ICQ (Chorus Lead)

Surprise! There are two parts in this section of ICQ. Last week's rhythm lesson and this weeks lead are meant to be played together at the same time.

Of course's not practical for me to play both parts at the same time. At live shows I'll usually play the funky clean part, but I wish I could hire Phobos I to hop on stage and help out with this one. However, the guy hasn't played music in years. There's a lot of pretty crazy rumours going around, but I hear he's been living a simple life working as a potato farmer outside of the city. If anyone has any info on his whereabouts, please let me know!

Like many of the parts I teach on this page, this one comes out of the extended A minor pentatonic scale:

The first 3 notes in measure 1 (m1) are connecting the 2 notes on the D string (G and A) using a chromatic passing tone in the middle.

The second phrase (latter half of m1) uses hammer ons and pull offs. Although the open A string isn't in the scale shape, A is in the A minor pentatonic scale (A C D E G), so it's safe to use! Same with the open G string a few notes later.

Both the phrase at the end of m2 and the one at the end of m4 take place in the upper limits of the scale. Focus on keeping the notes fluid and legato here. This is a real good one for working on hammer ons, pull offs, and slides.
