A Pressing Dilemma

Comments

I never expected to be Cathy'd here

Grumpy Bird

I guess I've lived a very sheltered life,.. I've never even heard of Cathy Guisewite, or seen any of her comics, so, it's no wonder I don't recognise, or know who she is...

Ronald Burdick

ok, I'm old, and I still don't know what a "cathy" reference is?? soooo, what is it??

Ronald Burdick

Cathy reference??? Awesome!

Sarah Roberts

Cathy Guisewite retired in 2010. She brought her strip to a close at the same time. In its 34 year run it was a groundbreaking move forward in the depiction of independent women in an independent lifestyle, to the point where Guisewite was invited onto the Tonight Show among other places to discuss it, and her highly modern perspective. Note at no point am I saying your implied impressions of the Cathy strip were wrong. Your memories are completely accurate. Just consider what that meant for female depictions in newspaper comics in particular before 1976.

Eric Burns-White

We had it in the newspaper comics in the early 2000s

Cole Blackblood

Jeph, are you even old enough for Cathy references? I don't think I 've seen it since the early 90s.

Boris Pelakh

Typo in panel 3: "imprecison".

Matthew Reiter

Yay is coming along nicely,.... Elliot needs to chill, I wonder if Yay has a broad variety of frames,.... I've seen three distinct types all on the slim side - Is their a heavy lifter, a small precise, or even a battlebot? This Universe has so much potential. ........ Poor Marten.

Darnel D Cooper

..."light social poke" and rolls 20.

Evgeniy Semyonov

Wore this style all through college. It really is perfect!

Paul Zagieboylo

I'm a fat northern plains Native, I'd sweat too much in that outfit but it's good advice.

I'd love to see Elliot with the actually ACK face!

Veronica VanCleave-Seeley

I think that Mrs A has a bit more chill than that.

Mark

amen

Jeffrey Anderson

Except Desire is very adept, indeed a master of understanding human emotions, Yay seems to be working things out. But in looks, I'm totally with you.

Jeffrey Anderson

Go with the classic unbuttoned button-up over a t-shirt and jeans, Elliot! Roll up the sleeves for an even more casual feel, and if you wear a belt you can button up and tuck it in to lean more "business casual" if you overestimated how casual the occasion is. It's the ultimate social camouflage outfit.

Elliot might do better after a short RST.

Clifton Royston

As soon as I saw “ack”, I looked at the bottom to see if you were actually making a Cathy reference.

Brian

Do...do other people not stick themselves with hangers?

Dylan T

More likely he'd learn about her callers and look in awe at her, saying "TEACH ME YOUR WAYS."

Danya Michael

AAACCK! Thbbbfftt!!!!

Churchill (formerly TeaBear)

Yay is conforming to a stereotype and doesn't like it.

Bagge

The dinner date's still on but the actual meal is probably take out.

Andrew Mitchell

"Ack" makes me think of Bill the Cat from Bloom County.

Patrice M Christian

Forgive me my suspicions. Eliot meets Clinton's mom and turns out to be one of her more frequent gentlemen callers... (I'll go hide now.)

Joseph Bonnar

I feel both sides of that conversation...

Chuck Dee

GODDAMMIT, GET TO THE DICK STUFF!

Yelling Bird

Flashback to Dora and Tai’s first date! ❤️

Runhildr Zaetl

same

Has anyone mentioned that Yay is clearly a disguise for Desire of the Endless? (Note: if Jeph is reading this: I am not calling you unoriginal. I'm making a joke.)

Carl Fink

My mother and my aunt Ruthie were, at the height of the comic's popularity, basically each Cathy.

Thomas Halpin

Hehehe... Cathy reference. You're doing great, Yay!

Cole Blackblood

I had forgotten that Cathy was even a thing

Jeremy Tighe

CHOCOLATE CHOCOLATE CHOCOLATE! ACK!

Giant Speck

Since dinner didn't happen maybe they should just go to the fancy bar and rent outfits.

Verteiron

SYN!

Simon Green

i hope he doesnt overdress and make it weird at the moms house. he should ask yay for opinions on his outfits.

Ashley Thomas

Not that any of his clothes are on hangers. They're just mixed in with the pile on the floor. :)

Summer Sudbrink

ack fft

Alacrity Fitzhugh

Do you have a puppy named puddles?

doorbender

... what's the second leading cause?

LH

That would of course be an absurd outfit. One wears white tie and tails when dressing for dinner.

Mad Marie

Ack!! Reference... I guess it had to happen eventually, even in QC.

I think Yay would be fun on a road trip.

Melissa Smits

Jeph if Elliot doesn't show up in a morning coat and top hat... I wanna say I'm cancelling my pledge but somehow it being the dress code at the Revelation makes it less funny

Cody Renton

I knew that Spookybot could be spooky, but I didn't know they had "triggering your social anxiety" as part of their repertoire of frightenings.

Rob McBobson

And here I was hoping it was a Bill The Cat reference but Cathy makes more sense here.

Dallas Hicks

Nack!

BobC

And they know a skilled personal shopper in town.

Alex Kosnett

YOU LAUGH BUT HANGERS ARE THE LEADING CAUSE OF WARDROBE RELATED TRAUMATIC EYE INJURIES

Simon Green

Ack!

drone r0m-3

There is, and most of them are in high school

Jennifer Doyle

Elliot talking to Yay in TCP

Ting

Well, Elliot. You can ask Yay for outfit help. They do have on point styles, after all.

Joel Bateman

I just had a vision of a future comic where Elliot shows up dressed super nice and Clinton's Mom immediately starts hitting on him over dinner.

Michael Lazare

I can't tell if I wanna BE Yay, or date them

GodsInTheCogs

come out of the closet, El

jimbo

It's been quite a day for AI putting their feet in their mouths...

Mark Thomas

Someday, Yay will reach a deep and abiding understanding of human behavior. Then the Robot Apocalypse.

Michael Boettger

I understood that reference.

thelibrariancat

I sometimes wonder if there's a group of people who have never seen the comics in newspapers

Melissa Smits

Yay tries....

JD

ack
