Agreed. A one-strike rule is a sure sign you wouldn't enjoy working there anyway. Stuff happens. Respectable employers understand that, and they at least give you a chance. My brother used to work for a company that had a two-day rule. If you missed two days of scheduled work - for ANY reason - you were gone. It didn't matter if you were in the hospital having emergency surgery. Two days - ANY two days - and you're done. It could even be two separate days, three years apart. Two days. Period. They had an obscene rate of employee turnover, and yet they couldn't seem to figure out why.

Any organisation that would judge you because you're not instantly available to answer their phone calls isn't one you'd want to work for anyway. I'd expand that to include the instance where a friend of mine was 5 mins late for an interview (due to being stuck for an hour on a broken train) and they wouldn't even let them in the door.
