Volume 1 Rewrite (Pt. 1, 1.00 - 1.09)
Added 2022-06-14 23:25:51 +0000 UTCIt's me. I have worked hard and done the first of many Volume 1 rewrites. Right now, I have done up to 1.09 and that equates to 40,000 words.
Much is the same...and apparently much is different because out of said 40,000, I apparently wrote 10,000? One of my stream-readers claimed that and I don't know if that's true, but here's a link to the page.
Right now I'm just going to keep it on the site like this, in one big page. It'll be public since this isn't exactly a new chapter, and I hope you'll leave any typos or comments on it.
This is only Draft 1...of the Volume 1 rewrite...so this is a work in progress and I'll take off time next month as well. Hopefully it makes a really good opening to The Wandering Inn.
There shouldn't be much surprising, but I did add a new part with Rags and Teriarch from their perspectives. I don't know if I'll keep it, but search for 1.00 T and 1.00 G if you want to find their parts. There's also rewording of dialogue and more description on some scenes like Erin's food poisoning, but I think this was mostly upgrading rather than total rewrites.

There's the link. Also, look at this cool art by jamcubi! That's all from me. Also, check the author's notes--I'm writing The Last Tide (Pt. 2) on Saturday so no stream, but I will post an updated version of Interlude - Singing Ships! Now 15k long. See you then and thanks for supporting the story!

2022-06-18 17:07:04 +0000 UTCI just caught up! I really like your updated prose and description of the floodplains. The rags interludes are sooo good. The Teri one was cool to read knowing what i know now but would have made me put the chapter down if i were a brand new reader so I think i am in the camp of no early dragon. This would diminish gregs observation of Klbkch avoiding the dragon matter later on. If The slayer is sweating at Relc absentmindedly asking about potential teri. Kinda seems lame.respectfully. This final thought is just me being super nitpicky but it felt weird that to have Erin just say Goblins and Dragons every five seconds. I dont know what she would do in the situation (you are the author so whaterver you say goes), but it felt clunky to read. But thats all i got. Baby rags is super cute!

2022-06-17 22:19:23 +0000 UTCThe context I learned it in was from teachers in school referring to joking commentators, with a minor implication of idiocy. Words only have power if you give them power through interpretation. I'm not sure what goal is achieved by reinforcing that view? Repeat "that's racist" long enough, get other people to go along with you, and it becomes racist. But that's the toxicity of cultural overcorrection.

2022-06-16 23:27:53 +0000 UTCThe term was sometimes racially coded since in the segregated south black people were, of course, forced into poverty and the "cheap seats". But rest assured, in the Jim Crowe south if they meant to say "N-word" gallery that's exactly what they would say at the time. Its certainly a classist term but not very much racist or at least not much more racist than all sorts of terms that are a normal part of our modern lexicon.

2022-06-16 18:00:25 +0000 UTCI never said so? Perhaps you’re referring to Teriarch thinking (in this chapter) that the Quarass was coming to kill him? I believe he thought so because she’s one of the few living beings that knows him well and probably knows he’s alive. Besides that, her earliest incarnations were Dragonslayers and she of course is Quarass of a Shield Kingdom. I’m certain that with enough preparation, the Quarass would be able to slay Teriarch. But it would be at great cost

2022-06-16 11:57:44 +0000 UTCI’m agreed on this, subtlety works wonders in this case imo. TWI’s got such a large scale that it gains a lot from playing it slow and drip feeding some of the bigger characters’ perspectives into the story.

2022-06-16 10:10:28 +0000 UTCI feel the need to join in with the people saying that the Teriarch perspective doesn't quite fit. I think the encounter between Ryoka and Teriarch, and the organic way that the story implies that Teriarch is the dragon that Erin saw when she arrived in the world, was a much better introduction to the character. He's too much later-volume Teriarch in this scene, when we already know him as proud but affable, commanding but paranoid; it'll take all of the tension out of the Ryoka-Teriarch meeting. Overall though I liked the rewrites a lot - I've kind of wanted to go back to the beginning anyway and this is a fun way to do it.

2022-06-16 01:59:03 +0000 UTCDiscrimination against the poor? Yes. Racist? No.

2022-06-15 21:34:28 +0000 UTCJust as a heads-up, since you're doing a rewrite, it may be important to note that the phrase "peanut gallery" is actually racist.
2022-06-15 19:29:21 +0000 UTCTrue but I thought the additions were really engaging!

2022-06-15 18:58:04 +0000 UTCTho why would the Quarass be stronger than the dragon ? He is much holder than them and one of the most powerful dragons.

2022-06-15 13:24:01 +0000 UTCI'll have to agree with sarvashaktimaan here, Teriarch was a mystery in the beginning and that's how he was written. It's one of the reasons I always looked forward to chapters where he was mentioned and why his meeting with Rags was so revealing. I think it was one of the first chapters where we finally had more than a glimpse of him.

2022-06-15 13:23:40 +0000 UTCI have to say I love the rewritten version, especially since you expanded on certain characters and interactions. The slow-burn opening really works for The Wandering Inn and this rewrite enhances that. I cannot wait to see how the new Volume 1 will look!! I am also interested in how you added Rags and Teriarch to the story, it gives a kind of depth to them that you think "Huh, I didn't know that" in a delighted way.
2022-06-15 12:36:58 +0000 UTCWell darn, I guess I should have started my reread a week later haha

2022-06-14 23:50:32 +0000 UTCI personally feel like the early volumes should not have any Teriarch POVs because a big part of his early character is that he is a dragon we cannot fully comprehend.
