So disappointed at the Mikasa hate. Wish this was actually a rewatch reaction (which it isn't because we can't hear you guys' thoughts), instead of a 1st aot reaction (the girls's).

Daniela Fangueiro

Thanks GeksDeluxe! Loved the comparison to Harry Potter lol

jrnoodles

Damn i love how Ryley is cookin! she remembers all important details

Avital Lockhart

I think they just forgot to hit unlock cuz for them its not locked but man i've been waiting

Handles

can i get that i paid for or what, i need something to watch when i eat my dinner later

Matt

why can't i get access to the episodes 12-15 that are out when i just got access to the previous anime ones

Matt

And at some point I can relate girls’ felling about Mikasa (despite that on my first watching I adored her), cos sometimes I also got annoying what it’s seems she doesn’t have her own personality and only obsessed with Eren, but trauma made a unbreakable bond between these two!

Vlad Lena

Kenny is a goat primarily, because without him we wouldn't have Levi.

Vlad Lena

Massive season 4 spoilers It’s important to note that when grisha is talking to Shadis at the end, that’s AFTER the grisha we see in memories of the future. Meaning after seeing the rumbling, after asking Zeke to stop Eren, Grisha learns Carla dies and decides to give Eren the power. When he says “this child is not like you” you can tell how scared he is. He also says “avenger your mom. I know you can” he LITERALLY knows he can

Daniel Geary

Reminder that Eren and Mikasa are only 15 in the show, their relationship isn't meant to be romantic at the moment, pretty sure neither of them know how they see each other. Their moment was kinda weird but it's not like Eren 'rejected' her, he said he would wrap the scarf around her as many times as she wanted. The Author has also said before that writing romance was very awkward for him and that he wasn't too good at it.

Skyz

Monday drop 15-17 is about to be generational

Yeah return to shiganshina is so boring, they should just skip and go straight to season 4

Sean Carroll

Peak Scene when Historia hits Levi

Zipzzty

If they keep the 3 at a time routine, they cliff hang ep 17 haha maybe that's what they're going for.

Paul Durbin

Man next week is gonna be so boring

Paul Durbin

That shakes me to my core, because I'm a sucker for the world weary compassionate wise kind of energy Uri exhibits; the notion that it's an addiction of some sort and not necessarily utterly and entirely transcendent hits something deep in me

jared

Yes to all of this wow

jared

Also that was a *great call on the snape comparison for Keith!

jared

Loll!

jared

Spoilers 👀 Keith and historia each reflecting on their impotence in the face of the larger forces at work, foreshadowing eren's experience of that on such a grander scale that is to come; seeing each of their fervent determinations just utterly humbled; chilling; it struck me so much this time round! Also Uri, Frieda, and Rod; especially Uri and Frieda, being confident and determined they could inherent the founding titan's power but remain themselves, and being completely overtaken by the king's will; I guess that's been a theme throughout the show, of being determined and believing in your own power not being enough to really change things, but, there's this deeper sense of, everything I'm doing is leading to this inevitable outcome...not just "I can't change anything," but also, like, even this incredibly deep expression of my individual will is actually playing into, and part of, this grand cosmic design in ways I wasn't aware of, was not intending, did not want, and could not stop no matter what; it's such a profound defeat

jared

Kieth backstory getting me as emotional as one piece back stories sheesh

Vongola, 10th

I am slave to these Patreon drops 💯

pearl

yeah agreed. It's really not necessary to bring up how "terribly" they adapted her to defend her. Never read the manga, but never got the impression she's one dimensional Having to bring up the manga differences as a means of defending her kind of admits that there's something wrong with her character even though there really isn't. That being said if they decide they don't like her, I'm not gonna be mad at that, I'll just disagree lol

kiiturii

Historia best girl, let’s goooo

Austin Kinney

Carter smiling throughout the entire Kenny episode was mood. It's episodes like those on a rewatch that elevate this show from great to one of the best.

Pham Hung

The Mikasa hate is a little sad. The comments here have gone at length defending her, but there is something to be said about how Mikasa's family-oriented character motivation (family-oriented meaning that Mikasa's thematic contributions to the narrative is centered around the importance of family and home) is brushed aside as flat and 2D when in actuality there's nothing fundamentally inferior about that compared to motivations and actions of other characters. Like Armin or Eren's motivations may seem grander, but Mikasa's role in the overall story is just as crucial, just in a different way. That plus the manga/anime differences etc etc. Luckily, from this point forwards, the anime sticks to the manga in terms of Mikasa pretty closely. The worst of it was Uprising arc and some stuff in Stohess.

dimitris athanasiou

Mikasa was certainly about to kiss him in that moment. Her entire speech was basically leading up to her admitting her love before she died. You’d have to be pretty dense to not see that coming

Sean Carroll

after hearing the girls end discussions, and seeing the comments , i had to go back and watch that scene in season 2 ep 12, cuz sometimes i feel i’m watching something completely different from everyone else . but when did mikasa confess her love to eren? and when did he reject her? in that scene she was just thanking him for everything he’s done for her cuz she thought they were gonna die. and in return eren said “ill wrap your scarf” implying that he wasn’t gonna let them die . so is just me or am i missing something?. i dont even think both eren and mikasa have even realise their feelings for each other at this point in the story. cuz a lot of shit is going on , aot isn’t a romance anime and anime like aot where its fundamentally action and psychological based , you would be lucky to have some romantic elements.

𒉭

It’s an expression used to emphasize a point 😭 meaning you’re always very likely/eager to bring up a topic

Nami Swannn

first to say?? brother that's all this comment section is.

kiiturii

That's definitely a possibility. Eren has been going through it these last few episodes.

Matt Haloostock

riley might not talk as much but every time she does, she is COOKING

ash

Men will literally try to become titans instead of going to therapy (Kenny)

Hunter Snider

I Recommend that you handle all your real life stuff first before jumping into the next episodes so you can enjoy them to the fullest. The rest of the season is all out nuts and you may accidentally binge it

Sean Carroll

It’s because Mikasa is ALWAYS jealous whenever a girl talks to Eren. There was even an episode in season 2 where she was jealous because Hange was talking to Eren 🤦‍♀️

Laolu Aluko

Great episodes. We got some answers, but there is still a lot to unravel. I feel like Grisha had to have either gotten his memories back at some point if he turned Eren into a Titan. It's interesting that Keith knew Grisha. I never would have thought that he would sabotage Eren's gear. I don't know if it was malicious though because it seemed like he was trying to keep Eren away from trouble? I'm excited excited watch more. I'm going to a book event starting tomorrow through Sunday so I don't know if I'll get to watch any episodes before Friday, but I'll try and catch up if I fall behind.

Jenny D

As much as I don’t ship Eren/Historia their natural banter is honestly much easier to get behind than this one moment that imo could be easily read as platonic :\ I think the anime watering down Mikasa’s personality was a huge disservice to whole character, as well as her relationship with Eren

Nami Swannn

Ill always be the first to say I hate the anime adaption of Mikasa’s character (and the uprising arc in general) and how they removed half her personality and replaced it with « Eren », but at the end of the day it’s all a subjective opinion and they’re experiencing only the anime so let’s chill out a bit on the shipping talk and their opinions on them. Anyways loving the discussions, please keep them going!

Nami Swannn

Brig saw people praising him for bringing nuance to the Mikasa conversation and decided to come back and be a menace. Brother, sure lmao

bondbond53

NIcely put. I agree with you to a point. I'd like to know whether the Manga explores Rod in a bit more depth; I know the anime is quite faithful, but I've heard of instances where they gloss over things that are more complex in the manga. I'm not sure that I believe that Rod (when we meet him) is working against the first King. It's clear that he and his brother originally did want to get rid of the titans, but after seeing his brother and daughter get subsumed by the first King's spirit, I think he realized his resistance was futile. When Historia presses him on why they hadn't used the founding titan to eradicate the titans, he has this whole monologue where he realizes that the first King must have had some knowledge that necessitated humanity's being subdued by the titans and that it was his duty to worship the King. I think that he gave up on his aspirations long ago because he thought that he just needed to put his faith in the King. But I agree that I don't think he had bad intentions; he was just working with what little information he had

lilrigbus

mikasa was one of my favorite characters even on the initial watch without hindsight. i never really found her annoying, but i can understand what the girls are saying. i think i just personally don't really register the exaggerated trope-y moments of jealousy. it feels like an anime humor thing to me, i guess. i totally respect all opinions, but i'm still glad to see a lot of the comments mirror my thoughts. like you said, there's a lot of underlying aspects to her character that i think easily get lost in how crazy this show is/gets. i can understand why she's hit or miss to some, but i do personally think she's far from one-dimensional. just my thoughts

Kiyoh

Would've made so much more sense to end at Ep12 and have the next batch as the S3 Part 2 first ep.

Terry C

Brig Andrus

You guys should do a season 3 review after you finish, like you did during your first reactions.

Man Lit

Eren hasn’t reciprocated???? He said “I’ll wrap that thing around you as much as you want.” Come on 😂😭

Chrissy

I don’t think it’s necessarily a hindsight merchant thing (for everyone). Just an opinion thing. At this point in the show we’ve seen love between Eren and mikasa and love between Ymir and historia so I personally cannot understand the shipping haha. There’s people who still ship them even after the ending though. Which is why it’s not always hindsight for some people it’s just their preference which I don’t get 😅

Chrissy

Is that ever explicitly stated - that Historia could resist the First King's vow? I don't remember ever hearing that.

marco

Also I think it was tough love. Like “stop blaming yourself!”

Chrissy

I definitely agree. At first he definitely seems selfish but those flashbacks are short but imo say a whole lot.

Chrissy

these three episodes were so fucking good. such good backstories and dialogues. and Eren saying he was just the son of a special man without knowing yet what he did/will do😂

Madjoe

I enjoy watching the boys and their little smiles when shit goes down since they know the outcome. Especially when the girls cook up some theories and they give those subtle smiles knowing they're close to the point.

Benjamin Knock

kiiturii

Sean ur not as smart as u think u are. Rod is a good man who mad one bad choice for himself and one other person got killed for it in order to save humanity. You probably like Eren more than Rod and that says a lot about you... Rod literally watched his entire family becomes slaves to the founder and he vowed to Uri that he would break the cycle which he legit almost accomplished. Read my comment above this one, I dont feel like wasting my time explaining again. Rod is incredibly smart and figured it all out basically. The end goodbye

Jed

honestly I thought this was pretty obvious, on first watch it's fair enough to think Rod was a bum, but from the flashbacks you can clearly see his intentions. What I don't like is him forcing historia into that role of inheriting the founding titan because he was too scared to do it himself

kiiturii

Rod couldn't give the power to himself. The reason it had to be Historia is because of her heritage. Rod is a full royal while Historia is only half royal which would allow her to break the vow. Rod is literally a good guy lmfao people dont realize this. Bro legit never lied to Eren or Historia, the worst thing Rod did was let Kenny kill his mistress but that was for the greater good as Rod needed Historia to live for humanity while the mistress was literally a slave... Kinda ironic huh that the royal needs a slave to do their bidding... almost like... Oh wait this show is a masterpiece my bad so no spoilers haha

Jed

We ain't reading that essay 😂✌️

Conk

Theres no spoilers there bro

Jed

Correct. I keep replying to comments I'm seeing on here with people taking guesses or theorizing about things in these episodes but you are 100% correct. Its literally all about what Kenny says. Everyone is a slave to something... Rod watched all of the people in his life with their own thoughts and feelings be stripped away in mere seconds after receiving the founding titan. Its like an entirely different person appears after they first awake. They all share the sentiment that getting rid of the titans is the correct choice but once they receive the power they are enslaved to something/someone (we cant talk about yet) but yes overall that man was terrified and I would be too. Kenny worries about the same thing that if he "inherited it would he spout all this nonsense all the time"? in reference to keeping peace in the walls and hiding from the outside world and titans. Its very interesting to see how much truth Rod told Historia and Eren about their world and why Historia must eat him, but even he was enslaved by something in trying to find the right person to inherit the founder which made him lose sight of his morals and thats what made Historia switch her mind. Also Rod actually almost completed what he promised Uri, that he would find the right person to inherit the founder. I don't think people realize that Rod figured out the solution, if Historia got the founder there it would have completed everything. She could have broken the vow and done what was necessary. Eren isn't the chosen one or special in the sense of bloodline like someone else is... ehem... (my goat) or like Historia. Eren is just lucky Historia chose otherwise ngl. However his determination is what makes him special and lets Historia believe in him (also attack titan helps there a bit lol)

Jed

Wanted to bring something up that I almost never see anyone else talk about, and that's that I think Rod Reiss was actually on humanities side, and was actively working against the will of the first king. Throughout Rod's and Uri's flashbacks, we see multiple times that Rod attempted to convince whoever the founding titan was, to take action. We also see with both Uri and Frieda, he had made plans with them in advance to oppose the will of the first king, however as soon as they take the power they no longer see it his way. I also think this is why he insists to Historia that he should never become a titan. Most people dismiss this as him just trying to save his own ass, and Kenny even says so in the episode. But if we consider that he has been plotting to save humanity within the walls from the will of the first king, it all makes perfect sense. Uri and Rod saw the issues of the world, and begged their father to take action, but he wouldnt and they just couldnt understand. We even see Rod temporarily imprisoned while shouting at his dad. They then made plans that when Uri would take the founding titan, he would be different and definitely do something about the titans. However we see that once Uri transforms he doesnt keep his promise to Rod. We then see Rod on his knees talking to a maid saying "you're the only who understands me now", implying nobody else in the family wants to go against the will of the founding titan. Rod then proceeds to have as many children as possible so he has other candidates so he doesn't have to inherit the founding titan himself. Again, before Frieda takes the founding titan, we're shown Frieda promising Rod that she won't "lose to the ghosts of our ancestors". Seems to me like he basically raised a bunch of children and tried to ensure that they would be loyal to him and his cause even after they inherit the founding titan. When he tries to turn Historia into a titan he also tries to impress on her that she should trust him over anyone else. Which again, can be taken as him just being a selfish manipulator, but it also makes sense in the context of "please trust me over the will you're about to inherit". Furthermore, when we see him lick the spinal fluid, he seems relieved and says "Father... Uri... Frieda... Wait for me, I'll now..." which to me implies he actually wanted to become the founding titan since he knows he would be able to be with them again through the memories he would inherit, but he refrained from doing so all his live because of his struggle against the will of the first king. Meaning he isn't all that selfless, since he has been holding off on one of his greatest wishes for the sake of humanity. I think the story purposefuly places him in a role that normally would be filled by a character who only has his own selfinterest in mind, a ruler who is afraid of losing his control over the population and will do anything to stay in power. However, there is multiple inconsistencies with his actions if that truly was his motivation. In the meantime they sublty show us hints that he actually has different motivation, and if you reevaluate his actions based on those motivations, it all actually makes sense imo. Almost every discussion on Rod Reiss I've seen everyone just seems to think he is a bum, a coward, a selfish manipulator, etc etc, but I actually think his motivations weren't selfish at all and he was actively trying to free humanity from the will of the first king. Without spoiling anything, imo it is very interesting to think about what would have happened if they had reached the basement before encountering Rod Reiss. This post ended up being way longer than I planned to, so thanks if anyone actually bothered to read it.

Oromis

bondbond53 I hope you have the best day ever ur comment was hilarious lmao :)

Jed

Correct, Keith's spark was lost when he failed to get what he wanted because he was a slave to his own pride and to Carla. So when he saw Eren fail over and over but keep trying until he finally did it even with broken gear he realizes Eren IS special because his spark never went out not because of his parents but because Eren's his own person just like everyone else and some people fail until they do great things while others fail and give up like Keith does himself. So he lets Eren pass as Grisha would have wanted and lets go of his inner hatred for Carla moving on with his life and letting Erwin take over showing his trust in the new generation of "special" people.

Jed

Yes that is exactly correct. You can take any character in this show and look at their life and their morals and realize they are a slave to something or someone. Everyone is a slave to something... You can apply the same theory to real life as well. The show is extremely deep :(

Jed

@lololol no need to be so aggressive broski, you are acting as if i insulted your mom or something. i just said they made her character more in line with what a stereotype of a Japanese woman would be, I never said that she was one to begin with, otherwise they would need to overwrite her entire character. let's just close this discussion here, I don't like being attacked by strangers on the internet

Goat

I can’t stand the Mikasa hating nor the Eren/Historia shipping hahahaha but tbf being a hindsight merchant makes that easier so I won’t blame the girls rn 🫶 But don’t forget about YMIR that girl was down badddd for Historia

MissJodles

@Goat How am I twisting your words when I literally addressed what you said. You said that the way the anime portrays mikasa as being "obsessed" with eren reinforces the japanese stereotype of women. Im saying that it doesnt... I 100% agree that the anime had a different way of portraying Mikasa and at times, made her character more shallow -- since in the manga she was more complex and seemed to care a lot more about other scouts as well (not just eren). However, your main point is that her character = japanese stereotype which it clearly isnt. If it did reinforce such a stereotype then mikasa wouldnt be one of the strongest soldiers of mankind and a badass nor would characters like hange and historia, who are shown to be smart and brave soldiers, exist as well. Your point should have been that Mikasa was more complex in the manga --- which i AGREE, but pulling out the "japanese stereotype" card out of ur ass shouldnt be how you analyze LMAO but nice try bro, u got ts next time

lololol

okay alr cause YOU CANNOT skip those end credit scenes

Thelcia

FUNFACT(not so fun):Mikasa’s character in the manga is far more complex and developed than what we see in the anime. In the original manga, she has a much more defined personality and plays a more active role in the story. There are numerous scenes where Mikasa is shown engaging in conversations, offering her own insights, and displaying a range of emotions and thoughts. many of them were cut from the anime adaptation. Yet she stll is mikasa, not saying she's a whole new character in the manga but the differnce is def there. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FUNFACT NMBER 2: I wanted to comment this on your previous posts, but do you remember that scene between Eren and Historia in episode 1 of season 3? Wit Studio also cut the entirety of their conversation. It’s actually one of my favorite interactions between them. In the anime, their exchange feels much shorter and less impactful, but in the manga, it’s far more detailed and emotional. In Chapter 89, the original scene has a lot more depth to their dialogue, and you really get a better sense of their connection and what they’re both going through. It’s such a shame that so much of that was left out of the adaptation... Once you’ve finished watching the show, I highly recommend checking out a comparison video or something similar. Even though the anime is leagues better.

Thelcia

young grisha looks like ezio auditore lol

they said they already watched it a week ago

@Toothie - Why? Everything they said is quite true. Mikasa as a character has had basically zero growth in comparison to other characters in the show. Compared to someone like Jean, Historia, Eren, etc. Mikasa has essentially been the same since season 1. Infact, I'd even go as far as to say she regressed as a character. Everything that comes out of her mouth now is either "EREENNNNNNNNNNN!!" or something Eren-related.

Terry C

he wrote romance in aot and honestly it has a lot more than I’d expect, but bro didn’t wanna draw them kissing fr LOL 😭 what he did instead still works better imo bc if they kissed right there the story would’ve taken a wayy different turn and obviously aot is perfect the way it is rn

Yeah and people still turn their nose at MAPPA’s production of AoT and view WIT Studio with rose coloured glasses

kuza

I read that Isayama was super embarrassed writing romantic plotlines, but I do agree that in Japanese culture they really love their subtle way of saying things through metaphors and whatnot, which is what’s mostly used to convey Eren and Mikasa’s relationship

Goat

@lololol Wow what a way to twist my words.. but nice try I guess

Goat

peak kenny send off, into historia officially becoming queen, into the reiner-"beast titan" scene, chefs kiss

kuza

Keith didn’t sabotage the gear out of spite, he did it to save Eren from becoming a Scout and dying, for Carla’s sake. He was trying to save her son from the death he thought awaited him. He realized after he sabotaged the gear he couldn’t influence Eren’s path at all because he’s just a bystander to the story. People often misinterpret Keith’s motives as he did it out of spite for Grisha or Carla.

rayman

Loving all of the post-episode discussions for every episode 🥹 there is so much to talk about in these episodes

Ollie

Next week is gonna be absolute insanity I can't wait for the next couple batches. Keep up the great work everyone! 👍

Grae (Formerly known as Huewi)

I get it a bit, because she does kind of baby him a little bit and can appear overbearing, but if you pay attention to Eren I think he needs it as he often has no regard for himself. In this episode's example he's too busy yapping and obsessing about titans as usual and not eating + taking care of himself.

Ollie

Ok I’m back for ONE last yapathon 😞 in the season 2 scene right after hannes gets eaten and mikasa pours her heart out to eren, eren’s response is often interpreted as him not giving a shit. Mikasa telling him those things was basically her accepting that that was their final moment and she was about to give up. If they had kissed right there and did nothing the titan would’ve chomped them both. Instead her words snapped eren out of his breakdown (as always) and reminded him of his resolve to protect mikasa (and armin; same thing grisha keeps saying too in eren’s memories) so he gets up and punches the titan with his bare hands. He tells her that he’ll wrap the scarf around her forever as many times as she wants, and imo that holds more weight than anything like “i love you” or “damn mikasa you’re fine af” 😭 when he saved her first he wrapped the scarf around her and they both know that this sentiment / action holds immense weight for both of them. Also being mere children who joined the military so early after losing everything, they can’t really process the concept of being lovers and how you should act under those circumstances. Mikasa doesn’t expect eren to treat her like his gf & thats why she’s not embarrassed when he doesn’t. Eren, mikasa (and armin) understand each other better than viewers think they do.

Lime

Crazy how from here it just ramps up and up and up

hugoruix

Either you’re joking or you are totally downgrading his character

Sean Carroll

It's such a big deal cause he virtually never smiles 🥲 and he needs them now that he's lost yet another important person in his life.

Ollie

And when it comes to Mikasa and Levi, they joined the scouts and gained purpose in this messed up world. But Kenny, having his special Ackermann ability, had no direction and did the things that he did before joining Uri.

Ollie

I didn't like him either! But I agree, I think he does become a better character when his story comes full circle and you understand him.

Ollie

Thank you for saying this! It’s my biggest gripe with the anime adaptation. They really doubled down on her “anime-ification” that takes the nuance out of good female characters and turns them into glorified accessories to the MMC. The manga presents her so much more sympathetically. Even the way she’s drawn is so different and makes her feel more complex/real. I gotta say though I was a little disappointed with the girls here. I understand criticisms of Mikasa but I can just go to reddit if I want to find undisguised sexist vitriol towards her. Like damn ladies, you were doing so well giving honest, measured critiques.

Toothie

It makes a lot of sense lol

Matt Haloostock

lol I’ve always referred to him as the Snape of AOT and I love that the girls were on the same wave length.

Dani G

Tbh, I never thought about it until the girls said it, but it's a great comparison

Matt Haloostock

Just to add some context, Mikasa snaps at Eren during dinner because he was remembering eating Grisha, but this detail isn't directly said in the anime. I don't remember exactly how it went in the manga, but Grisha was Mikasa's family too. She didn't want to think about him getting devoured by his own son. That's why Eren apologizes to her

Matt Haloostock

After AoT, I think it would be a great idea to introduce Vinland Saga to the girls. They would enjoy it immensely.

C2-H5-OH

I think Kieth wanted to become commander to make a change, but, for the purpose of getting recognition from Carla. However, when he finally got promoted to Commander, Carla got married, and his spark disappeared, and no change was made. He was a slave to Carla

Henry Huynh

Carla lowkey a baddie poor Keith man

Ron Jackson Jr

i still like her

Ron Jackson Jr

And Connie! Two underrated kings!

Dani G

It’s crazy how this show just gets better with every watch. It truly is a masterpiece.

Dani G

I love the comparison of Shadis to Snape because I thought the EXACT same thing the first time I watched! This episode just completely fleshed out Keith’s character in the best way. Carla’s speech about Eren always gives me chills. 🥹

Dani G

I always interpreted Keith breaking Eren’s gear as trying to protect him from going outside the walls because he loved Carla. But then he changed his mind after seeing how determined Eren was. Keith is the one who told him to switch his gear. If he was just doing it out of spite I don’t think he would’ve told him to switch. He would’ve just failed him.

1999

I feel cannon and Carter on episode 3x10. It hits SO different during rewatch! I actually cried during Kenny’s death scene!! When Levi asked him why he left him, it was the most vulnerable I think I’ve seen him even from later episodes! It was like he was a kid again. And I never really understood Kenny’s motivation and why he changed so quickly to supporting Uri etc but now I see the bigger picture AND you don’t really realize how large of a role his character plays in the overall theme of the story until the rewatch either. Also the fight scene with Rod was great and Historia’s story was goated! Once again I didn’t really appreciate it as much the first few times. But with the show over it really gives me a different perspective. I think that’s why Levi’s scene with Kenny also hit bc you just know he’s been and will go through so much loss. Also there was some humor in this episode, I think it was really great overall and probably shot up in my episode rankings!

Melissa Huynh

I really didn’t like Kenny on my first watch either, but he really grew on me on future watches. He’s a really well written side character. I love how Eve loves the most morally bereft male characters. 😂

Dani G

Keith wanted to hit Carla with that incel speech but Carla said ‘No❤️’

bondbond53

oof

jemmy

this animation studio really messed up mikasas character. they add random scenes of her being obsessed with eren and damn near codependent and changed I believe almost 15 of her dialogues to just the word "eren" as well as taking multiple manga scenes that were of eren and armin and changed them to eren and mikasa. very odd studio that cuts out and changes multiple things that screw up ppls perceptions of characters and the show

aubrey

TheSauceGuy

Oh my God, that quote by Shadis at the end lol.

BECAUSE I WAS BORN INTO THIS WORLD

when? In what context?

Yesss

Savannah Balderas

they’re literally siblings lol

A_Daddy Daichi

wonder if they watched the ep 12 end credit

idcjayyy

Yeah hearing the girls talk down on Mikasa hurt my soul 😔. To me its an older sister/younger brother vibe where parents die and the oldest sibling needs to take responsibility. I view it more as a familial bond partnered with the fact that they are like 14-15 so ego doesn’t get a WHOLE lot in the way yet.

Jimmy

I'm so excited for the next arc, let's go 🥳

Chosos Wife

Yep I I’m pretty sure in s1 alone they removed 17 separate instances of dialogue from her and replaced it with “Eren”. She has so many characters moments of clearly caring for all the scouts and sadly the anime removes a lot. It’s a similar anime only issue with Sakura and Orihime in bleach.

Mitch

sasha and connie were separated at birth🙏 i can't see them as a couple lol😭

beannie

Yea one of the biggest fumbles of aots anime is the amount of content cut out from the manga during this arc

Mitch

the little smile and thanks from Levi to his new squad 🥹🥹

A_Daddy Daichi

i cant wait for these next episodes. i wonder how they are going to split them up. i kinda wished they just binged it all at once

rene

I love love Kenny's epsiode, I also just noticed after introducing Uri, it's Uri's voice we hear calling Kenny when levi finds him, in the previous ep it's levi's own voice, loved the direction of the ep. Just shows how much Uri meant to Kenny. Kenny is such a fascinating character. He just goes to show that having empathy and being able to be compassionate is such a privilege. In a dog eats dog world like the one Kenny lived, showing mercy just gets you killed. So he had to become this ruthless person, unable to ever let his guard down. Yet, deep down, he was actually yearning for something different, for a more compassionate view of the world like the one Uri had. When he realized that he was never gonna be able to see the world that way he actually lost his reason for living. Another great point is that at the end, when Kenny gave up his dream he became what he always wanted, a compassionate selfless man. It probably surprised Levi that Kenny didn’t save himself by utilizing the serum. Instead, he entrusted it to Levi before dying. From Levi’s perspective, the Kenny who always survived by being selfish actually did something selfless in his final moments. Kenny's line of "everyone is a slave of something" always hits me so very deeply. Living in a world that sometimes feels so harsh and indifferent, we will always need a reason to wake up every morning and keep moving forward. It's so simple, yet so powerful.

Carla!! Best mom. (My comment from 2 years ago still stands!)

Betty H

are the gek boys watching the ncaa championship game?? who yall got!!!?

Braulio Patron

Huh I never noticed until this rewatch but Kenny and Uri’s relationship has a lot of tie-ins and mirroring to Levi and Erwin’s. Just noticing the assassination attempt to the devotion and supporting their persons. It’s interesting. Also, when Kenny finally understood that Uri was just a man who had a dream and even he was a slave to something, eg. making paradise

Kyra Sun

Yeah I feel it gets forgotten a lot that mikasa promised that she’d look after eren. She loved and respected Carla so right after she died, that was her main goal in life fr

A_Daddy Daichi

hes already special because he was born into this world

Mckay kinda lonely on the right :(

The thing that strikes me most about Rod Reiss and the royals is they DID actually want to eliminate the titans. I've seen this show so many times, but I never really thought about it. The memories Historia gets of him speaking to his father and Freida show that he didn't believe in the whole 'paradise' thing. Freida saying she wouldn't lose to the ghosts of her ancestors also proves she wasn't a believer either, which proves how much the vow renouncing war really controls the founding titan's holder, because Freida would later speak in defense of the vow. For all we know, none of the royal family, even Uri, bought the whole 'paradise' deal until they received the power themselves. They were as much captives as the rest of the people of the walls, forced to watch their own family turn against their own wishes as they received the founding titan. It makes me think that the reason Rod refused to inherit the founder is because he was terrified of what it would do to him after seeing his father and brother both become brainwashed by the first king.

Flubbedsquid

the japanese stereotype would be making mikasa a stay at home wife who only lives to please the husband... Mikasa is literally the strongest female in this anime - and that says a lot + the anime has an agenda of showing how women can be stronger/smarter than men thru characters like historia and hange... but according to u, i guess that doesnt matter because mikasa is obsessed with the person who saved her life, took her in, and grew up with. I don't understand how it would be unreasonable for Mikasa to feel overprotective of her only family member - especially since we know that she has been traumatized by that before. Analysis vs. grasping at straws is different, but nice try

lololol

Last time my comment was deleted I think, even thought there were no spoilers( I just wanted to say that Rod's monologue about God is one of my favorite and it gives me goosebumps. Adding on top of it, Kenny's and Keith's episodes and monologues are MY FAVORITE. Best episodes for me, so much philosophy, so much depth and relatable words. Being drunk on something and Keith was drunk on being the chosen one. I love love these episodes. I can relate to both Kenny and Keith so much. Keith messed the belt up, cause he thought Carla wouldn't have wanted Eren to become a soldier. He was trying to help, but saw that Eren is the chosen one Grisha told him about.

S Moonchild

fill in the blanks kenny is to uri; as levi is to erwin; as ____ is to ____

lololol

In the manga, Levi actually chokes Historia by the collar until she's almost unconscious. It's why Historia felt the need to get back at him by punching him after she became queen. You should read the Uprising Arc in the manga. It's mandatory reading if you insist on calling Shingeki no Kyojin is a masterpiece.

Eve's commentary cooked with these episodes

Kwadwo Boateng

Anytime anyone disrespects any of the three ackermans I get so pissed off lol, I’m a Ackerman glazer to death

Slizzle

The manga's version of Mikasa is more mature, composed and less obsessed with Eren. It is a shame the studio decided to portray her this way, since it solidifies the Japanese stereotypes of ideal women being obedient and obsessed with their partners or love interests

Lime

When mikasa and eren were younger, eren’s mom kept telling mikasa that she had to look out for eren and stop him from making hot headed decisions. Likewise she kept telling eren that he had to grow up and protect mikasa. These ideas got engraved onto both of their personalities and how they interact with each other. Eren sees himself as mikasa’s protector and he’s always pissed when she’s the one having to protect him instead. Likewise whenever mikasa feels like eren is being radical or losing his cool she tries to cut it down kind of like playing the role his mom would. Seeing the things they saw at the age of 8 & onwards would naturally prevent them from forming healthy reactions to their emotions.

Lime

Eren is special to me that’s enough 🤭

Audreyldo

I think his worst sin is cowardice in foisting the Power of the Titans on Historia instead of taking it himself. I don't think Rod Reiss is a good guy, but I don't think he's exactly villainous either. He's just sort of a weak/pathetic character.

marco

W title. It's getting real juicy now. Can't wait to see the girls' thoughts and reactions to the rest of this season and next, and to see how you guys react on your second watch.

Dakota

It sounded almost like Brig was thinking those things for the first time, or on this rewatch it is what he has picked up. I was glad

Gunder

Buddy they are just locked in it’s good

snoobcat

You guys are doing extremely well so far and I have been impressed with your abilities to follow such a complex story so well. My only recommendation is to please keep an open mind about every aspect of this story and all of the moving parts in it. Your guys feelings about Mikasa, while slightly valid, are missing complexity and nuance. Attack on Titan is a 1 of 1 story that will stand the test of time, and I have unfortunately seen many people be too surface level and not grasp the depth of the story telling. I have been very impressed at you girls so far and hope you keep open minds and use everything the story gives you to form your opinions!

Gunder

IS HERE!

Ladnon

I'm glad Brig stepped in for my girl Mikasa and hopefully the girls come around to her character by the end😭

Emily Nolasco

My personal interpretation for Keith sabotaging Eren's belt isn't that he did it because he hated Grisha. Carla never wanted Eren to join the scouts and Keith was sceptic about Eren being "special" enough. When Eren proved himself achieving balance with the broken belt, Keith saw in him a person superior to himself, a special person. He didn't see himself capable of changing the inevitable faith, Eren joining the scouts. As he said, "In the end I couldn't change anything, i'm a mere bystander". I love this and Kenny's episode btw

Markel Etxabe

Wow I’m shocked. No reaction from any of them other than Eve with the Beast Titan about seeing Reiner and Bertholdt

Micah Seer

Despite rod being far deeper of a character than initially thought of he is still certainly a bad guy

Sean Carroll

Isayama is a masterful writer

Gunder

those last two episodes are so great and love hearing the girls thoughts and the boys 2nd watch revelations

fyre

Love the love Jean gets from the girls, he is my favourite one tbh

Captain Hero

Thank goodness Brig brought some nuance to the conversation about Mikasa and Erens relationship in the end. While the way Mikasa is adapted to the anime is unfortunate, there is a lot of nuance to her and Erens bond that it looks like the girls either overlooked or don’t care about. Nothing in this story is cut and dry. Everything has multiple layers to it. Hopefully they have more open minds down the road and form complex opinions, because they have been incredible so far in this series

Gunder

I think the Power of the Titans needs to be clarified to the girls. Rod was a pure titan who mutated into something bigger than the Colossal Titan; he wasn't like Eren or Annie, so he had no will of his own - just like Ymir didn't choose to eat Reiner/Bertholdt's friend. Heck, Connie's mom would eat somebody if it were presented to her. Doesn't make her an evil person. Just a pure titan. Kinda sad that this misunderstanding forced the conclusion that Rod is a "bad guy" to them when his memories show that he was telling Historia the truth.

marco

Attack on Titan stands out as a masterpiece not just for its epic moments and plot twists, but for how it gives depth to even who you consider as minor characters (obviously they’re not) At first watch, episodes about characters like Kenny, Uri, or Keith might seem like detours from the main story, I mean I remember the first time watching these I wasn’t as interested—I was too eager to get back to the main plotlines, like finding out more about Reiner and Bertholdt, or the identity of the Beast Titan. but on rewatch, they add emotional weight and build a richer, more connected world. These moments make the story more meaningful and complete.

Leely

Rod Reiss or kid Eren?

Alex Ramirez

(Haven't finished the video yet, will delete if i gets talked about later I just know I'll have more comments for the other episodes lol)

hman70

Wish you guys had been able to discuss a bit the memories Historia got when she finished off Rod, understand why it happpened, but they don't get revisited by the show really. They're kind of like the capper to Rod's whole story he's been telling and gives some confirmation on the pieces he's been telling the truth about (i.e., he begged his father, then brother, then daughter, to free humanity from subjugation by the titans but each in turn broke their promise. He turned to an affair with Historia's mother Alma in his grief, saying she's the only one who can understand him, and eventually she along with his entire legitimate family were killed, leaving him mostly broken by the time we meet him in the story)

hman70

WIT Studio when I catch you with how you adapted Mikasa from the manga.... I swear to God
