2025-08-13 11:50:00 +0000 UTCRin wanted to enter the Holy Grail War initially to achieve her father's/family's goal of obtaining The Root, but she emphasized to Archer in one of the earlier episodes that she didn't have a wish and simply wanted to win the Holy Grail War to prove herself as a mage - but her motives have obviously evolved since being with Shirou.

2025-08-13 09:14:32 +0000 UTCAs someone who has watched UBW years ago but didnt really fully invest my attention to it... I will say the writing is EXTREMELY GOOD. It may seem confusing for you geks right now, but this rewatch for me made me realize how good UBW's writing is. There are SOOO many details/hints that foreshadow the plotline and all of those details connect soooo well together from a re-watcher's POV. So don't worry, everything will become clear!! But from a rewatcher's POV the writing isn't "confusing" or complicated... it's just that you guys are missing the last few pieces to connect them all together 🤣 Edit: Apparently the geks finished UBW and im excited to see what they think
lololol
2025-08-12 04:41:54 +0000 UTCJust binged your guys' reaction to this show. I can't wait to see what you all think of the finale. UBW's philosophical, it just shows more than it tells. Zero is more telling, I think (all those monologues and debates!). UBW tells, too, but for a majority of its runtime, it shows us its point and asks us to think about it ourselves. Like how Shirou gets that eerie wide-eyed look on his face, or always physically ignores his pain to the point of worsening his injury. Or Rin struggles with not being in control, or hides when she's being truly seen. Or how Archer is A SPOILER. The show's about generational trauma and how or even whether you can overcome it. Zero's also much more of an ensemble piece, whereas UBW is mostly a character study on Shirou, and whether he'll ever leave the genocide he survived or forever be stuck in that fire.

2025-08-12 02:33:14 +0000 UTCthe next episode or two explains basically everything you've been confused about and found inconsistent with Archer. I hope everything makes sense by the end of it for you guys.

2025-08-11 01:00:55 +0000 UTCI found myself lost a lot in Zero early on and always very intrigued in UBW, mainly because of what Zero taught me, still think Zero could be better for me after finishing UBW but for now this takes the cake
McKay Carter
2025-08-10 21:03:02 +0000 UTCsad to see the comparisons, but i understand it. This show's is the original canon, before Fate/Zero existed. It really is best to watch knowing the backstory from Zero, but without comparing, because like Carter said they are just two different types of stories being told.

2025-08-10 20:49:53 +0000 UTCRewatching UBW gives me a bit of AoT vibes where I catch small details I missed on my first watch. I do agree UBW is weaker in story compared to FZ probably because of when it was written and who the target audience of the original story was for, but imo, UBW (Ufotable) has the better balance of story, action, and fun characters over FZ. Again, UBW is based off of Fate Stay Night, an adult visual novel and it follows many shounen-esque storytelling formulas. This makes it come off as a much simpler story compared to FZ. Whereas, FZ was written by Urobuchi who is known for his dark-themed writing that have characters with interesting philosophies (Urobuchi also has a nickname, Urobutcher. Self-explanatory based on his stories lol). That said, I think Ufotable did a very good job making an early 2000's VN story more interesting by fleshing out a lot of the characters and giving us eye candy fights. Maybe I just have monkey brain and enjoy two strong fighters go at it 🐵 Regardless, I think it's fine to like one story over the other. Both are great for different reasons, and hey, maybe Carter will change his mind by the end of the season 👀 Next week up to the end of the season + Heaven's Feel will be peak all throughout. I guarantee the boys will have a good time 😁

2025-08-10 20:48:27 +0000 UTCJust to answer some of the questions at the end, and give some more non-spoiler explanations. Bit of a long one. Kuzuki lost so bad cause he's just a regular dude who's well trained. He beat Saber when massively buffed by Caster and taking her by surprise, but by himself he never stood a chance against a servant. Archer fought Lancer and drained a lot of Caster's mana since he was drawing it as her servant, then used it to heal. This meant he could sneak up on Caster and Kuzuki since Caster didn't have the reserves to spy on him, nor could she use her OP magecraft. Probably worth explaining a bit about heroic spirits/guardians. Heroic spirits are a collective term for powerful spirits which can be summoned through various means. The holy grail war is just one of these means. Archer is a guardian, which means he made a contract with the collective will of humanity to survive (not worth going into rn), and is summoned at various times throughout history in order to prevent humanity from going extinct. The point in time when he made this contract is irrelevant to the times in history he can be summoned. Like with the grail, guardians can be summoned to times before they existed. All guardians are heroic spirits, not all heroic spirits are guardians. Shirou has seemingly grown so much so quickly, because his issue originally was less about total mana and more about an inability to utilise that mana. Watching Archer and having real combat experience is helping him learn his 'trace on' skills a lot, and after he first projected, Archer helped him a ton with the activation of his mana circuits. However, sharing mana through the master/servant contract is something that Shirou never had any training whatsoever for, so despite growing with his one trick that doesn't mean he's automatically able to support Saber more. There's also a few things that do seem out of place in the story, but that's because in the original VN they're just not really part of this route. You can pick those storylines in another route, but they're mutually exclusive to the UBW route. Appreciate the honesty from you guys, especially Cannon, I mean that's why we're here after all. Still, it is funny to me to hear the way you talk about certain things being bad writing and indicative of an author who was mostly winging it while writing, when most of those things are actually indicative of the opposite. I agree with preferring the overall tone of Zero, but UBW is so good at weaving threads throughout the story, that you don't realise until the end or a rewatch. Similar (though not at all the same scale) to AOT.
