It’s a challenge that’s hard even for powerful mages because you need a lot of different tools or hyper-specific tools to catch one easily. A lot of it is also luck just encountering one.

2025-11-18 20:45:34 +0000 UTCMy favorite part about this arc isn’t just how we meet so many new characters, but rather that we finally get a new comparison point for Fern against other mages. It’s so difficult to tell how talented fern is because she is always within frieren’s comparative shadow. Fern even struggled so much that it was mentioned as her personal complex in her fight against Lugner. The author is really good at keeping every character so nonchalant and unrevealing of how they feel in a fight or at any given important moment and then showing us later what was happening, and I can’t wait to see how yall continue reacting to the rest of this show!!

Not everyone will have a spell that capable of catching a Stilie. It is also specifically mentioned that Stilie has almost no mana so its almost impossible to detect it. It may even come down to luck to even encounter one. Hence, stealing others is another possible solution of clearing a test. Besides, you need to be strong to be first class mage, so what the point if they cant even secure their own captured Stilie? It also helps weed out the number of parties clearing the test. Also what if they are lesser Stilies placed in the exam area compared to number of parties participating? They are being tested together for a reason so it really isnt underhanded to attempt to steal it from others. Everyone knew what they signed up for.

The ones that could take the first class mage exam are most cases already strong mages - it’s just there are so many aspects about magic that differ from person to person. Some are great at the flashy attack spells, some are good at mana detection or reading someone’s mana and also hiding mana, some don’t have enough mana or have a lot… so a really crazy strong mage is good in all of those - which takes a long time and heck lot of training to master.

The animators and the composer gave this show a lot of love and attention bringing the world to life especially in the beginning. There are key moments where I know they'll just have to take it up that notch and I'm so impatient. 😭

I'll just say that there's a reason the show has been talking about the exams so much in previous episodes is because it's the longest arc by far in my opinion.
