If you go in for Zen meditation, to calm down your freaking out inside and "be in the moment", as you work on sitting still and counting breaths or focusing on 'Mu' or whatever your koan is, part of the process that unfolds over time is that you slowly become much more aware of your thought processes. And so, for most students who practice long enough there is a point where you suddenly realize "Oh my GOD, I have some really horrible thoughts going on all the time, am I a horrible person?" and then you freak out inside over that, while still continuing to sit completely still. Then, eventually, you get over it.
