2024-10-07 03:12:03 +0000 UTC1 - He is suspended 2 - He is seen as crazy by the police 3 - He has reason to distrust the police 4 - No one knows time travel exists and your brain would never assume it to exist to answer a mystery, Ulrich only believes it after Helge's rant. Ulrich believes it is Mads already, and he doesn't trust the police. His prime suspect is the chief of police's father in law. He feels like he has been blocked from properly looking for his son with the warrant delay. He is currently seen as crazy by Charlotte and the rest of the cops, which has been increasing since episode 2 when he bursts into the meeting. Since then he got detained by the power plant security, got suspended, then harassed a senior citizen in care home. He only calls to leave her the phone message this episode because from his POV he has Helge dead to rights and is about to have concrete proof/arrest him in the act. Ulrich would need permission to have the DNA test done since he is suspended. It would make him seem even crazier to the cops he already feels may be involved/blocking him to protect family. Even without the TT, just saying he thinks it is his brother would be crazy, and no one else would have a vivid memory of his face from 3 decades ago. If he DID explain his TT theory, I think Charlotte would be recommending he see Peter for therapy.

The only match you would be able to find would be with relatives and that's not conclusive in that sense. Eg compared to a test with just Ulrich the results wouldn't say "Mads" or brother. It would match with the probability options parent/sibling/child, because that's how they work. They would take it as proof to be Mikkel at that point, even though we know it isn't. DNA-test says "can be a son, his son is missing, it's him". Case closed. You'd need to test eg Ulrich's parents as well to narrow it down and debunk that, and even then it would match as A brother to Ulrich which in itself is a far cry from THAT brother. Realistically colleagues would believe Jana had a another "secret" child at a surprisingly old age sooner than time travel. They would also more likely believe the result to be wrong, and if the first test through Ulrich pointed them in the direction of Mikkel, they'd likely be content with that and not even bother doing more. Because why would they even indulge it at that point. They'd close both cases with what would be a satisfying answer to them. The body was Mikkel, end of story. Wrong but logical conclusion. In either case a DNA-test would give absolutely zero proof of time travel. Scientifically he has absolutely nothing, and time travel isn't in play in any realistic theory to people that know it's impossible. A regular person would think the suspended Ulrich lost his marbles after Mikkel disappeared and is spouting complete nonsense grasping even for the impossible in desperation. That desperation is part of why he was suspended in the first place, it's not like he's on official business at this point. The only reason we know his nonsense isn't nonsense is that we've seen everything, and we're under the spell of extreme hindsight bias.

He, as a policeman and a grown man should understand the weight of this. If you imagine yourself in that scenario in real life, you cant keep that critical information a secret when it is part of a criminal investigation affecting several other missing people disappearing in a matter of days? Im sure he is actually breaking criminal investigation rules as well by doing that. Broadening the scope of the whole investigation with this new critical information would make all other policemen look at the case with a completely different perspective. Do you think one person can solve this case faster, or several people if they all share information. Not sure how else to explain stuff that just seems self explanatory to me.

I also don't see him being stupid or selfish, actually the complete opposite. He's doing everything in his power to find his son and finally pieced together the puzzle. I don't know how that qualifies as either stupid or selfish. This is also happening over the span of a few days. I'm sure he will consider resolving the issue with Mads, he just is focusing on what's more important first.

However, I think the truth of the matter has so many more both short and long term and far reaching implications on their current and potentially future situation that his mother's feelings have to be made secondary. He literally has proof that time travel is happening and he isnt telling anyone, while they are in the middle of an "epidemic" of people going missing, with two of those being his own family members. As a police officer, he is being unprofessional to say the least, and irresponsible towards everyone else in the whole town who he is putting at huge risk by keeping all this information to himself. This is the biggest information he has ever discovered in his whole life. I just found his reaction unrealistic but thats just me trying to see the bigger picture, rather than just trying to look at it from his selfish perspective. I cant really believe he would be as stupid or selfish as that.

Also it seemed like he was pretty close to telling his mother the truth, until she started saying how for the past 33 years she imagined Mads was alive and to never give up hope. I think Ulrich’s main concern at the moment is to find Mikkel and stop whoever the killer is. Revealing Mad’s identity doesn’t really solve either of those issues..

If he is sure, why would he not want to tell other people and give proof to them that it IS in fact his brother so that when he tells them they wont call him insane? I mean, if you were in that situation wouldn't you want to tell everyone that an insanely impossible situation is actually happening when you CAN actually prove it with a body right in front of you and with science available to make that proof? Also, not to mention his PARENTS for crying out loud, who have been waiting half their lives for their son to appear?!? They dont even have a body buried in that grave. Instead, he is investigating this crazy impossible occurrence on his own, while it would make logical sense to get as many people as you can to help you out, especially since so many people in this town have gone missing. At that point, its not just about you and your family thats at stake but the rest of the town too. So he is withholding this key information. His decision doesnt make logical sense and since he is a detective, its even more weird he is acting this way. Charlotte is basically doing a one woman show thing too withholding key information, when it would help her to cooperate and get help with the strange circumstances of the case.

2024-10-05 16:30:22 +0000 UTCI dont have many gripes with this show, but Ulrich suspecting the dead boy is his long lost brother, and then not doing a simple DNA test which is available to the police, that would easily prove it is just not realistic in that situation. Not to mention simply seeing the boys face with your own eyes (despite the burned eyes) would let you KNOW if that is the brother you lost all those years ago, since you've been seeing his face in your memories vividly due to PDST, and also you have pictures of him in your house as we have been shown. The show finely crafts every minute detail and expects the viewer to notice, follow and actually remember it all for literally three seasons, but then also expects us to suspend our disbelief and forget DNA testing exists. A minor gripe since the rest of the show doesnt have many examples like these thankfully. For me the first two seasons are amazing, with the third being noticeably worse, but thats very subjective.

Unless there's special conditions put on you individually as a person where you get locked up. I don't know the English word for the legal compulsion here. Meaning that for most patients, even if they're seen as unable to care for themselves, they can't lock them in. It puts the workers in impossible situations sometimes, where they don't want the patients to leave because they can hurt themselves, but they also can't legally lock them up or force them to stay. If Germany has similar rules it's not really the nursing home's fault. Their arms are figuratively tied behind their backs. Justice for the fictional nursing home!
