I've seen so many people in the past complain about the ball boy arc and say things like "I almost dropped the show because of it"... I genuinely really like this arc though. It's filled with a bunch of really lovely moments like Hinata helping Hyakuzawa. I'm the kind of person who loves the slower slice of life elements in haikyuu just as much as the hype games though XD

I was surprised to hear so many people cringe when Hinata snuck in. I understand why Tsuki did, though. The worst part for me was Tendo wanting a rematch only for him to have to run away to make drinks💀. I love how I thought the limit of this show's wacky character design was goofy hair(e.g. Dateko's setter) until we see white feathery hair and bird eyes😭. Also, Atsumu being an Ushijima+Oikawa is something I'll probably never be able to unsee, thanks.

Exactly. I had second-hand embarrassment when I watched it the first time, but after rewatching it, I wasn't embarrassed or cringed by it at all. I was actually inspired. Hinata's determination and will to constantly advance surpasses any embarrassment or awkwardness that comes with being a go-getter. Everything that he does. he does it at 101%. I always love episode 4 of ball boy arc. I never forget how Hyakuza said Hinata should be the one invited BUT hinata told him "You mean both of us should be here." Those interactions make Hyakuza more confident and never downgrade himself. Plus, the fact that Hinata acknowledged him by saying "I want to beat you" means a lot. I need a friend like Hinata <3 Take it easy is a nice reminder not only in volleyball but irl. Glad to hear this quote again. Make sure to breathe :>

I don't know if it's just me, but I never got the feeling that the coach was hoping to see Hinata fail. It always seemed to me like he was testing him. The ball boy arc always felt like a roundabout way to help him improve while also leaving him to figure it out himself.

Before I start my usual spiel of hidden details and answering questions: I'M SO HAPPY TO BE EARLY TO A HAIKYUU DROP FOR ONCE WHAT A WONDERFUL BIRTHDAY PRESENT FROM THE GEKS HEHE A little detail that no one really notices on their first watch is when Kindaichi says "Well, he's amazing, too." to Hinata. Because when he says "too" he's implying that Kageyama is amazing(that's why he's All-Japan) but he's also telling Hinata that he's just as amazing as Kags, which is a BIG DEAL for someone who played against his sucky self in junior high to say to him now! The thing about Hinata is that when he's in the zone, he's REALLY in the zone. And people can sense it, like Kunimi said (the Aoba Johsai player with his bangs split down the middle). And like Tsukki says, it ignites a sort of competitive spirit in others when they see Hinata like that. He's literally making everyone in the camp want to compete with him HAHA!

This ball boy arc really solidified my love for haikyuu as a series. The first training arc in season 2 was very much needed for them to come out as a new and improved team especially for their rematch against Seijoh. But this ball boy arc though, brought Hinata back to ground zero which really goes against shounen formula of just continuing on with the intensity and the “hype” of the show. Taking such a big breather and stepping back to the basics when you’re already this far into the series really shows Furudate’s talent in story-telling and character writing. He really takes times building his characters, putting his respect and love into them and his effort in doing so shines even more in this training arc in S4. He could have just implemented a “he learns as he goes/plays” but never did that and dedicated a whole arc for our baby sunshine 🥹 and here I am appreciating every moment of it ❤️

Episode 3 is the greatest episode of the series IMO. It depicts that time when you play something competitively and everything finally clicks to where you notice so many new things you never saw before and the game becomes a completely different beast.
