Bakugou was a kid who was raised with a flashy, powerful quirk, with all of the praise from those around him for it - in the mind of a four year old, it wasn't hard for that attention and praise to reflect off of his love and respect for All Might and for victory into such a heavy complex. It was equally easy for that same aspect of his life to trigger a response to Deku throughout their childhoods - in his mind, Deku being quirkless meant that he was weaker and therefore underneath him, which not only fueled the superiority he felt with such a strong quirk, but ignited that endless anger he channels towards him when he can't wrap his head around Deku reaching a hand out to him. Deku had a hero's spirit from the start, but it was easy for Bakugou to read that instead as Deku thinking he was weak and needed to be saved, or that he looked down on him. Mix that all together with Deku getting a quirk from All Might, losing to his peers when he enters school, being kidnapped, Kamino, failing the exam, and the explosive personality he has naturally as a side-effect of his quirk, and you get this one emotional, violent, and extremely necessary fight. Like Tivy's comment highlights, this fight is extremely important and formative for both their relationship as childhood friends/rivals as well as for Bakugou himself - Bakugou finally gets to channel out some of the anger, regret, frustration, confusion, pain, and feelings of inferiority he has been stewing on for literally years, and Deku gets an actual look for once into Bakugou's mind, not only at the emotions he hides behind explosions but at the way he sees Deku and his actions. In the grand scheme of the series this episode/arc of the show can end up feeling a little mild down the road, but it is sooo so so important for jumpstarting the dynamic they're really meant to have, and slaps a big ol' healing band aid on their relationship. This is kind of the second starting line for their relationship with each other - I'm glad yall enjoyed and am excited to see how you feel about future episodes :)

This fight is sooo important for these two. It’s not just about rivalry, it’s Bakugo finally letting out all the guilt he’s been carrying since Kamino, blaming himself for All Might’s downfall, and not knowing how to deal with it except through anger. He’s always acted like he was above Deku, but deep down he’s scared of being left behind, especially now that Deku holds the power he once worshipped. And Deku doesn’t meet him with ego or spite, he meets him with understanding. They’ve always pushed each other but never really seen each other until now. This moment cracks their whole dynamic open tbh. It’s emotional and long overdue, but it finally feels really honest

Such great character development from Bakugo! All Might indirectly fanned the flames throughout Bakugo’s whole life making him have a superiority complex by never losing a single fight. Theres a fan theory that if Deku was wearing his iron soles he would have hit Kaccan with that kick and won the fight. If Deku had won then Bakugo would have became a villain in order “win” and become the strongest, because if he cant be the strongest hero then maybe he could be the strongest villain. Its a cool theory cuz its fits his lifes narritive of always winning and being the best.

Finally they understand Bakugo on their own terms. Long have we waited. this patreon chat section is really good. just endless positive vibes, high engagement, and people are even safeguarding character stuff and things that are to be revealed, which I found annoying previously. It's so much better to let them experience the character themselves than tell them who to love, who to expect the most of, etc. Of course, it's so much better to be a part of a channel when the reactors are really engaged with the content. These guys get MHA, it just connects with them, after all the jaded shows and pessimistic shows like The Boys and Invincible, you can tell this is a breathe of fresh air. Bakugo is a well-written character. He has inferiority complex so he always tries his best to overcome it, whether in academia or combat. Ironically, he became the best among people his age but he never feels like he’s good enough because his problem is a mental health problem, not physical. Coupled with his tendency to bottle up his emotions, All Might’s retirement and him failing the provisional license exam, he literally became a ticking bomb until this ep. It’s inferiority complex masked under superiority, because people with this complex need to be better than others to feel good about themselves. Usually Bakugo is the best at everything (before UA) so it’s fine, but Deku is a weird case because even though Bakugo's better than him in all aspects, he still received help from Deku so he felt insecure about him and decided to beat him up so Deku/his insecurity would stay away. Yet Deku stuck close so imagine how shitty Bakugo must’ve felt lol. It’s a very complex and layered relationship between both of them.

The author confirmed that Katsuki is a sensitive and emotionally intelligent kid, and because he’s sensitive, anger and physical fight are his coping mechanisms to deal with mental stress. It’s unhealthy (like Deku said) so it’s good that he finally figured it out and begins to heal and grow. Now he’ll still be spunky cuz that’s who he is (his explosion quirk & his mom’s teaching also influence his personality) but without emotional burden so it’s pretty much cute & funny atp. He’s a tsundere who prefers to hide his emotions lol

I love the battle between Deku and Bakugou so much. Win to save, save to win is such a great way for them to understand one another, and answers the question Bakugou was asking himself which was “is how I admire All Might wrong? Is Deku’s admiration right?” Throw in that sense of ending All Might’s career, and it makes sense that Bakugou was spiralling. All Might essentially gave him the answer of “neither admiration was wrong, but it wasn’t the whole picture. You need to both win to save AND save to win”. I'd just like to take a moment to talk about Izuku and Katsuki's fight in ep 23, as it really cements how complicated their relationship is. There's more than just hatred, jealousy, and disgust. There's Izuku's awe towards Katsuki's philosophy of always winning, despite his distaste for Katsuki's foul mouth and hurtful words. There's Katsuki's fear of Izuku seriously surpassing him despite viewing himself as better than Izuku (and this applies to both before and after Izuku got One For All, because before, Katsuki was angry that Izuku kept sticking close to him despite getting beaten up and pushed away all the time, which made him think that Izuku had REASON to do so, and he thought that reason was because Izuku was looking down on him, like he seriously had a chance of surpassing Katsuki). There's also Izuku's feelings about Katsuki being the closest to him when they were young. While All Might was first and foremost the hero he admired and idolised the most, there existed someone near him who was, to Izuku, almost as amazing as All Might because of the way he lived. Katsuki, influenced by All Might, vies for absolute victory, not just in fights, but in academics, in physical abilities, in smarts, in battle sense, in combat. He wants to be THE BEST in everything that he does, and unironically, he's GOOD at nearly everything he does. You'd think that he's at least emotionally constipated, but this episode and many other moments before have shown us that he's actually FAR more emotionally intelligent and sensitive than he portrays himself to be. And Izuku sees all that, SEES all the effort Katsuki puts into being the best, WATCHES how he improves steadily as a hero from when they're young, WITNESSES his struggles and victories on the battlefield and REGISTERS Katsuki as someone who he looks up to and admires just like he does All Might. It's obviously not quite to the same level, but he admires him far more than any other passing hero. His admiration is born out of their lived experiences together, their childhood that he can never forget. It's not the same fanboying he gets into when he sees a hero he knows in real life. His admiration for Katsuki goes much deeper, so much so that he views him as his "image of victory", the first person he thinks about when it comes to winning a fight TO WIN, and not just TO SAVE. Izuku's feelings regarding fights have almost been followed by "I need to save" and not "I need to win", because that's what he's channeling from All Might. He admires how good All Might is at saving people, and focuses slightly less on the aspect of All Might having to win a fight before saving people. Because he always does that anyway. But Katsuki fixates on the part where All Might always wins and because he does, Izuku sees in him the intensity of his desire to win. He sees that Katsuki is channeling a different aspect of All Might, and he emulates that same part whenever he wants to or is forced to prioritise "winning" before "saving". But what he emulates is not All Might's version of "winning to save". It is Katsuki's version of "winning", because to Izuku, All Might is the incarnation of heroism, of selfless sacrifice to save others, while Katsuki is the one who he views as the incarnation of victory. Because Katsuki always makes sure to win. And that's what Izuku has been exposed to since he was a child. Just like he shouts during their fight, Katsuki was someone amazing who was closest to him. Rather than All Might, who was a legendary figure in a TV screen far out of his reach; who he could only admire as a hero on a worshipped pedestal, Katsuki was RIGHT THERE next to him, and he could relate to him better, see him better, watch him easily and REACH him. And that's why he admires him so much, even though he dislikes everything else about his personality. It's why he stuck so close so long despite the bullying from before, and the nasty words from way back. He WANTS to keep watching Katsuki - his incarnation of victory - win, just like he wants to watch All Might keep saving people. And Katsuki realises that through this fight. That Izuku wasn't just sticking to him like glue despite Katsuki pushing him away because he was looking down on him. He thought Izuku was sure that he could surpass him, and since he admitted that he never knows what Izuku is thinking, he was afraid and angry (mostly angry on the outside) that Izuku's insistence on sticking close alluded to some kind of confidence that Izuku was eventually get better than him. His thought process was "Why is this pebble always chasing after me like he SERIOUSLY thinks he can surpass me? Does he have something that can make him better than me, even though I'm supposed to be superior to him?" (This is where his superiority and inferiority complexes mix). He then thinks "How dare Izuku the pebble try to surpass me for real. Does he think it's inevitable that he will get better than me at some point? He's treating me like a distant goal he'll eventually catch up to, and I can't have that. He must be looking down on me because he thinks I'm not good enough to always stay ahead of him! I can never allow that!" (This is where he lashes out, refuses Izuku's well-meaning help, and is generally an asshole to him to make sure he doesn't get in his way of being the best). It's his way of masking his fear of Izuku surpassing him and his developing inferiority complex. It's part of the reason why he pushes himself so hard, especially after high school starts. Because when Izuku got into UA, and got himself a quirk, suddenly all of Katsuki's previous fears, which were unfounded, become an inevitable sequence of events. He loses to Izuku in their first training fight, he has to watch as Izuku improves by leaps and bounds, he has to compromise for the first time in his life as he and Izuku work together to beat All Might during their final exams, then he gets kidnapped by villains and has to be saved by Izuku and his other classmates so that All Might can defeat All For One, only for All Might to lose his powers for good in that same fight. Then the last straw was when he didn't pass the provisional license exam but Izuku did, and his feelings exploded. He needed an outlet, and Izuku was the obvious target and most convenient choice since he had to confirm his suspicions about All Might and Izuku's relationship anyway. Their fight at Ground Beta really encapsulates the complexity of their relationship. Even after writing such a long comment analysing and explaining it, there's still so much to unpack, so many unspoken feelings to delve into, and so many details that could have been missed from the dialogue or interactions. It took me at least 10 watches for the fight to make complete logical sense in my head, plus insight from other like-minded fans and discussion threads. Everything that Izuku and Katsuki says sounds like emotional word vomit on the first watch, so it was a bit of a struggle to REALLY understand where they're both coming from. It only becomes clear what they're talking about when you immerse yourself in their characters. Now that I do understand them, it's always bittersweet to see this fight unfolding. And it's amazing that Horikoshi did what he did with the two of them so far. I can't wait to see your reactions to what happens down the line, because their story is far from over.

People thinking that always confused me because there's like zero motivation for him to become a villain. It's made explicitly clear before that point that he wants to be like All Might and its pure admiration. Not to mention Sasuke didn't even turn bad until way later he just wanted more power to kill Itachi. He's shown multiple times refusing to kill people or do anything that involves bystanders unnecessarily until he learns the truth. Like seriously all Sasuke did after getting captured was try to run away and then train for 3 years 🤣

I love that fight so much man, the emotion behind it, the animation, just how much it means for both Deku and Bakugo, I think its probaby the fight I've rewatched the most in the whole series, I love that part where Deku does his little spin and then his foot barely misses Bakugo's face and you see the lightning touching Bakugo's face, such a cool little detail. When in the first season the league of villains first attacked, I was so anxious that shigaraki was going to seriously hurt the students or aizawa. When all might came, I genuinely felt relieved and like the characters on screen thought "everything's all right bc all might is here" And I don't think any other superhero has ever evoked that within me. A lot of other superhero fights are about fighting more than saving. With captain America in the movies it's always (for me) "coolio he's gonna kick some butt now" Even when he sacrificed himself in the first movie it was more about him than the people he saved. With all might I always feel like "oh thank god the people are save now" Instead of " The villains are going to be defeated now" Idk how to say it but this is my attempt for why I like all might better as a hero

Calling Deku a simp completely misses the point of who he is. His dream since he was a kid was to be a hero like All Might. Growing up with Bakugo, who had an incredible quirk and real potential to become a top hero, Deku naturally looked up to him. He saw the potential. And it's not just ab admiration, it's literally just who he is. He’s someone who studies and analyzes everyone, not just Bakugo. He's obsessed with anything heroism, so that makes sense. He's also kind (sometimes too kind). He doesn’t put himself first (which is his biggest flaw) and that's why it’s so easy for him to forgive people who hurt him. For him, what’s truly unforgivable is when someone intentionally causes harm to others.

The performance in this episode by Nobuhiko Okamoto, the VA for Bakugo, is one of my favorite performances. The voice cracks, the vulnerability he brings to Bakugo is just so real and hits me every single time. The "I am weak" with that voice crack, man.
