Ostol Concept Sketch

This is you versus the guy she told you not to worry about.

They might not be in the kickstarter but the remaining ostmechs are not forgotten. We debated their inclusion a lot, but the question was never if we do them, it was when and where we'd do them.
Of course I have no idea what this Ostol is for but it was requested from above so here he is!

I wanted to stay a little faithful to the original, but generally follow the level of looseness that I took with the Ostscout, aka adjust whatever was needed to make this mech not look like a total joke haha.
Original lineart, some phoenix details rolled in (I like how it had mellee considerations) and then pulling many elements from my own Ostscout to maintain that they're part of a design family.

Did I do gud?

Well done! I like the shocks in the legs that seem similar to the current (and terrific) Ostwar model. I also like the head is still resembling the vaguely Mike Mignola/golem-esque design of the original art. I look forward to fielding this some day.

Ben

Wow! I've never cared for the Osts, until you started redesigning them! This guy is actually as good looking as the Ostscout and Ostwar!!!!

Joshua Bressel

I'm hoping this is part of what Catalyst was referring to when they said, "We will reopen the PM for Wave 2, and likely with some updated or new material you may find enticing."

Mike

Going back, I think there is only two things I would change. 1 - Smaller arms, because they're a weak point on the design, and 2 - Remove the big glass portion of the cockpit so it gives a nod to the classic art and gives it some personality.

this is a 1000% improvement on one of the ugliest mechs in the game. THANK YOU!

Jeffery Smith

Ya done good.

Mark

I like the blade antennas. IDK about the palps around the cockpit. The bug mouth look is kind of cool, but they are going to reduce the pilot's peripheral vision and situational awareness.

The arms look useful. What is the purpose of that dent in the center of the torso? I thought it was some sort of radar on the original one. And I love those kneecap plates. Stubbier weapons look less fragile but have lost the socket mounts that suggested independent targeting,

I think maybe the torso should be a little longer

Robert Moore

I always hated the Ostbros because they looked terrible. This sculpt will make me want to buy it.

Taylor Shead

Steam punk Ostol! I think the legs should be a skosh skinnier but still like the design.

Todd W

Would that be the Ost-Pack or the Ost-Lance?

Peter Campi

It finally doesn't look like an egg someone used straws as arms and legs on anymore!

Peter Holthaus

Amazing work, as always.

Goloka Bernal

Semi chronological, but if one pack is coming together faster than an earlier one, I shift focus to finishing the later pack first.

Anthony Scroggins

Not one I like but absolutely an improvement over the original.

Tyler Erickson

Wow that looks amazing!

Leagues ahead of the old art. Yes Loose's is iconic but yeeesh..the original art has aged baaaaaaaaaaaadly. Your interpretation and modern iteration is far far far better.

Steven Cross

Mostly the arms, only because they're not that strong in armor.

If you did a pack of the Ostscout, Ostwar, Ostroc, and Ostsol in this sort of design, I would for the first time ever consider buying an Ost-mech.

Robert Schuster

DUDE. I fucking love it. Can we please get a miniature of this real quick????? This is one of my favorites.

Ha! Going to have to get an extra one and sculpt some tentacle mouth parts. A little more eldritch horror to go with the "Black Marauder."

Anthony, if I may ask, how are you organizing the redesign workflow? Is your team working chronologically, fulfilling the design work in the order of the KS stretch goals? Or, are you working on everything simultaneously?

I like how you've incorporated some of the design elements from the re-re-seen Oscout. The older design always made me think of Timer the Cheese Guy from School House Rock.

This was an incredible surprise, though!

Raymond White

You did very gud.

Raymond White

The limbs could be a little less chunky but otherwise great.

Chris L

OST's are supposed to be weird, but functional and actually competent at what they do. You got it bang on.

Mitchell Berthelson

I like it, it looks like an Ostol and the heavy 'Mech it should be, very good sir.

Trevor R.N.

It's recognizable, and it works! Now let's see it lean way back... Do you think the upper legs might be a little too bulked up? I usually like it that way but if there's a place for skinny legs it's in the Ost family. I think the lower leg shaping is great.

Carlos Sempere

... OH KAY *he says in a high pitched surprised voice* I can dig it! I have always thought that the Ost(s) were the most uninspired stupid looking pieces of garbage that were invented to fill out pages of a book. But a series of mechs with this design language? I'd pay money for that.

I like it, it looks like “the Nuseen ostscout but more” which should be the core of the ostsol/ostroc

James Bixby

Just wow! How you can turn such a ugly mech into something I want on my table is pure gold . Well done .

Charles granger

So I am thinking that for a new box set Ostsol, Ostroc, Ostscout, and a redesigned Dervish would make for a great hunter killer lance!

Robert Moore

Fingers crossed for more iron wind metals models. : )

Jordan G Roberts

Any word on the Ostroc?

Robert Moore

Very Nice! I am happy to finally see your take on this one! Can't wait to see it in plastic! Well done Sir!

Robert Moore

Love what you're doing for the Ost series, they look like actual mechs now instead of something out of a fever dream (No offense to original artists, but damn the look was bad) Can't wait to see what the team does for the Ostroc and Ostwar in the future.

Malintus

That looks a lot less silly than the original. Love the kneecaps.

I never got into the Ost-family, for various reason the least of which is their looks, but this is really reasonable. I would absolutely field one of these little bad boys on the table!

I've been trying to put my finger on it, and there's something vaguely Chulu-esque (Cthuloid?) about the head... I like it a lot.

Stewart Spencer

I think his stayed more faithful in some ways but less so in others, so it's kind of an equal comparison there. Personally I wanted it to have a sleeker flowing body, otherwise I would have gone with his version. I also had to take into account that I already have an Ostcout design to match, while his did not take that consideration.

Anthony Scroggins

sorry, but this one from Bradigus rocks better than yours. https://unitcolorcompendium.com/end-of-july-2019-state-of-progress-update/ the black and white just kicks, which I am trying to find on facebook again. better proportions. sorry.

Bravo - A mech I always like the stats of but couldn't bring myself to spend money on such an ugly mini.

Stewart Spencer

What a pleasant surprise! Thank you Anthony, it's excellent!

U gud man. U fine. Couldnt ask for more ostsolness. And its not even christmas!

Swen Decker

SOOooooo much better than the older one!!!

Danny

Yeah, some things that must go for the future. I managed the torso flow more on the Ostscout, but I felt on this one it needed a little more aggression on the angles to sell its tonnage.

Anthony Scroggins

I want one. Can't wait to see what you do with the 'roc!

David

Oh, you good *real* gud. Real gud indeed. Of course, now I'm curious why the higher-ups asked you to design this.

Mike

You did good , belly rub for you.

Looks good - I think the key to the OST mechs is that the torso and pelvis should form one contiguous shape rather than looking like two pieces as most mech designs do. Also - a lot of thier character in the art work comes from the pose - so it can be hard to associate it directly from an initial lineart elevation.

Phil

I'd roll with that. I'd maybe shorten the torso barrels a bit, but I like it. I'd rather have this in a lance than the older version.
