My only constructive feedback is that is if you do end up watching the series, the friends that know the lore should not spoil anything by continuously revealing the lore of the series during the reaction. I can't speak for everyone, but I'd rather watch a raw reaction and have the lore explanations come during the post discussion.

They recently remastered OG DragonBall because the orginals were all on tape and the colour's had degraded. I understand peoples hate on the english dub, I've watched it in both, there's something special about the original japanese and also something special about the english dub and personally I love the DBZ eng dub with Bruce Falconer doing the music on the tv aired version in Canada. Highly recommend starting with DragonBall and then DBZ,

If you want to experience the story from start to finish dragonball is the place to start. Starting at dragonball z (150 episodes in) is a crime as you have none of the original story to go off when watching the dbz and the characters won’t mean as much as you go. The rest of the dragon ball series prior to super(which even that still has its problems) has the same problems as naruto and the other big 3 but worse. Even this movie changed the story from the original movie where it was just broly having beef with goku for crying too much as a baby.

For example Ghibli movies have some of the goofiest characters in any anime but the stories in those films have so much nuance to them and can be appreciated by children and adults alike. There are so many themes and ideas being communicated either as a direct focus of the story or being implied indirectly in between the lines. Not much of this is present in "cartoons" such as DB or OP. When I was a kid, I disliked anime like Dragon Ball and One Piece the same as I do as an adult - because I like stories or characters with more value to them other than light comedy or simply being narrative vehicles for face value common sense wisdom... so these shows usually end up no more than skin deep as far as I'm concerned. And that is also fine. There is an audience for fun and light comedy as well. People sometimes just want to relax and laugh. Nothing wrong with that.

I can't speak much for the characters in those, but in dbza I'd say they are the very least on par with the originals. Thats why there is a jump cut to Bardock with tons of battle damage before getting nuked. Can recommend.

Yes the original Dragon Ball is dated (and might not be where a lot of Dragon Ball fans started watching), but it's canon and if you want the full lore and experience of the DB universe then the correct order is definitely, Dragon Ball, then Dragon Ball Z, and then Dragon Ball Super.

However, I think this kind of anime is the reason why SOME people get to be anime haters in the first place. Because this one is basically a cartoon mostly made for kids, which is a big reason a lot of people misunderstand anime in general. Especially when some anime reach this level of planetary popularity, the casual uninformed audience will think this is what ALL anime is like. Speaking for myself, being an adult, when something is as ridiculous looking as this or One Piece - especially, I just can't take it seriously and it annoys me beyond being able to pay any attention to anything related to its story or its characters. The design of the characters, the way they talk, everything about the world and how it works together is so extremely immersion breaking for me that it just seems stupid, unbelievable and a waste of time. But I realize fun and entertainment is subjective, so of course there will be tons of people that enjoy all kinds of things. This is just not my kind of anime. I dont find the art STYLE appealing, I think its childish, unserious, even sometimes artistically and technically lacking. But considering it's target audience are kids, it makes sense. The fight scenes in this one are at times impressively ANIMATED, and at times averagely so IMO, but overall very well made. So after sharing such an opinion, obviously I should be prepared to take all the hate for having one and all... since, its just another day on the internet. But, not every disagreeable opinion you see on the internet is bait or call for an argument. Some people just like different things and it should be ok to say it. We don't have to fight about it, ok? This movie is great and the animation is masterclass but I feel like Broly is less of a menace now than the OG Broly movie. And there are callbacks in this movie to the OG one. The story is weaker, I'll admit, but you should definitely check the OG one out - that's the Broly I grew up with.

OG DB is just as essential to DBZ as OG Naruto is to shippuden. I would go as far as to say that OG DB is better than DBZ IMO. It’s an adventure, that doesn’t focus on power and more on the core of what makes Goku the character that he’s is down the road

That's just one of many example's. My best recommendation is to watch OG DBZ and skip filler like they are doing with Shippuden.

There's a canonical timeline, and it makes a lot more sense if you watch them in order. Also Each show has a different feeling that makes them unique. OG Dragonball is an adventure story, it follows a young Goku discovering who he is and follows him from a young boy to a young adult. DBZ is all about Goku discovering his power and is where Shonen Jump made it's name as a power-up fighting genre. Super takes it beyond, where power is the name of the game. It takes Goku and Vegeta to the next level where you see them in this movie. As someone who's been watching these shows since the 90's, this is the way.

The music too is far more faithful to what Dragon Ball represents as a whole. The only problem in Kai is the fact the official releases changed the score by reusing the Shunsuke Kikuchi ones after Yamamoto's OST was judged to be plagiarizing in some tracks. And the problem with this is that they just poorly placed these Shunsuke Kikuchi tracks, so it basically ruins absolutely everything. Instead of the meticulously well placed DBZ shunsuke Kikuchi ost, it basically feels randomly placed in Kai. If they're able to put their hands on the version with Yamamoto ost then Kai would be a more than decent pick, far better than the original english dub at least. Overall I do agree that the original japanese DBZ would be the best though. The performances and the soundtracks are phenomenal.

It has that Miyazaki innocent aspect, lots of good drama and epic fights. 0 nihilism. It's basically us seeing Goku grow up and the world of Dragon Ball through him. The show starts as an innocent adventure and becomes gradually more serious until it peaks in DBZ. You can't fully grasp the seriousness and scale of DBZ without witnessing the older more innocent times of early DB first. It has one arc that's a bit dragging but otherwise it's peak adventure and some of the best fights in the whole franchise are in there. This being said, I know you guys would probably watch it in english since that's often the default choice in the US, and I'm sure you're tired of the constant dub vs sub debates and that some of you have strong emotions in favor for the dub, so it's a complicated thing to argue about but still I'd like to play advocate for the sub. As someone who grew up with another dub too and who also was reluctant to give the sub a chance at first, I now consider the japanese voice acting in Dragon Ball to be one of the best I've heard in all of anime. The way the actors are able to pour so much emotion into the dialogues and especially the screams is absolutely unbelievable. Only the Masako Nozawa VA of Goku can feel weird at first in DBZ, I get that, seeing a buff man with a childlike voice, but that's just like how anime is in general, the initial weirdness makes place for enjoyment once you are open minded enough and give it a chance. And the music adds another layer on that, the Shunsuke Kikuchi soundtracks and the DB / DBZ openings are as iconic as the show themselves. They give the show a whole different dimension in comparison to the Faulconer score. Much more of a mix between spaghetti western, adventure and sci-fi. Not to diss the faulconer one, it has its merits but it changes the vibe of the show completely into something very different to the original material. One can only dream, but it would definitly be a lot of fun to see Brig, McKay and Jack react to the sub for the first time.

Most people started on Dragon Ball Z, but if you wanna start at the very beginning it would have to be OG Dragon Ball. There's not many who started on Super or GT but it's not that big of a crime to do... However, there is another option... Dragon Ball Z Abridged. DBZA is a different experience whether you've watched DBZ or haven't. It's a lot of fun, although the first 10 episodes are a bit rough when it comes to editing (I don't mind the jokes people will say "that didn't age well NERD EMOJI" towards)

Seeing this in theaters when it came out with the crowd cheering at moments was one of the best movie theater experiences ive had. Nostalgia plays a huge part on enjoying OG dragon ball/Z/and kai. But its still good if u just dont critique it expecting it to be a masterpiece. Its a power fantasy epic. Thats all. Has a special place in my heart though and always will.

I understand is different, and it's old, but the OG characters get introduced there and the story takes its form in the latest arcs, you cannot skip it and start with DBZ. Honestly I don’t even like to consider Super canon. I believe it was created with the sole purpose to sell merchandise. If you’re going to watch anything it should be DBZ, og db is cool but it’s insanely dated. Even DBZ has some of the most abysmal pacing to ever exist but it’s still infinitely better than super. DBZ kai is basically an updated version of DBZ that fixes the pacing issues and updates some visuals BUT the soundtrack is significantly worse and the voice acting doesn’t compare at all to DBZ. Also Kai has a bunch of censorship problems as well. TLDR - Dragon ball Super is garbage and Kai is an inferior version of DBZ imo.

2025-01-25 23:30:59 +0000 UTCHeinous how even the guys "familiar" with Dragon Ball skip over actual OG Dragon Ball as something necessary to watch. OG Dragon Ball is criminally underrated. After Emperor Pilaf, it quickly settles into what Dragon Ball would become known for (albeit with more comedy). The tournament arcs are great, Red Ribbon is fun, and by the time we get to King Piccolo it's basically the same tier as early DBZ. Just annoying as OG DB fan to have the story which is the basis for everything else ignored as unnecessary just because it isn't so popular.
