bit. It feels like he has tunnel vision and skips over options, like gaining skills, or even trying for T3 Knowledge.

2024-10-26 09:39:05 +0000 UTCI don't think it was ever said one way or the other. All that was ever explicitly stated was "you died to get here" and "we have no idea how this spell works". The implication, along with Ben's class' situation (and presumably the other groups as well), was that it could ONLY snatch those who were freshly dead. But even if it was highly likely that Ben's class was going to die from lack of oxygen in the cave (not really clear how they died), that isn't the same thing as them being actually dead. It's a distinction that I think many would find extremely important. Ben in particular; he already doesn't like most of the gods, so if he finds out they actually killed him in addition to kidnapping his soul, he will not take that lying down.

2024-10-26 02:58:25 +0000 UTCI wonder if Ben and Oglit can turn the gate network into an evacuation network? And I still don't see why Ben and Oglit aren't antimatter bombing the shit out of every demon world Oglit knows the location of. Hard to stage a massive invasion when all your people are vaporized or "breathing" vaccum. Then "all" they'd have to worry about would be Ouam.
Person
2024-10-26 01:51:42 +0000 UTCI might be wrong here, but I’m pretty sure it was always capable of summoning still living people, it’s just that they targeted people who were dead/dying because it was more ethical and they needed to construct new bodies in their universe anyways, so it was more efficient to target dead people.
Popsleo
2024-10-25 23:03:15 +0000 UTCI’m really, really looking forward to this. If Ben pronounces that the world they’re on is a lost cause, I think the people who know him will listen and take him seriously. And if he then combines that with (what will obviously be) the best evacuation plan any world has ever seen, I think he can actually get most of the people he cares about to leave with him. At the very least, the odds of achieving the evacuation he wants are always going to be higher than the odds of actually beating Ouan and all of the demons. Ben’s just choosing to face reality, rather than the comforting delusion that everyone else has embraced.
Sesharan
2024-10-25 22:08:18 +0000 UTCWe would presumably have heard if the portal beacons had disappeared. That’s the only indication the people of this world would have until the third wave actually hits.
Sesharan
2024-10-25 21:36:24 +0000 UTCI sort of assume that that’s the next step— we’ll probably see Anailia reach out through Thera, Nare reach out through Falk, Myriad reach out through Sachel, and maybe we’ll even see Helori’s apostle again. But none of those people are exactly flush with free time, and the gods who have permission to talk to those people are also the gods who are the most likely to A) agree that Ben deserves a break and B) spend their time chastising and negotiating with the other gods to actually fix this problem rather than jumping straight to bugging Ben.
Sesharan
2024-10-25 21:34:35 +0000 UTCOn one hand the mana cost to do that would be insane. On the other hand, he'd probably get materialization to tier 3 (possibly 4 if that tier even exists). He would possibly also get a world creator job to go with his world destroyer job as well.
TheLostGolem
2024-10-25 21:25:06 +0000 UTCAlso, weren't the grey looking for a world to go to? In the end, the one Ben is on was essentially the best option. However, with Ben's materialization, who is to say that he couldn't just make a world and let Myriad be the god of that particular world?
Violenity
2024-10-25 21:18:35 +0000 UTCSee, this seems bad, but I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop. You know, when his investigation into the summoning spell finally advances enough that he realizes the spell doesn't collect dead souls...it rips souls out of living bodies. Sure, maybe the gods took people that were most likely going to die, but most likely isn't already dead. I look forward to 200 awakened warriors of various specialties getting supremely enraged.

2024-10-25 20:53:25 +0000 UTCI guess the only problem would be that world's seem to generate gods when founded so there would be since pretty powerful, but compared to Ouan manageable, gods to kill/befriend to make another world feasible

2024-10-25 20:53:05 +0000 UTCMyriad doesn't deserve the silent treatment, but it definitely highlights how much Ben is hurting right now. If anybody would forgive Ben going AWOL, it's Myriad since he's one of the few that really KNOWS what Ben has been through, and knows Ben deserves a break. I think Myriad had even said at some point that Ben deserves to sit back and do absolutely nothing, considering everything here already done for the world.

2024-10-25 20:46:47 +0000 UTCCorrect, not many people realize all that he has done for the world. And the gods like it that way. Just like they like that not many people realize how little the gods have done for the world.

2024-10-25 20:43:07 +0000 UTCBen's skip town idea is surprisingly viable at this point if you think about it. Alot of people are commenting that Ben couldn't achieve it because all the people he would want to save have things like friends tying them down. I agree with that point, but at this point it's entirely viable for Ben to create a super portal to evacuate everyone on the world that wants to leave. He has the Grey to locate a new world to move to. He has the ability to create souls in massive quantities to fuel said portal. His mentor is a 3rd tier crafter to help create said super portal, and he also has the great space spirit as well. All that's left to do for him is to add a blacklist to said portal to exclude all the gods and people he hates to leave them there. Granted, at that point it's not so much skipping town as it is taking the town with him, but it seems entirely plausible to me. Anyone got any thoughts on this? Also, I am aware that eventually the demon's would find them, but that would take time, and I'm pretty sure Ben would have enough time to either get sacrilege to tier 3 or make a plan.

2024-10-25 18:35:09 +0000 UTCI mean, all of them are stupid. I don't understand how you go from discussing someone over reaching their power and deciding shit that they shouldn't have the right to decide to for some reason her decision to stop you from getting access to adventures which you should have access to anyway, is a collective decision and will only give you access to more adventurous if you do this that the third for us
Isiah Debarros
2024-10-25 18:19:12 +0000 UTCI mean, most of them are probably not gonna really take it seriously because they're dumbasses, but they has to be a decent amount of them that are losing their fucking minds because this is the first time that he blocked out every god and if they find out, they should realize that he isn't having a tantrum
Isiah Debarros
2024-10-25 18:17:39 +0000 UTCThe problem with the skipping town idea is that it's not gonna work because the people who cares about other people they care about and their invested in the survival of the world Something big is going to have to happen in order for the gods to stop, acting like spoiled children. It's very strange because like even though Ben is a contender They treat him like he isn't and that he isn't a powerful fighter like he's probably the most knowledgeable mage on the planet and even even without his jacket, he could do some insane stuff with his mana now and considering he kind of stopped caring about training to fight the demon god he's probably gonna start wearing it again, which basically turns him into it walking nuclear deterrent
Isiah Debarros
2024-10-25 18:16:29 +0000 UTCIt's just insane because they basically chose to overstep their bounds right like the adventure guild being a rank one adventure comes with privileges he can make a quest if he wants to then someone decides that she's gonna tell her follower who is the leader of the adventurer to block that which is against the rules that situation is to further alienate him by instead of fixing what they fucked up and make it so they don't block his quest which they have no right to do because he's not asking for anything out of the ordinary they decide that he actually has to do things that they want him to do in order for him to be able to get access to the adventures so they put a stipulation on something that they don't have the right to put a stipulation on and the worst part is that he was going to help other contenders out anyway like it's very unlikely that Been knows every contender but he does know at least 6 if we can count the two new ones that he found out about and it's not like when he's doing a job speed run for the people he cares about and they're around because I'm pretty sure they would be around the soul mages that he would say not considering they themselves could both of adventure jobs themselves and help him out
Isiah Debarros
2024-10-25 18:13:39 +0000 UTCYeah, he's done so much for the world and like if it was literally anybody else they would be given at the bare minimum recognition. I'm pretty that most people don't even know that it's him that killed the outsider and close the portal to hell. And I know they didn't go out of their way to block the info that the demigod tried to kill him, but like did they mention that he was trying to kill him as he was trying to close the portal to hell because I feel like they would forget to mention that because it's convenient

2024-10-25 17:44:16 +0000 UTCI'm pretty sure like the only reason why they were able to push the forbidden gods into the demons with because of how similar they were to their new species and Marriott original species is like vastly different from every other species in existence it might be easier at this point because like he has more humanoid followers and he also like has the experience that one died, but that one follower against all of the souls of his original species, and the two gods that joined him Make it probably take more for him to be able to do it

Maybe a heart-to-heart talk with someone about all the innocents in the world that deserve saving despite the gods actions and the peoples reverence of those same gods. But at the same time, this does feel like more of a tipping point that Bens previous conflicts with the Gods. However this ends between them all is gonna be more final, I believe. 2024-10-25 16:38:53 +0000 UTCI doubt most of them realized it yet, it hasn't even been a day. The effects of Ben quitting aren't yet showing to hammer it home. If he had handed out 1 or 2 of those, and the world questioned where more infinite food machines were - that would be more than a small fire under the gods asses.
Emily Gurnavage
2024-10-25 16:37:20 +0000 UTCI'm afraid there won't be immediate realization. Gods already got a lot of items from Ben and his detractors will be saying that it's enough and they need warriors now. The realization might happen if they find a possesed Naloth and no one to kill him. Or another tier 3 demon who might ascend. Or if Ben makes something amazing, but refuses to sell it.

He can keep re-locating, or move on to another dimension etc. That and: even the Demon God didn't mess with ALL planets, some are clearly beyond his reach (aka not worth the effort).
