Penetrator Concept Sketch

Here's another design that was jumped on me, and fairly welcome.
While me and my crew sometimes get a bit of input on the designs we're assigned, often it's a bit too far into the selection process to push around too many picks. So something I've been meaning to put together is a big ranked list of mechs our guys want to work on and feel the community would want to see. I final got that made and everyone's choices in so that the CGL brass can reference it each time they're brainstorming products to make sure they're not forgetting any obvious popular picks.
We all have our favorite mechs, and a lot of us (and you) can generally agree on what's popular, but in the moment it can be hard to remember all of them when it's important.
And so, not long after, the Penetrator was requested from the list, and it was nice to know it helped.
Who else has this mech high up on their "want it" list for a fresh look?
I'm not personally a huge fan of it, but I've seen it on the table before and many people speak fondly of it, so I know there's demand. There's no doubt its weapons load is nice. There's also no doubt it looks super funky haha.
I started with Bishop's Penetrator fanart design as a basis along with a few other sources and went from there.
I wanted to maintain the simple torso silhouette while making the involved shapes more interesting than they've been before. Fixing the legs was also a no brainer, and while Matt Plog's Penetrator art generally improved upon the original I found reincorporating the originals shin curves helped immensely.
Wub wub wub.
Those legs look so much more realistic

Could we have a 3D render of this model, now that the news are out?

Beautiful. Fingers crossed that we'll see the Gallowglas like this one day.

Looks great! I love the Penetrator and the art fixes probably the worst part of the model (the arms). TRO 3055's art wasn't bad for it though. That said, it's nice to have what look like functional legs :)

Hollander was always a worry early on in Mech commander!

Looks fantastic. Seems like you updated very little from the original art, but looks incredible as opposed to the original looking like a mess. Pretty much entirely due to the arms no longer looking like wet noodles. Definitely want to pick one up even if I feel they are terrible on tabletop.

A lot of people definitely want more videogame mechs.

A good strategy might be to capitalize on crossover appeal with many of the videogames that have been popular over the years. For instance Mech Commander 2 (Razorback, Starslayer, Anubis, Sha Yu, Men Shen, Lao Hu). Many players would also be keen to see mechs from the Wizkids/Clix Mechwarrior franchise (Targe, Sun Cobra, Jupiter, Arbalest, etc).

Not sure about the offset lasers, but the original is one of my favorites, with Archer's variant being just that much nicer. I've a 3150 version I use that I love.

Gonna be going against the flow and say that I appreciate the offset outer lasers on the side torsos. Gives the Mech just that little bit extra visual distinction where I feel it would otherwise be very bare if it was all in a neat row. I think you killed it with this redesign. All these new Mechs is giving me a very unhealthy urge to nab one of each at the very least. Gotta salvage'em all, right?

I absolutely love it. Great job modernizing it. Really impressed with how you handled the legs, really shouts back to the original goofy design while making it have that modern digitigrade look. Cannot wait to see this as a mini!

Mostly Randall, Brent, and Ray, who are the main company/battletech leads. Sometimes others get involved such as writers or stats people. Very much a team process.

Yeah I felt that all 6 lasers in a row, all along the front edge of the mech was a little too repetitive, and moving the outer ones would give a reason for further shapes to break things up.

Maybe you answered it before but who assigns the mechs for you to work on?
That aside, I would love love LOVE to see a modernized design of the Nightsky. Super fast jumpy medium axe-killer with a grumpy face mech!

The outer pulse lasers are offset? was this intended to add some distinction to the torso?

I think the names for the mechs Stalker and Penetrator should be switched. The Penetrator looks like an awesome Stalker, and the Stalker looks like an enormous Penetrator.

This was on my list for sure! It always sounded cool in the fiction with Kai, Trevena and Archer all piloting one.

Looks great! My only feedback would be to keep all six of those lasers on the chest at the same height.

One of the big problems over the years has been that a 'Mech might be good on the table, but the art or mini are ugly as sin so they get ignored. The Penetrator was definitely one such 'Mech. This looks worlds better.

I told you we should have gone even crazier on the lasers...and just randomly slapped then on all willy nilly, like the engineers were playing "pin the tail on the donkey"

This old classic didn't really have reverse leg, it had some broken goose-stepping non functional hybrid.

Ok I will pile on with the legs were messed up on the TRO 3055 picture. Going back in time.. (a ways) when TRO 3055 came out we flipped through this and stopped at two mechs, the Penetrator and the Falconer. How the heck did either one of these mechs move? Did the Davion blue print section do a few too many rails of Canopian Battle Powder?? The only thing I would change on the sketch, would be one thing.. and this is from a lot of time in both MWO and MW 5: as a pilot having four lasers on line and two lasers slightly off line would mess with me like no ones business. Cat on a hot tin roof or ADHD kicking in on my part?? Other than that one issue, dude.. this is a 1000% increase for the better. (sushi for a month awaits when the Hatamoto-Chi is shown... just saying)

I'm definitely on the list of people who desperately wanted this one redone. I have a soft spot for the TRO3055 mechs, but a lot of them just didn't translate super well to miniature, and this (and the Falconer) were the two biggest disappointments in that regard. The Daimyo was always going to look terrible, but *this* has potential. Bishop's redo of it gave me hope, and now here we are :D

It looks pretty good, but I wouldn't necessarily recognize this is even a Penetrator. If I saw this art in a book I might think it was a new mech because the legs are so different. I have to say I honestly like the old classic reverse bird legs better. Modernizing legs can be a good thing because I liked what you did with the legs of the Flashman, for example. But here, I think it will need time to grow on me. Also, it looks very much top heavy here - maybe make the feet a bit larger if the goal is greater realism. The original had nice big feet for crushing fallen Clan mechs or elementals. Finally, I definitely echo the point above about preferring the medium lasers in a nice even row. Right now this reminds me of the "slapped on" laser weapon look common to many Mechwarrior Online variants. Those are just my thoughts.

I'd still love to see a Bane 3. "Yo, dawg, I heard you liked LRMs. So we put LRMs on your LRMs. And added a single shot SRM because giggles."
2022-02-17 10:57:46 +0000 UTC
Very interesting redesign there of a concept that is... yeah, the Penetrator has always been a bit of a funky one. Yet, you kept the whole thing true to its original form and nicely recongisable. Here's hoping we see some more 3055 redesigns.
(also it will totally die of AMS ammo explosion)

Modernized, but still true to the original. The proportion between torso and legs sems a bit odd. Or maybe the legs look as if the mech is crouching down? Overall, i really like it.

Nice. The original legs never quite worked for me, so it's really nice to see what you've done here. Personally I prefer the medium lasers all lined up though, but that's a minor quibble!
