2025-04-20 09:31:58 +0000 UTCi feel like i'm always in these comments sections with my korea lore so why not keep going? this episode always makes me emotional for one reason and one reason alone: the real life parallels. i don't know how familiar everyone is with the Sewol Ferry Tragedy that took place in Korea in 2014. it was a massively broadcasted tragedy and for good reason–every adult involved failed the victims and the survivors as well as all their families: it resulted in the impeachment of the president at the time. i won't go too much into the details, there are loads of free documentaries out there that i'd highly recommend you all to watch; but basically, a ferry carrying hundreds of predominantly high school students capsized and sank on its way to Jeju Island from Incheon. there are heartbreaking videos you can find online of the students on the ferry, sending 'i love you' messages to their parents, making jokes about how they'll be fine and see each other soon; playing games etc. the kids on board got told to stay put whilst the captain and some of his crew escaped; the kids put all their trust in the adults and they more than failed them. they left them for dead. out of 476 passengers, 304 died (mainly high school students). knowing this context, the scene of the surviving students in aouad filming messages for their families and vowing to take revenge on the adults who failed them and their school...it hits HARD.

The Prez Nam-Ra and Gwi Nam etc are immune and not undead they still alive but do get zombie seizures as we see with Namra this episode. On Jo pretty much says its this episode how some people will be immune. The virus enhances them, Nam-ra is basically what the scientist dad wanted for his son.

The scene where Nam-ra and Su-hyeok tie their hands together with a red ribbon is also a parallel to the tragedy, as many civilian divers reported finding students who had been tied together with red ribbons.

Maybe it was homage to The Walking Dead. It's even more ridiculous when you consider military service is compulsory for young men in South Korea.

2025-04-16 23:31:34 +0000 UTCAlso I’m pretty sure I read that the part where they’re video taping themselves is a mirror of an actual ferry incident that happened in South Korea in 2014. Ferry capsized and the captain and crew were charged for fleeing and abandoning ship. A lot of the deaths were high school students. There were clips found that the high schoolers took on the ferry before it capsized. Just like this story where the young ones are in danger and the adults are failing to help them.
