Linebacker Concept Sketch

Time for another design, the Linebacker.

Not the most inspiring mech, but I understand to some it's a staple heavy.
The old art came with a simple block torso, and practically unusable legs haha. I mostly referenced the Matt Plog lineart version, as the original lines and CCG art were near universally terrible.

For the hip hating crowd, this guy will take a bit more effort than the nova/viper/etc, but if you can cut out the back corners of the torso you'll be able to attach the legs there.

I voted for the Linebacker to be included in the Kickstarter. It looks absolutely awesome! Your revamps so far, the Direwolf, Stormcrow, Timberwolf, Cougar, Adder, all my personal favorites, are spot on. You are doing an outstanding job on the cockpits. This one almost looks like the head of a snake, damn good work, sir.

Very good looking. This mech needed your revamp. A lot. The LRMS will have covers?

Only issue I see is the armor on top of the ankle looks to limit the ankle movement extremely, perhaps add flex join in the armor that would allow the leg to rotate up higher, while still leaving the overall look.

I like the squat resting look, and I can see how it would lift it self up to run, extending the legs getting up to speed.

On some of the mechs that previously had no torso twist ability I like to design in parts that limit how much it can twist. It may not end up getting in the way, but the scoop is said intended element.

If I gave the ankle near the foot end some articulation, it could indeed be digitigrade.

Anthony Scroggins

I'll be sure to have more articulation and range of motion built in that is apparent here. I didn't want to give up the massive ankle armor just because it's a hard piece to make look decent.

Anthony Scroggins

It'll end up being a very short mech for its tonnage.

Anthony Scroggins

If I've done it, it's posted here. So a LOT left to go haha.

Anthony Scroggins

Overall I love it. The original art was pretty um minimal and it's like nobody ever really figured out how the legs attached so they just used angles and views where the arms blocked most of that and they didn't have to attempt to render the actual connection of the legs to the body.. I really pity you in that regard as there's practically nothing that shows a leg above the 'knee' if there's an artist version of 'and we apply lots of "hand-waveium'' ' it seems like what happened. The main things that don't work for me are the ankle armor not looking flexible and looking like it would block the leg being more 'straight up' at any point during movement. (as others mentioned) Also the chin 'scoop' looks like it would highly restrict your ability to torso-twist without running into the hips.. I'm having a hard time believing it could do a full 60deg twist to either side.

because you'd expect to see the name used by an elemental design? There's cannon re the clans playing american football. see http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Sheliak#Clan_Invasion

Love all of it except the ankles, they seem to be too far up the leg, that they look like a second set of knees, almost. Also the way the armour plating is over the front of the ankles, it looks like it would severely limit the freedom of movement of the ankle...all the rest is superb, as always :)

I’ll start by saying I love this concept, overall. The crouch, the torso & cockpit. Yes, similar to MWO, but I like that aesthetic, personally. But I was going to say pretty much the same as Daniel Shorman - the leg does look... weird to my eye... I *think* what I’m seeing is that the ankle looks so tall in relation to the rest of the leg and the ‘mech. It looks like the ankle joint meets the bottom of the ‘calf’ up noticeably higher above the ground than, say the Warhawk, which has a very similar leg design/structure. Looking at the Wahawk concept sketch, you can see part of the ankle joint; it’s directly above the foot-pad-structure, whereas here it looks like the joint is hidden behind the rest of the foot-structure coming up off the foot-pad. It makes the foot look very tall, and I think heavier, than many of the other concepts. Mostly, I think my gut-level description of this concept would be ‘grounded’ – as in not going to move from this ground… Probably a really good thing for a ‘mech called “Linebacker”, but on the other hand, it is supposed to be a wicked fast ‘mech…

I love the design overall, but it looks BIG. This think looks like it could step on the same weight Hellbringer.

Aaron Stevens

I like it so how many of the clan mechs are left to do?

Robert Moore

It actually looks like a heavy mech now!

David

Definitely has room to stretch it's legs. I'm trying to maintain the squat look of mechs that have previously been very short, at least as an option.

Anthony Scroggins

Either it's the angle, or the extreme crouch, but the legs look a tad too stubby IMO. Upper body looks sweet, though.

I pretty much only referenced the mini and the Matt Plog art.

Anthony Scroggins

Always more proof that Alex and I have similar ideas on how to fix up the mechs. I didn't look as the MWO version to keep some separation :P

Anthony Scroggins

The Linebacker is one of those mechs that I always *wanted* to like but never did. It's also one of the only waist-less mechs which I think looks fine with a waist: so long as you keep it squat and stocky, it is still very much recognizable as the Linebacker. MWO did a decent job, but they made it a lot taller/skinnier; I think you got it a lot closer to the original in terms of its proportions. I like it! Now to just give this same treatment to the Phantom and the Pouncer!

Robert Schuster

I made sure to not look at the MWO one at all for this, though I knew it had the curved cockpit that the miniature has.

Anthony Scroggins

Haha yeah. Really strong actuators I guess.

Anthony Scroggins

My thought is that the topmost little section can articulate a bit, and/or other little bits of flexibility on the plating.

Anthony Scroggins

It's how it looks on the mini and I liked that one sleek aspect.

Anthony Scroggins

I have always had a soft spot for the linebacker. Not my favorite mech, but it just LOOKS like a linebacker. You have preserved that here.

Lexikon

A vast improvement, Plog's art helped it but this finishes it off. The only bad thing about the Linebacker is that its a REALLY dumb name for a Clan Mech :p

Steven Cross

It looks a little boxy to me. It seems like you've gotten rid of the 'swept' look from the Dana Knutson version. It had a sleekness that I associate with the design.

Michael Cohen

This sketch looks great! It got me interested in reading about the Linebacker's stats and background for the first time.

I see a lot of the more functional MWO version in here and that is good. the linebacker has always been a mech that I loved on paper the the mini was terrible (Really all three of the 3055 wolf mechs) bully for you man! it looks great and now my Exiles can have a bunch of cool stuff

James Bixby

The head, in particular, is more MWO than I expected. Looks good, though.

Carlos Sempere

Never was impressed with this mech, the image design or the technical design. It was also just so bland with little to impress or make it unique. But this does make it more visually interesting. The ppcs in the arms I like especially.

MechaParade

I think its great! Its bluky and boxy. It looks like a tank, which means it looks scary.

It’s supposed to be a fast mech and it has never looked fast.

Andrew Bethards

Fantastic! looks way better in my opinion. I was never a fan of the old leg style.

Joseph Robles

Love it! Sticks to the clan style but still unique. I especially like the amount of detail on the left/right torso. One small thing I noticed was the plating that covers the top of the ankle joint, which angles down towards the front. If the leg straightened it seems like the foot wouldn't be able to straighten with it. Just a thought, although I do really love the design!

As a Wolf fan I like it! My only nitpick is that the cockpit seams out of place compared to the rest of the lines of the mech.
