I agree for the start of one piece, but not just that it was more so for kids but moreso that Oda didn't want to drive these darker plots or deaths when he was writing the earliest parts. I also just think he was finding his footing as a writer as well, where the start shows so much potential such as the backstories and heartfelt moments, but definitely has a lot of problems or undesirable traits that get ironed out as the series goes on. But I definitely don't think One Piece in general is a for a younger audience, especially once you get past the start. In fact I think One Piece is a show that's more likely to be people's favourites as you get older and aren't a kid. It's our experiences that shape our humanity, and Oda's ability to make us feel so much relates to the viewer having experienced a lot in life themselves. I wholeheartedly agree with you saying it's an enjoyable watch as an adult or kid because it makes you nostalgic of that freedom of creativity and adventure through Luffys character. I know you're not really disagreeing with this, I didn't write this as a rebuttal or some shit, I just thought what you said was interesting and wanted to say my piece as well.

One Piece is for a younger audience clearly conveyed in the free spirit, ever expanding, eccentric, colorful and mysterious aesthetics and subplots, so deaths were always considered an afterthought like the action. Too many deaths in One Piece would move the timeslot to a later broadcast time since it would potentially harm the young viewers growth within modern society which is why its such an enjoyable watch as a young adult or older, to feel like a kid again, like Luffy.

It’s the pacing guys- alabasta is only 10% into the one piece story. There’s probably no other show that would be able to handle such an adaption of shit pacing and censorship other than one piece because the story is what carries this series- it just gets better and better with insane world building that you notice as you go through it. And when plot points weave together and re-contextualise it all it’s so satisfying the and lore gets crazier, there’s so much intention in this story. Oda didn’t rush anything this is just the beginning

Certain fights slow the show down like a lot of the shows first fights Buggy, Kuro, Krieg, and Arlong almost everything but the fights in the arc were great then just takes too long to get threw the weird pace fights.

I looked into that claim further and it seems that the original quote from Oda states that he thought he would end the series in five years (which is around the time when the Alabasta arc was being published). Classic Oda and time perception when it comes to his statements about when the series will end, but I can't complain since I want more of it and we've currently reached the final saga in both the manga/anime.

But yeah, going from series like AOT/Vinland Saga/Death Note to Igaram tanking a f*cking nuke is a bit of whiplash lmfao. This problem isn't really fixed until a few arcs from now and this is where you start to see the reason behind all the fans who say it doesn't get good until (insert further episode here). These people are right in the fact that mortal stakes add a lot to the intensity of the story, but I still think (as we've all seen) that One Piece is pretty damn good from the jump. Essay=ended.

Alabasta still has some gas in it boys, don't count it out. It ranks in the 7-9 range of arcs for me personally (they constantly flip as the final saga continues) and you guys still have quite a bit to see. The ending of this arc is one of my favorites and an episode near the end of this arc is the first episode that had me shed a tear (Drum Island and Arlong Park only made me cry on rewatch) and it's also the first episode that made me see the true vision of the series. One Piece only gets more rewarding as you continue to watch, and trust me, the Alabasta ride still has more peak to come.

Personally, Alabasta doesn't make my top 10 arcs, so I obviously never thought it was peak. It had specific high points for me, namely the island of assassins, Ace, then Crocodile stabbing Luffy through (and 3-4 more points later on). While I did start to get invested in this arc, it really wasn't before the saga after the next one that I seriously soaked it in. For me, peak starts there.
