Charger Concept Sketch

And here we complete the Bishop bonanza. You're all going to be stuck with a bunch of mech 3D renders next month due to me blowing through all sketches this month haha.

Also HUGE thanks for all new signups and the rest of you that have stuck around in place for so long. I'm only $13 away from hitting that crazy $1000/mo mark. I was hoping I'd hit that last year, but now is just as good a time. It really helps me not stress about finances, when stress is a great way to hamper ones artistic process.

Anyway, here's the Charger! This one goes on my growing list of mechs that make me groan that we're spending time on, but here we are. I assigned it to Bishop, and to be fair to him I don't think he did too bad. But in the end my pedantic brain found a tiny thing to change with just about everything, so this one is peak "colab".

Bishop and Alan recently raised a very fair phrase with my process... sometimes I just need a good mannequin to work on top of. I try to not make that a norm, but sometimes that's the way it goes. And I HIGHLY value to efforts of my design team, I can't do this stuff alone. Ben, Harri, Alan, Dale, and our other occasional guests are a critical part of Battletech's visual revival.

Now. What mechs are you most looking forward to seeing 3D renders of?

Comments

I think it looks very much like a Modern Charger! Great job!

William B Teter

*looks at literally all the OG art... compares proportions...shrugs*

Benjamin Myers (Bishop Steiner)

You made a crap 'Mech look cool.

Trevor R.N.

This art really doesn't look like a Charger at all. It looks exactly like a light or medium mech in terms of all around proportions, which is all wrong. The whole Charger aesthetic is that it's a light mech on steroids with huge thick arms and legs for CHARGING and a rather small head. This art is just asking to get head shotted repeatedly. Imagine how much glass that is, and how easy a target it would be on an 80 tonner. At the very least, shrink the head on this thing.

Blacknight

I hated the original design for this mech, visual and game mechanics. This redesign is a step in the right direction. Reminds me of a Halo Spartan. It would be interesting to see what it would look like leaning into that aesthetic.

Aaron Thurston

The team does fantastic work! Mechs I’d like to see are the Talon, the Falcon, the Osprey to name a few ( although I look forward to all these mechs you share). With this revival I’ve had my wife ask to learn to play. She wants to paint all the mechs ( she recently asked if I could get another SWA SSD because she wants to customize it into the Knight Hammer). My thanks to all of you for helping to give new life to this great game!

Jeffery Smith

Can we see some previews this week?

Robert Moore

no worries mate. YMMV. Though... my OG take was less busy. But, it might not work as well for some other folk as this version. This is probably 50/50 Me and Anthony. Win some, lose some.

Benjamin Myers (Bishop Steiner)

I am hoping it is the IMP, but that is just me!

Robert Moore

Haven't gotten to them yet, but one may be an item :P

Anthony Scroggins

Just wondering if the Imp and Shogun have gotten the redesign treatment yet and if so could we see them?

Robert Moore

I dunno. I've really enjoyed Bishop's work, but somehow I feel like the Charger design is a little busy. It's not bad, just not my preference.

Peter Shah

Legit question about Nomenclature. cause I generally cannot be bothered to remember Alphanumeric designations I always called the big bore autocannon "Assault Charger" and the 3050 Iteration "Missile Charger" and the one I would actually use the "Hatamoto Chi" ;) is there a similar internal nomenclature for that?

James Bixby

just wanna suck the joy out of everything

James Bixby

No fun allowed here.

Anthony Scroggins

Mysteries abound :)

Anthony Scroggins

Im not sure why im saying this, maybe I’m sick today and I haven’t really found that out yet, but I’d like to see an updated Quickdraw

Jakob Fredensborg

*looks about helplessly in NDA*

Benjamin Myers (Bishop Steiner)

thunder was in one of the RCs recently, wasn't it?

Benjamin Myers (Bishop Steiner)

Could we get an alt concept of the assault charger and the missile charger?

James Bixby

Kintaro, first....

Jarod DePastene

So this means the Hatamoto Chi is next, yes? :)

Joe Wright

Who hasn’t taken one of these in a Solaris battle and be one of the last men standing?😂

Robert Moore

Great work. I've always had a soft spot for the Charger. Big fan of the small pistol arm.

Charles Lubanje

Great job with all of the less popular "workhorse" designs. These collaborations have been pretty strong. As for renders....Dervish please (if not done yet). :)

Mitchell Berthelson

A bit odd that we got the 3S Banshee as default on the reasoning "more visible weapons = more sales" but we get the original popgun Charger?

Dan Middleton

Not a fan of the Charger but this looks great! I hope they give it some functional variants someday.

Pledger K

When are some of these gonna make it to their own Lance Packs? So many beautifully done facelifts. Thanks!

Richard Jensen

The Black Python / White Raven / Viper? Quite a ways back I posted the design sketch for it, though I guess I didn't show the 3D that was used to make the Rec Guide lineart.

Anthony Scroggins

Lookin forward to seein that Jaeger.

Raymond White

I would love to see the Scorpion in 3d as well as the firefly, When you get the Cicada you need to have a locust for size comparison. Great job with the Charger!

Robert Moore

I just want to say that I'm really happy that you went with the OG Charger design. The Charger being a military-industrial-complex boondoggle is literally its entire shtick. Screw being competent, if I wanted an effective 80-tonne assault I'd just take an Awesome. What I crave for in my 'Mechs is character!

Oh. And the Thunder!

Andrew Wiesner

Other 3055 mechs I’d like to see rendered are: Rakshasa, Gallowglas, Cerberus, Berserker, Rifleman IIC and Viper.

Andrew Wiesner

I’d love to see a Wraith render. It’s one of my favorite designs and a great IS response to the Clan invasion.

Andrew Wiesner

Why would Swordsman need to be updated?

Benjamin Myers (Bishop Steiner)

With regards to the upcoming 3D renders, my votes go to the Clint and the Vulcan

TIM STRAUVEN

Nice. It would be nice to see the -3K and -1A5 variants too…but I get it. I believe those would out-sell the -1A1. As for 3D models, I wish to see all that haven’t been released yet. Ostsol, Ostroc, Dervish, Vulcan, Clint, Javelin, Cicada and Jagermech. A group shot to show scaling would be cool too. For the most part I think that’s been spot on. Like others have stated, I wish to see 3025 completed. Hermès II and Whitworth are each significant in my personal Battletech history.

Burning Chrome

Never a charger fan, but everything has someone that loves it. 3d render of that sexy firefly please? And someone mentioned the Rifleman IIc. How about just the Rifleman II?

Matthew Morris

As for what mechs I want to see.... the only ones left on my "must have" list are the Quickdraw, Swordsman, and Hollander II.

Jarod DePastene

As always it seems that Bishop has a weak spot for cripples, bast... no wait that was the other one. But still greatly appreciated. Love chargers as much as i love all the underdog mechs. Soooo... did someone say GOLIATH? :3

Swen Decker

Bishop, you absolute freaking Chad! :)

Jarod DePastene

Yes. YEEEEESSSSS!

Jarod DePastene

take it up with Ray, Brent, etc. The 1A5 was definitely too niche a variant to be the primary mini, and there are enough variants folks could push for. My push was for the CGR-3K, being the Clan Invasion. But the PTBs overruled.

Benjamin Myers (Bishop Steiner)

My GAWD! it’s beautiful!

Joe Wright

What about the Hermes and Kintaro? And I must admit I am pretty disappointed this is not the 1A5, but the absolut useless 1A1.

Henning Boessler

Did I miss the Whitworth…? This Charger catches me more than the Original. I like to use them in my Campaigns…

Jürgen Frey

Scorpion's already got a redesign, you can see the new lineart in Recognition Guide: IlClan volume 19. And I have a feeling we'll also see the Quickdraw in a Rec Guide volume soon, given that it's on the cover art for "Empire Alone."

Malintus

What’s left from the 3025 stable of ‘Mechs to be redesigned? The Quickdraw? The two quads, Goliath and Scorpion?

Brian Sausley

Yeah I was kind of surprised they didn’t go down that path, I have a soft spot for the 1A5 and I could definitely find space for a few in my collection. I hope the variants get done in the future, this design is a great starting point.

David

Yes, this. GM Sniper Custom! I was trying to figure out why it seemed familiar.

Brian Sausley

I feel like maybe the Charger should've used one of the more useful variants for the model like was done with the Banshee.

Maybe soon, maybe.

Anthony Scroggins

Rifleman IIc. Doeet. Doeet.

"Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face. By an 80 ton 'Mech. Or kicked. Either one." -Wells Technologies Chief Design Engineer, probably

Remember, an 80 tonner that has the armor and movement profile of a 50 tonner.

Benjamin Myers (Bishop Steiner)

No. No WeabooMoto Cheeze! Ok. Maybe. Or maybe not, or what the heck, .... [Redacted under NDA]

Benjamin Myers (Bishop Steiner)

Absolutely love this one. I can't believe I like a Charger! Haha. Outstanding work. <3

Jordan G Roberts

Hmmm.... Looks way too influenced by MWO. A lot of weak points with that many separate armor panels and seems a bit skinny for an 80 tonner. Hopefully the mini itself doesn't give off such an MWO vibe. Personally, this one looks like a bit of a miss.

Andrew McKenna

Head is very GM-like. Not a bad thing.

Dan Middleton

Very interesting. Does this mean that a Hatamoto might be in the pipeline?

Alex F

Nice work on the Charger. :) Intimidating and I like it, even though the 3025 design stats are trash with 5 small lasers :P
