I hate that the subs don't do the Zeke-Eren scene justice. If you listen to exactly what Zeke says he's not saying "your father" to Eren as the subs suggest. He's actually saying something closer to "that father" and not quite willing to acknowledge Grisha as his own father. But he's also not entirely denying that he has some connection to Grisha either, or else he'd actually say "your father" to Eren and leave it at that. That slight difference matters quite a bit as Isayama's wording of Zeke's comment like that was totally intentional, and to give a clue about his relationship with Grisha without saying too much about it.

Armin is great, but I would choose Erwin 1,000 times over. I understand Levi's choice though, because Armin is so young and full of dreams and hope, and Levi knew that Erwin wouldn't want to live in Armin's place, he was already determined to die, almost as if he thought he deserved it. He let Erwin rest and give Armin the opportunity to live his dream.

Whenever I watch that rooftop scene the thing that gets me is how hard Mikasa fights for Armin's sake like up until this point usually you'd only expect her to act like that over Eren, it really shows that even if Eren is her #1, Armin is pretty much just as important to her. But what a generational batch of episodes, man... it's crazy that S4 has you feeling like this for basically the entire season.

Right on. Eren's interest was really never in the ocean itself. His dream and his insistence on seeing it more so came from a place of deeepp indignation and pride. He is aware of the possibility that the sea might exist and he is incredibly defiant and resentful of the fact that he doesn't have, more importantly that he is not being allowed, the freedom to see it and confirm that for himself. He doesn't actually appreciate or care about the beauty it possesses or the opportunities it suggests the way Armin does. While they’d more or less set the same goal, it was ultimately for two vastly different dreams. The fundamental difference between Armin and Eren is that Armin dreams of seeing the ocean whereas Eren INSISTS on seeing it. Despite the similar objectives, there still remains an inherent difference between the root of these two motives, which is exactly what eventually leads to such a stark contrast and deep chasm between their respective ideologies and methods of pursuit.

I love Erwin but I always tend to favor the "mains" that's why I rooted for Armin in my first watch.. but as you've mentioned, there are lots of layers in here. What if there's also that hope in Erwin that he has a chance to be revived, that's why he's so confident to take the risk with the suicide charge knowing there is the serum... Even to this day a lot of people debate what would have happened had Erwin been chosen but with the events of s4 (no spoilers) i struggle to see how he would have fit into the storyline...Armin imo, and this is my 4th full rewatch, will always make more sense to me and he proved it multiple times. Thing is (and they were basically saying this in the discussion) that Armin’s immediate dream is to see the sea, but actually he has a general curiosity and love for the world. For Armin there is always more to explore and learn. Whereas Erwin’s dream is limited to a particular circumstance related to his father’s unjust death. Erwin wants to know the truth specifically as it pertains to the basement and humanity, after that, he has nothing else.

These are some of theee crying episodes, and Carter and Cannon both are so real for their reactions throughout - I remember reading the chapters with Armin's and Erwin's plans right after they came out, and I can tell you I was in shambles then, and still am every time 😭😭 Also love to have the Gek girls representing the Armin support squad this time around, cuz while I didn't want to lose Erwin either of course, having everyone so solidly on team Erwin last go around was so sad for me lol 😫😫 Armin was also always my favorite, and love that he's Riley's too! + heavy agree that Eren needs Armin, and they're somewhat each others balancers. Armin's consistently been the one to help bring Eren back to himself throughout the series, which is a feat that others have failed at before, and I believe would be muchhh harder with his loss. The way I see it is that while Eren embodies humanities hope, Armin has always embodied hope to Eren, and in being such he's fundamental to so much more than him as well. (On top of which being Levi's acknowledgment of the importance of his hope in of itself) p.s. love to see all the analysis in not only the reaction but the comments too - people are cooking here, and I don't think I have a whole lot to add that hasn't already been well stated 🙏🏻 Big shoutouts to Marlo, Moblit, and all the other lost scouts too though :((

Has anyone else listened to the official CD dramas? I always listen to Erwin and Levi: Crumbled Castle Gate drama on YouTube following episode 18. I find it wraps up their relationship perfectly. You can tell just how much loyalty and respect they have for each other. If you haven’t heard it I would recommend it for Erwin and Levi fans.

@Oscar While I do agree that Levi's decision was heavily influenced by his affection for Erwin (and would've been in either scenario, as is inevitable) I disagree that there's any 'objectively' best decision for humanity, as was showcased through all the characters in the episode and their reasonings. Both really had their pros and cons, and while its true that Armin lacks Erwin's experience (I mean, he's less than half his age), Erwin was a man at war with himself and his own intentions, whereas Armin embodied a selfless hope that could be better pictured put to use for a brighter future

@Mike It does still kinda make sense in English too, but because they had to alter it to fit the language it just doesn't really hit the same - In Japanese the pun is more so off Eren's name, in which the Japanese pronunciation of 'Jaeger' sounds similar to the Japanese word for 'house', whereas in English its just a heavier pun on the house itself ('eaves' being like a roofs overhang, and 'dropping' because Berthold's flinging them around ofc, lol)

My headcannon is that Zeke sent the Duck to scout (pun intended) the Bertholdt/Reiner side of the battle. We saw that it charged from the opposite side from which Levi approached. It probably saw the suicide charge from a vantage point (rightfully confused because no one can really anticipate such a plan from Erwin) and got back just in time to save him.

Nobody's going to read this, but I don't get how neither Zeke nor the duck saw Levi approaching (or at least the titans falling); it's not like the titans were out of his peripheral vision, and the smoke wasn't anywhere near him before Levi started killing them. Why is he killing them if it will only make his approach more obvious? Also, while Erwin's charge gives me chills every time, I feel like it's a huge tactical failure. I can't say that he should be expected to come up with something better than a gamble here, especially with the limited time that they had, but I feel that his gamble didn't have the best odds. If Levi was spotted (which he probably should've been), it could easily be over. However, I think a lot of viewers are under the impression that this was the best possible plan. Regardless, AoT is still my favorite show and likely will be for a long time, despite some of my gripes with it. While they're certainly still gambles, I have some alternative decisions that I feel could create better odds of succeeding: - This would require a different plan from the start, but I feel like such an important mission (that they had time to prepare) should've had the help of the Garrison and Military Police. Having the additional Garrison resources (lifts, cannons, more gas, more horses, etc) and soldiers from both regiments would've introduced a ton of new options and potential failsafes. - Have the Scouts spread out MUCH more, meaning Zeke would have to spend more time throwing boulders. With this, more Scouts could potentially survive while Levi is approaching. That being said, the horizontal spread of the Beast's throws is still insane lol. - If the Scouts are more spread out and still firing the signal flares, you could potentially have Eren throw Levi towards the Beast Titan, as long as it's towards one of the flanks. The signal flares might obscure him and he'll have covered a much larger distance from above, before anchoring to any of the titans. - Eren could use titan hardening to make a defensive barrier that would protect the horses and recruits, but this would require more communication and time. While this likely wouldn't be able to protect the horses, the Scouts could also just take shelter in any potential basements of buildings, simply stalling in hopes that Eren and gang can succeed on his side of the wall. Both options are risky though, and require a lot of faith, time, and communication. - If the other regiments are involved like I previously suggested, there could be squads set up at nearby zones to help with supplies or reinforcements. With this, the Scouts trapped by Zeke could stall while reinforcements arrive from behind him. At this point, they could reemerge and if their horses haven't all been killed, they would be surrounding Zeke from multiple sides.

Man I binge-watched this rewatch during the past couple days so that I could be here when this three episode batch was uploaded and I'm SO glad I did. I feel like this has been said a ton but I can't overstate how much fun these reactions are. The girls are an absolute treat. Bradlynn and Eve have made me laugh on multiple occasions and I love how locked in Riley is. When the end discussion comes around, each of them brings a unique perspective to the table and they pick up on things so well. Of course, I can't forget the guys. I always look to them when foreshadowing or a reveal happens and their reactions are priceless. Carter's emotions and Mckay's smiling were a highlight this time around, literally two ends of the spectrum lmao. You guys made me have a new appreciation for aot and I'm really thankful for that. This show is so unreal sometimes. The stress of being trapped in a desperate situation, and watching the sacrifices these characters need to make just to give humanity a fighting chance is so intense. They don't fully understand the enemy they are up against, yet if they fail this mission, it spells the end of humanity. I felt sick to my stomach the first time I watched this arc. Attack on Titan is truly a one of a kind show.

To me what stands out the most is that both Armin and Erwin had dreams, but as Erwin said in a previous episode, his dream was more important to him than humanity’s fate. So while Levi had to convince Erwin to die, Armin had to convince Eren that he would live. Despite his dream, humanity was always more important to Armin. He wasn’t controlled by his dream. I like the argument that Erwin would be unpredictable after reaching his goal, but to me the choosing Armin is just more poetic and ties the narrative and ideas that were previously shown better. Saving Erwin was objectively the best desicion for humanity. Armin has great potential but right now is not close to Erwin's talent. The reason of Levi choosing Armin is a selfish one. i love the erwin vs armin debate because even though i one million percent believe armin was the 'right' choice, i always love to see peoples different perspectives on the situation. for me, the two tiebreakers that really lean me towards armin are in these two fights on either side of the wall this arc. firstly, the outcomes. armin's plan got them the colossal titans body, erwins plan did not get them the beast titan's body. that prize was armins win. seemingly the only reason erwins plan didnt succeed was because the cart titan took the beast titan with them and escaped. remember, they'd already put it together that the cart titan is sentient multiple episodes ago, so it is in fact their lack of foresight that lost the carts body. this part is my own opinion, but i believe that armin, with dreams far beyond everyone else's perception, would have been able to see that far ahead secondly, the outcome of those fights really speaks to me in a metaphorical sense about erwin and armins characters. yes, the situations were different, but im speaking purely metaphorically this part. erwins plan was a suicide charge, ended in literally almost everybody dying, and the 'dream' dies with erwin. armins plan ended up in every person living except for him, and the hope he passes onto the living keeps the 'dream' alive. the decision episode is one of my favorite in aot, if not my favorite. such an interesting and tragic situation

Even the mentorship interpretation doesn't ring true to me, I don't think a mentor/apprentice relationship works between bc they have a mutual respect between them. The point where Armin inspires Eren's dream really makes me appreciate Isayama's writing. In truth Eren is not that committed to the sea. Even though Eren and Armin became great childhood friends because they shared the dream for "the world outside the walls," but the root of that dream has some slight differences. Armin possessed a curiosity for knowledge, and held onto the thought of "I want to see the sea." On the other hand, Eren viewed it as, "The sea obviously exists, but we don't have the freedom to see it" - and he felt indignation towards that. He was not interested in the sea itself.

LONG TANGENT/ANALYSIS (sorry):I love these episodes, I could go on and on about this. I love Erwin’s character, he’s probably my top three characters but even I could see picking Armin was the correct choice. Erwin’s story was done and picking Armin creates a better story bc it allows other characters to grow in Erwins absent, eg. Hange and Armin and many more. I’ve always been fascinated by Levi’s choice and I think this analysis on another patreons, Dr Sophie Darling Reacts, comment section did it best: By DepressedSoggyWaffle “During their final conversation Levi saw how tormented Erwin was as he grappled between his duty as a commander and his selfish desire to abandon the mission and go to the basement. By that point Levi had already developed an inkling that Erwin’s motives might not be as noble or righteous as he may have once thought. But it wasn’t until that very moment, that Levi truly understood just how deep Erwin’s obsession ran, how mercilessly this vice-like dream was suffocating him, and how much it was consuming him. As his long time friend and comrade, Levi saw that Erwin’s misguided motives made him someone who was pitiful rather than someone resentable. Even when Erwin, for the first time, showed hesitation and childish selfishness at a moment when his soldiers desperately needed him, Levi’s initial look of absolute disbelief and incredulous ‘huh?’ quickly changed to a face of genuine sympathy and commiseration. During a rare moment of vulnerability shown by an old friend who’d always been defined by his stoicism, he was understandably beyond stunned. Cursory words of forgiveness can be easily given, but it is difficult to endure the punishment needed to truly earn forgiveness. Forgiveness can be given to even the unapologetic if they act pitiful enough when asking for it or if the person who gives the forgiveness is charitable enough, but sinners who ask for judgement in earnest and allow themselves to be at the mercy of punishment, are usually the ones who are sincere in their remorse. This is what sets forgiveness apart from judgment. The surmised purpose of ‘judgment’, is to bestow punishment on those who commit immorality and evil. As a result, to the remorseful sinner, judgment is an object of hope that alludes to a possibility for redemption through punishment, something that Erwin not only desired, but also secretly believed he deserved. If we want to tie in Armins’ “Those who can’t sacrifice anything, can’t change anything” philosophy: Erwin sacrificed his dream in order to change himself. He wanted to finally shed the righteous commander mask he’s been hiding behind all these years and for the last and only time, be a true commander who is truly fighting for his soldiers and humanity, not his own goals. Notice he does not parrot his usual ‘dedicate your hearts’ line. He never actually was sincerely dedicating his heart to humanity’s cause. They were empty words and he knew it. By throwing away his script and mask, he was able to finally be honest not only to his soldiers, but also to himself. The final factor that made Levi decide to let Erwin go was when he saw that even at deaths’ door, Erwin was still obsessing over his dream, still unable, probably unwilling, to let it go and make his peace. Many misinterpret the final rooftop scene as Erwin slapping Levi’s hand away and rejecting the syringe but that definitely wasn’t what that scene was about. He subconsciously raised his hand because in his delirium, he was reliving the moment his obsession first began and reflecting on the day he asked the teacher *that* question. Surprisingly, it’s actually the first time it’s fully revealed what Erwin had even asked that day. It’s been teased again and again how he’d raised his hand in class in his childhood, presenting a very controversial question, but what that question exactly was, was never explicitly revealed to viewers until this scene. It really sits among some of the most powerful and emotional moments in this show imo. Before leaving for the mission, Erwin himself had admitted that he had no idea what he was going to do once he fulfilled his dream of seeing the basement. Whereas on the other hand, as Levi had seen and heard for himself back when he was eavesdropping in on the trio’s conversation, a bright-eyed Armin was still full of passions and dreams to be drunk on. Armin was ‘looking’ far beyond the walls, all the way to the ocean whereas Erwin’s vision was limited only up to the basement. A dream that stops at the Zhiganshina basement just simply isn’t enough to lead humanity towards the direction in which they now need to go, which is beyond the walls and forward. Erwins’ dream was a silent source of self-torment for him while Armins’ dream is a bright beacon of hope that shines for everyone. Levi understood that letting Erwin go was the greatest mercy. He would no longer need to suffer under his dream (that honestly had become more like a curse at that point), or live every day wracked with guilt, or continue to shoulder the heavy responsibility of making the most difficult decisions for everyone, while still having to endure being called a devil or a demon. No matter the outcome, he’s always somehow made out to be the bad guy. If his ideas fail, he’s blamed for the results and when he succeeds he’s then criticized for the means. From the start he was stuck in an unfortunate position where he would never truly be able to please any of the expectations that are being placed upon him. Someone in the comments for another video put it quite nicely - ‘If Levi had brought Erwin back, it would have been a betrayal and act of disrespect to his conviction’. For Erwin this was an incredible moment of long awaited emancipation and relief from a huge burden he’d been shouldering for most of his life. Erwin wanted to make his peace after a long struggle and even if it took a lot for him to get to that point, and even if he himself was still wavering inside, at the end of the day it was still his personal decision. Going against it would have been the same as dismissing his determination and resolve. Erwin himself already knew what the right thing to do was from the start but he just needed someone to give him that final push and affirmation that it was time to let go of his childish vice. With his wish fulfilled, he would have lived life an empty man left with nothing because he no longer has a dream to chase. Even if he had survived, it’s likely he would have never been the same commander again without that drive. This is just wrong. You did not understand why Levi chose Armin. One, it was not plot armor; this wasn't a sudden asspull that served no narrative purpose; this was set up this entire season, with Kenny's speech and Levi listening to Armin's dream. To simplify it as just plot armor is dishonest. Levi is letting his friend rest after he finally gave up his dream and chose to save humanity. Erwin had a lot of guilt over the things he had done, and Levi knows this. Bringing up the fact that others have died and were sacrificed doesn't go against what Levi was thinking in this moment. This choice doesn't go against his speech at all. Erwin's speech is about trusting their comrades to find meaning in their deaths, Levi choosing to bring someone back with a hopeful vision, and letting his friend, who was struggling with all the people he has killed, finally rest. SMH after all this time, people still don't understand it and just call it plot armor

Levi's Choice scene is so jammed packed with information its crazy. "Everyone has to be drunk to keep on going" Erwin's and Armin's dreams are what kept them drunk to keep them going. Erwin's dreams have pushed humanity so incredibly far but it ends at the moment of knowing the truth. So a new goal must be made. Armin dreams of exploring the world. That dream will drive humanity forward, as it embodies the courage to overcome any obstacle in its path.

I don't even think he would've been unsatisfied. I think the problem was that he is continuously on a cycle of death that he's forced to live through, and it's certainly challenging to come back to life after being prepared to die. He would've gone to the basement and then found the answer he was driving towards in life. After that, he would've been mentally prepared to die once more, but no motivation to base his entire existence on, because they found what he was looking for. Armin, however, wanted to see the sea (not only confirming there is civilization outside the walls, but looking at the 'endless' pool of water that exists between them.)

Like the whole time we see how clearly messed up they are mentally and that they didn’t want to do this, and until this point the girls have still liked Bertholdt. Should've been Erwin. It was a selfish decision based on emotions. When the fate of humanity is on the line, you don't have time for Armin to maybe mature into an Erwin. Plot armour saved him because the main trio had to survive. It would've been better writing (and much harder to write the future events) if Erwin was chosen and Armin was no more.

No matter how many times I watch this show and see these episodes I still tear up and hope I’m in some alternate universe that things go different lmao. The cool thing is that we’ve only seen Levi fight this epically against an intelligent type once, the Female Titan. So when he violated the Beast Titan it made it extra special and extra worth it. We all knew Levi was the best fighter but still at the time fans weren’t sure if he really could take on the Beast, especially after it was declared by Reiner that he was no match. So it was a good thing we had some downtime from Levi in season 2 to make his comeback all that more goated.

Damn. What a freaking force of nature. Surrounded by mostly beings more powerful than him, he charges in like a beast, taken down by a beast. What a hell of a way to go out. Not a single scout backing down from the most horrific moment of their life. That speech could shift mountains. Never gets easy watching this for the 55eleventh time. In a way, he listened to life itself and accepted obstruction. The angels and demons in him just clashing over his destiny and he finally made the choice. Imperfect yet always eloquent. Always fearless. Always ahead. Even though he fell first during his charge, he died last. It shows how much he was hanging on until he finally gave up when he needed to give up. Levi sending his respects to him, bowing at his feet the same way Erwin bowed to him when they first met, Erwin smiling in complete surrender to Levi’s words, to give up on his dream and die… is such a stunning scene. “Standing on this mountain of corpses, I have quite the view.” Standing on a mountain of tears, we have quite the view! Erwin the GOAT Smith, May you rest in hell with the rest of the devils!

Connie Springer says "That could be Eren's house" it sounds just as if he said "That could be Eren's Yeager". Eren's last name is Yeager, in the Japanese katakana it’s written as イェーガー. In English we would pronounce it as ye-ga-. One word for home (家）is pronounced "ie" or for english speakers something like "iye". "Ga" (が）is a particle in Japanese used to indicate the subject of a sentence. For the purposes of pronunciation, Eren's last name and "House + Ga" is spoken the same way. Isayama made a pun. Hence why Connie found it so funny.
