It's Share Your Studio Day, Apparently

So here's where I do all my work! I spend anywhere from 8-12 hours a day here usually, so I've spent a lot of time (and money, thank u patreon supporters 😭) making it as comfortable and ergonomic as possible. It's doubly challenging because it has to accommodate all my music production crap on top of my comic-making crap! Here's the numbered breakdown for the 2nd pic:

1. Wacom Intuos Pro 23. My newest art tool and hands-down the best art display I've ever used. Love this thing, hopefully will do at least a couple thousand comics on it.

2. Apple Mac Pro, trashcan version. To be completely honest I hate these stupid computers. I bought one and it was a piece of junk that apple ended up having to replace entirely. This one hasn't died on me yet but the only thing they've got going for them is the small size and lots of ports on the back (no USB-C though). I wish Apple would actually make useful professional desktops that didn't cost $5000 anymore :(

3. Apple Thunderbolt display. It's a display. Nothing particularly fancy about it.

4. Coffee. The most important part of my work process.

5. One of my guitars. I have too many guitars. This one's a Music Man 7-string I've been using a lot lately. Hopefully will be recording and mixing the next metal album this fall.

6. My latest work purchase, a fancypants Herman Miller chair. A good chair is the single most valuable investment you can make if you work at a desk.

7. My desk. It's an ikea sit-stand desk, although since doing yoga has pretty much fixed my back problems, I haven't needed to use it in standing mode in a long time. It's a very good desk for the money, although you do have to be careful about not putting too much heavy shit on them.

8. WASD Code keyboard. It's got Cherry MX Clear switches for you keyboard nerds in the audience. It lights up, which is very useful when I'm working late and it's dark out.

9. Notepad for doodling/making to-do lists. That's a Sailor fountain pen on it. My wife is a pen nerd so we both buy fancy pens sometimes :3

10. 1st set of monitors. These are a pair of 8" Focal powered speakers. Great for casual listening and very good for mixing audio, but not quite as good as...

11: My Yamaha HS-8 monitors. They don't have as much low-end oomph as the Focals, but they have a flatter midrange and more detail in the high end, which makes them better for mixing audio. They're sitting on some foam speaker isolation pads, and the Focals are in turn sitting on some big metal monitor stands behind my desk.

12. ORB

13. My PC. It's mostly for video games but would also work just fine as a work machine if/when the Mac Pro dies. I don't like Windows, but it's not terrible.

14. Big 4k Dell display. It's currently hooked up to the PC- I used it on my mac for a while but the resolution was TOO high, ironically.

15. Various and sundry audio production gear. I've got my audio interface, my AxeFX, and a power conditioner in a big rack unit. There's also a drawer full of miscellaneous guitar shit.

16/17: Fancy headphones! A pair of Audio-Technica M70s and Hifiman HE560s. The ATs are mostly for audio mixing, the Hifimans (Hifimen?) are for listening.

18. Hard to see in the back, but I've got a lil Arturia MIDI keyboard for sequencing and synth stuff.

19. The obligatory Blue Yeti microphone for microphone things. I got a black one solely to match the rest of the crap on my desk.

20. Garbage. Where I truly belong.

Before I even read the list, I was trying to figure out if the keyboard was mechanical. I use mechanicals with Cherry MX Blue clones, but want to upgrade to Kailh Box Navy very soon. I'm addicted to the heavy, tactile clicks when I type or game.

Have you considered building a Hakintosh? All of the benefits of OSX at a fraction of the price. The only caveat is that the initial setup is a little more tedious because you've got to convince the OS to install on non-official hardware. Luckily, others have created utilities to easily do exactly that. https://hackintosh.com/

Isn't the coffee mug the one from the Tingler Kickstarter?! <3

Oh hey! I have the same ikea gooseneck lamp on my desk. And a blue snowball. Keep wanting to get a yeti, but there are so many nice 1/43 die cast cars I want and so little money....

Kurt Roithinger

Pffft. No 3D printer. He's clearly stuck in a 2D world...

BobC

Nice. Thanks for sharing! It’s always fun seeing other people’s work spaces.

Michelle Gawe

Where do you keep the mechanism that allows you to travel through time?

Obliviontoad

How do you draw with the guitar? Looks difficult. (My smartassery is lacking today, apologies. I'll try to have something more witty next time)

Jess W

please tell me that is the Shame Orb

Blake Manor

Watching Jeph take photographs while looking floofy cute, I suppose.

Joseph Bonnar

And I thought Bubbles and Faye were sexy.... Damn, Jeph, I could use a setup like that one.

Joseph Bonnar

But remember: this is the once a year "Share Your Studio" clean the studio day.

kaitou

"I have too many guitars" is something I've NEVER heard a guitarist utter before.

awgiedawgie

You also have a CODE keyboard with clear switches! Very nice. One question: wouldn’t it be a better keyboard if it had an USB hub and a volume knob?

Doeke Zanstra

wait, there's such a thing as "too many guitars"?

Matt

Which Sailor is that? Does it use a cartridge/converter or piston fill?

Bruce Alan Horn

You do not belong in the garbage. You are worthy of love and respect. And you write/draw a wonderful comic, besides.

Lenore J Jones

Great to hear your back's getting better! Do you have any advice for a yoga starter?

Lars Gottlieb

Agreed! Your artwork is really changing - so photo-realistic!

Haldon Lindstrom

Good looking setup. I am jealous of several things you have going on there.

Ronald Stimbert

“I don't like Windows, but it's not terrible.” That so much damning with faint praise, Clippy is like “I’ll take the compliment.”

Miyaa

I dream of a day when I am that organized!

Um...Where is Ollie?

Lucy

#20 - no! Stay at chair like excellent creator you are!

Devin Gates

But is it the Shame Orb?

GregD

This is the weirdest QC comic you’ve ever put out. 🤣😂. You’re work is much appreciated, but take care of yourself above all else.
